  1. As expected pretty even divide pro & con. I would agree that word of mouth is probably the best form of advertising,... but if they don't come through the door, they ain't gonna talk bout it. ta Tony
  2. Title says it all really.. but do they? As artistic, creative, amusing & clever as those I've seen on here undoubtedly are. Or is word of mouth better.. or a combination of both???? Ta Tony
  3. Two of my favourites Matha Reeves & the Vandellas- My Baby Loves Me and the immortal Tammi Terrell- I Can't Believe You Love Me-- either version with or without Marvin. Tony
  4. Just waded through the whole Black vs White thing and whilst not wishing to pull the scab off that again,I guess in essence you had to be there, it got me wondering from what direction did you approach this scene. Speaking for myself (only) as a wanabee skinhead in early 70 (but never being allowed the haircut) attending youth clubs and hearing the usual stuff,Otis Aretha Motown Stax Atlantic etc. and then progressing to the local discos finding about only 1 in 5 records I heard I liked and after being warned off The Twisted Wheel as a club for Mad Scooter Boys, eventually started buying Blues & Soul and seeing an advert for a Soul Club--The Pendulum-- not a Northen Soul Club mind,a SOUL Club. Anyway we wandered down one night and gues what, we knew not one record. We were however totally f*cked,I mean hooked, for life. But I still considered myself just a soul fan buying and listening to everything I could afford, which wasn't much, including just as much contemporaneous soul material as Rare Soul as it was then called. I never heared the term Northern until I played Carl Carlton --Competition aint Nothing to an old mate who was very much into Soul who said "yeah not bad but its a bit Northen innit?" Oh well Any Road Up Folks Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Whats Yours(No I aint getting 'em in) Tony
  5. An instrumental that lifted the roof off old Wigwam on its first play, and yes I'm afraid I went overboard with them .ooh those car horns and traffic noises. Yes folks Footsee. On a more soulful note Bob Relf's Blowing My Mind To Pieces-- went intersteller from the off. Beep Beep Tony
  6. 8. Really Obvious ones I know , but what about Happy-William Bell The Joker ??? Tony
  9. Said my memory was fading Mark. Also didn't mention Dave Withers & Rod Shard in Arndale Market or Market Stall on Shudehill that had about 50 copies of R.Dean Taylor "Let's Go Somewhere" on VIP till it got played at Wigan...then it was gone and the one in Stevenson Square. Like I said memory's going Tony
  10. Yeah if we knew then... For example Rare Records used to have lists on the wall of what you could order. Darrell Banks double sider on Stateside say, but again in our youth what didnt we know?? Oh Well <_< Tony
  11. Just out of interest, when you first started buying/collecting where'd you get em from. Deep in the last century (1972) when I first stumbled across Rare Soul,at the wonderful Pendulum,i don't remember too many lists apart from Brian 45 Philips,Soul Bowl(but I think that was a touch later) & the back page of Blues & Soul. In Manchester we were a bit spoiled we had. Ralphs (infamous) Spin Inn Hime & Addison Rare Records & Global, --that wasn't really a shop more a counter in a dusty old warehouse where you would be presented with a list of records at varying prices from £1 up. I bought some nice stuff from there "blind" but I would love to see some of the lists now to see what was missed. Ah memories(already fading) Over to you. Tony
  12. Ok all confession time. Which tunes do you absolutely love but Just-Can't-F*ckin-Dance -to?? Couple from me Mel Britt She'll Come Running Back Darrell Banks I'm the one who loves you. Off to oil me castors now Tony
  13. "I've just turned 26" So have I!!!!! Into 48! TONY
  14. Johnson, hawkins,Tatum & Durr -Your Love-is a wonderful track, played it out last time, got a good reaction. BTW, nobody answered me question yet about who they are. The Chandlers or what? Tony
  15. Just caught part of a documentary on BBC4 all about a Rock & Roll weekender, originally went out in 1990 or so. Anyway it showed a bunch of folks dancing, dressing up and generally enjoyng themselves to exactly the same set of tunes they had cherished for 30some years. Draw your own parallels. Keep the Faith (Patent Applied For) Tonyp
  16. Oh yes, this is my kind of topic. Not all of us are lottery winners or big end earners, so,unless we sell the missus ,are never gonna get near the real rare stuff .Anyway most are around on one cd or another so if you must have em better to get 20 or so on't cd then pay £10-15 for a pressing IMO. Yes it is very difficult to get a decent collection these days, which is why threads like this help us to Keep The Faith(PAT. Pending) by spreading the word on good tunes that still can be found on original label, that should also be played out on Quality grounds, rather than price tags. Keep up the good work. Cheers Tony
  17. Picked up a nice one a coupla weeks back, Your Love Keeps Drawing Me Closer by Johnson Hawkins Tatum & Durr. Mate of mine reckons its most of if not all of The Chandlers. Anyone confirm?? Cheers Tony
  18. I know there's an "AJP" label to use ones full and correct title(Antony James P...), but if there's one called" Mad Tony from Manchester" ,I'l buy the bugger Cheers Tony
  19. You could always play my favourite wedding tune. Kung Fu Fighting--goes down a storm in Salford. I'll get me shuriken.... Tonyp
  20. Ooh Bit Harsh. As Jimmy said in BBC2's Dancing In The Streets David never hit Tammi with no hammer,he just slapped her upside the head. So that's Ok then?????? Tony
  21. Would that be when they appeared with The Miracles and Billy Griffin had just replaced Smokey?? If so ,I was at that one, went to Wigan after with a head full of magic and a copy of the program. Had to put up with Martyn Ellis taking every chance to tell me that the cover was a Masterpiece. "That covers a Masterpiece Tony." "Yes Martyn, I know." "That covers a Masterpiece Tony" "Yes Martyn ,I know" "That covers a Masterpiece Tony" "Yes Martyn,P*SS OFF" Oh well that was Martyn Cheers Tony
  22. Ooops I mean who's?? I'm biased IMO The Temptations are/were the greatest vocal group EVER! So who's your favourite?? Right from the Golden Years. Obvious choices David Ruffin Eddie Kendricks Paul Williams, surely one of the most underated, underused talents, listening to Last One Out is Brokenhearted... just slays me. Dennis Edwards Otis Williams Ali Ollie Woodson Richard Street The list like the membership goes on and on. My favourite is good old dependable Melvin Franklin, just love that big booming Bass underpinning all the soaring vocalising and harmonizing.. fantastic. So lets hear folks for your top choice. Power..boom boom Power..boom boom boom Power..boom boom Love It Tony
  23. I know that ultimately any record is only worth how much you are prepared to pay,but how do dealers arrive at the values?? If the once" one copy only" Frank Wilson is worth 15 grand does that mean that a £15 sound has 1000 known copies or what?? Tonyp
  24. From 79 to 2002?????? Heyzoos Christos Man, How f*ckin old are you??????? Tony
  25. Or one of my spilling mustooks?? I of course meant Yocksheer FOLK Tony
