  1. I don't think its obvious at all where these records came from, old store stock or not. One things for sure I don't think Ian has been traipsing round old thrift stores by the dozen picking up whatever was in the boxes. It's obvious he must have 10s of 1000s which would indicate an old distributor's warehouse or the like, and if that's the case most of the records would be mint/unplayed.
  2. You are missing the point old boy. I'm saying that in the early seventies DJ's HAD to play records on merit NOT because they were 1 of only 3 known copies !!!!!. Court Davis is an example, very rare record back then, got played and dropped almost immediately as nobody really like it, its a crap record IMHO.
  3. Begs the question who would have ALL 14 originals in order to supply in depth matrix details etc. ?. The vinyl pressed copies of styrene only originals is certainly a pretty weird anomaly, if the intent was primarily to deceive, why not just replicate originals that were on vinyl.
  4. The nail right on the head mate.
  5. PM'd you.
  6. I always had my doubts about that Trickbag thing, especially after I visited a certain dealers shop in Las Vegas and saw a box of brand spanking new copies, that I don't think I was supposed to see, being spirited behind the counter.
  7. I didn't say it was and I'm not defending the sending of substandard items. My point is that if these records have just been stuck in a warehouse and never touched, its a fair assumption that they will be in decent nick. How would they get damaged/scratched if they have never been out of their sleeves. The last time I looked records were not perishable. Exactly so they have been played/used etc. so you are right to check every one.
  8. But do your records come from bulk purchases of what are effectively unsold, unplayed records that have never seen the light of day?. I used to buy in bulk from old man Bostock when he got fed up of the market stall, virtually every record that came out of that warehouse was mint. I think its a fair assumption that such records ought to be in decent condition, without having to check every last one of them.
  9. Ian actually says "in case" any were cracked so he didn't know one way or the other. I doubt that many soul packs, especially those containing 1000, are rigorously condition checked, regardless of the dealer selling them. Most of these records will have sat in warehouses for years and never have been out of their sleeves let alone played.
  10. Since the young 'uns won't have spent years searching for a particular record and then had the joy of finding it in some god forsaken backwoods record shop, they won't have any emotional attachment to it either. The only factor will be the quality of the sounds and their dance floor reaction, (hmmm a bit like the early seventies).
  11. God help him if he refers to the subject matter as a "bunch" of records.
  12. Maybe they never paid him, in which case they would not have the rights anyway.
  13. Its already been said that Soul Brother licensed it from Dave Johnson and it states quite clearly on the Demon release that it was licensed from him too. Perhaps Fantasy only had the rights to previously released material and only in the format it was released on. Given the ins and outs of this thread perhaps FANTASY would have been the best label for it to come out on.
  14. Its quite simple really Stax/Volt/Fantasy only had the rights in the U.S. maybe nobody had the rights in the UK/worldwide which is why Dave Johnson could grant the rights to Demon as he had only sold the U.S. rights. It is not the ONLY "lost album" 2 of the others in the Truth album discography have never been seen either.
  15. Did you seriously expect someone to send you £30k (your figure) worth of records as compensation for 300 £1 records ?.
  16. As I said in my original post, I don't think the young 'uns will give a flying f*ck about value just quality of the sounds.
  17. So someone offers your 14 of the rarest records on the planet, as compensation for 300 soul pack records, he also tells you to keep your mouth shut, and you don't think for a minute that something a touch untoward is going on ? Is your birthday 26/01/2016. (Yesterday).
  18. I'm not excusing the cheating of anyone, if you were unhappy with the soul pack you should have insisted on a full or partial money refund. If however you entered into some sort of "secret/shady deal" in recompense, then you should have kept your word as requested. Even when the shady deal fell you should have kept this between yourself and Ian as this was the agreement. I'm quite sure the threat of bad publicity regarding the soul pack would have been sufficient to ensure you were compensated. I have no idea where these records came from, but I do know that they have been known about for quite some time.
  19. I think anybody would be pissed off with anybody who broke their word.
  20. I think people are looking at this topic from the standpoint of the established scene which most of us have be on for donkeys years. The essence of the established scene is and always was about attending venues to hear new sounds or at least hear sounds that could not be heard every day of the week. These sounds were always the domain of a selected few DJ's/collectors no matter which period of the scene is scrutinized, and they have almost totally dried up. Perhaps a parallel "young 'uns" scene would be similar, but would not need ultra rare records to achieve this. Lets face it newcomers to the music would be quite happy to dance to sounds they don't know etc. even if they were the Mirwoods/Ric-tics Etc., that we all cut our teeth on. Since just about everything is available via the internet the "rare vinyl" aspect of the scene means nothing to the young 'uns since they can get it no matter how rare on vinyl. Perhaps the young 'uns scene won't suffer from the "its played cos it rare" shite that has bedeviled the scene for years. Lets face it there are 1000's of sounds to go at so DJ sets would still be varied and not repetitive.
  21. Bloody hell Martin if you want your John's extensive collection of Spark demos just say so.
  22. Don't tell me Ian is also doing 1000 Glam Rock records for £1000 too ' Ian I know you will see this, please NOTE the smiley !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and don't get your boxers in a knot, assuming its not a commando day
  23. Its also likely that the 4204 darktown strutters was unreleased, as far as I can remember it was from a "blaxploitation" movie.
  24. A quick google came up with dozens of hits for Colin Dilnot, inc blogs with an e-mail address, since I didn't really know the guy well I don't feel I should contact him. Perhaps some of you that did could do it and clear this mystery up once and for all.
