  1. Well really! Who would not be proud to be born in the North?? In the spirit of unity we'll even accept peolpe from Yorkshire (but just this once mind). Tony
  2. Being that I've not been a member for too long, I wondered how many of you members of a Northen soul site were actually from the North, now that "Our Thing" has become global. I'm a Salford Lad wot escaped to Heywood. So come it's only a bit of fun. Cheers Tony
  3. Greetings from Flooded Heywood How many other versions of The O'Jays Lonely Drifter do es anyone know of? 2 I know Gene Diamond & Louis Dyer any more? And while we're at it, how many tunes called "Breakaway" are there???? Cheers TonyP
  4. Gene --I DO Live it Up! Last Friday every month (BLATENT PLUG) Cheers Tony
  5. Thanks Gene. Now the big question do I flog it? Nah Tony
  6. Anyone out there let me know the going rate for Cliff Nobles My Love Is Getting Stronger on JV. Bought it 30 some years back from Global in Manchester and then nobody wanted to know it( just like they didn't rate Tony Hester on Karate or Jean Wells--With My love bought same place at about the same time) Thanks TonyP
  7. Bang on!! Thanks. Now I can get some sleep. Tony
  8. What the bloody 'ell is the tune the Shapeshifters have nicked(sampled)?? I know it but can't bleedin name it. Ta Tony
  9. Yes Kumano--both me and Smila give it an airing at Live It Up! along with other 70s & 80s stuff. Much better sound than the likes of that well known misprint 'Farty Lime Can' Tony
  10. Sorry I'm late in replying but I can't log in from home for some reason. Anyway Walsden in Lancashire? Well it's part of Todmorden which is on the Lancashire Yorkshire border and subject to arguments over the years which county it is in. Lancashire say it should be in Yorkshire, Yorkshire aren't so sure.....oh dear. Really though in between Rochdale and Huddersfield up here in the Frozen North. Cheers Tony
  11. Now this is not a dig at those of us with perfect complections. Do you just love a constant diet of well known overplayed oldies and Wigans Greatest Hits? If your answer is yes- then fair play- to each his(her) own. If however you are a little fed up with the same old same old and believe you have got better sounds that deserve an airing and fancy doing a short spot (say 1/2 hour - 10 tunes or so) either make yourself known to us at Live It Up! in Walsden- last Friday every month or email me tony.porr@poff1.fsnet.co.uk Being that we're skint you wont be getting any dosh, but then neither are we (yet) Egalatarianism is for every body. Cheers Tonyp
  12. Speaking of Contempo Soul Packs a friend of mine got The Del Larks Job Opening in one just as Mr Levine was claiming the only known copy. Tonyp
  13. 50 of your english pounds eh? Really smarmy now--got it for three quid on Friday :0)))) Tonyp
  14. First records heard at a real soul club would have been Exus Trek-Sweet Sherry-Thumb A Ride-Only your love can save me, all on my first time at the Pendulum. I can't remember what I heard at my first All Nighter as I had a lot of stuuf going through my head at the time :-o Tony
  15. This may not be the question you thought it was, however what I am asking is are Rip Snorting All Guns Blazing movers like say Sandi Sheldon,Theresa Lindsey and their ilk still preferable to the slower things,Bobby Kline,Timi Yuro etc. I know which I can still move to, but there are a few down tempo things that I'd like to play out just wondering what the reaction may be. Cheers Tony
  16. know this thread has diverted somewhat, but my best memory of Yate, cant remember date due to old age and chemical imbalance, was after driving down from Manchester with Kev Smith, Mark Andrew and Rick Warburton pulling onto car park and noticing 2 well groomed young men sat in their car Kevin offered them a can by launching it out of our car window whereupon it promptly severely dented their car door. Neither even blinked! I wonder to this day what their interest was in an allnighter ???? Tonyp
  17. Yeah just imagine my delight at the news, as it was gonna get played at Fridays Live It Up. Anyway I sure aint gonna be short of an ashtray am I ? Tony
  18. Oh Well thats f*cked it Thanks Tony
  19. Hi All Picked up a tune by Brenton Colbert-Take the the Clouds Away- a couple weeks back, on Atlantic City. Anybody have any info on it or him as its not a bad 7ts type dancer, I like it anyway. Cheers Tonyp

  22. Hard one to call this ,but a couple of points to ponder. Of the recent returnees, how many are Soul Music lovers, that is were into soul, usually the more commercial stuff, Stax Atlantic Motown etc before they ever entered a Real Soul Club and how many are Wigan Casino Fans? Cast your mind back to the old days and the first club you went to. For me it started in 1972 at the Pendulum in Manchester. I thought I knew what soul was, but stuff me this music blew me socks off.Back then ,as has been said before, newies were all we wanted, whenever a record had been overplayed, re released pressed or whatever it was dropped for something new. BUT and it is a big but, back in the day all these clubs The Torch, The Mecca, Pendulum, Blue Room and later Wigan were all weekly events inside of a month a new sound could have been heard 5 or 6 times making it that much easier to become 'known'. Nowadays most nights are monthly, we're getting older,we've got other commitments and dont get out as often ,so you might hear something new twice in 3 months so sounds are that much harder to break. So when someone plays something you don't know give it a chance, who knows 25 years down the line it might be your favourite oldie, and any way its odds on you'll like the next one or the one after. As the MIGHTY George Clinton said 'Free your mind and your ass will follow ' Tony
  23. Oh well my shopping list just gets longer and longer. On a quick count up about 50 good sounds here, that's about a third of a nights playlist. If we keep it going we should come up with a bloody good night of music all for the price of half a Shrine release. Some Motown to carry on David Ruffin--I can't stop the rain Martha Reeves--Heartless Temptations--I'm coming home Originals--Good lovin just a dime away Dynamic Superiors--One nighter Edwin Starr-- Love the lonely peoples prayer Most of these are 7ts things but the Martha Reeeves is a right old storming motown mutha. Tony
  24. I know that this question has been asked before but, seeing as most of us are only poor working sods, what good cheapies have you come across lately? Just to start a few from me all under £20 most under a tenner. Not in any particular order Otis Redding -Look at the girl Tommy Tate -If you aint man enough Gene Diamond- Lonely Drifter Rose Hargrove_ Knocked down kicked around Maskman/The Agents - Yaw'll Archie Bell- Where will you go when the party's over Any more out there? I need to build a cheap collection Tony
  25. Read all with interest. Greg-you talk about being bored playing the same sounds, this is something I feel strongly about and will expound further at a later date, however in the meantime I ask,was the playlist static because you didnt want to play fresh sounds or were the crowd not willing to experience them? Back to my original somewhat tongue in cheek topic. I was talking about the alleged widespread practice of independent djs being warned off by some promotors that if they played at say Event A their services would never again be required at Events B, C or D. This is not personal, it has never happened to me, nor is it likely to, but I dont want to be led around by the nose and not be able to hear sounds because the people that have them have been advised not to play at the events I choose to attend. Anybody old enough might remember this. I will not be pushed stamped indexed briefed debriefed or numbered My life is my own I am a free man. sorry bit OTT but you know what I mean What was it The Younghearts asked for? Oh yeah A LITTLE TOGETHERNESS tony
