  6. Jimmy Mack is based on an actual person - The song, with lead vocal by Vandellas' lead singer Matha Reeves, is narrated by a woman who longs for her boyfriend, named "Jimmy Mack", to return to her. The narrator is being courted by another suitor, whom she notes "talks just as sweet as" her long-gone Jimmy, and hopes for him to return before her resistance is worn down. The inspiration for this song came from a 1964 music industry awards dinner, which Lamont Dozer attended. At the ceremony the mother of the songwriter Ronnie Mack accepted an award for her son, who had recently died, for his composition He's So Fine. Under pressure to come up with a hit for Reeves and the Vandellas, Dozier and the team penned this song in part a tribute to Mack the writer. "Jimmy Mack" was originally recorded in 1964 when Annette Beard was still apart of the group. The song was shelved because the Motown Quality Control team felt the recording was not suitable for release with the Vietnam War going on. Like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' later hit, "The Tears of a Clown", "Jimmy Mack" was pulled from the vault two years later and released as a single in early 1967. By that time, the Vietnam War had become a highly debated issue among the American public. Thus, Reeves' sentiment that her "Jimmy Mack" return took on a different meaning for many listeners, particularly those stationed overseas. - copied from Wikipedia
  7. i remember this, Berry Gordy susposedly the buyer. I thought it tunred out to be a hoax
  8. i think that is actually the problem Matt; i reckon to get a good idea of the scene(s) (i.e. nite and niter) you need someone(s) who isn't that vocal, probably isn't even on here; who just goes along dances allnite or talks records allnite or a mix of the two - who doesn't have any agenda knows nothing of bollitics and would just give an honest open appraisal.
  9. Yes I did Carms - when i first got this record i was Googling "Estelle Parker" for hours; closest i came was actresses, singers and dancers. Nothing conclusive though, it could've been his bext door neighbour :-)
  10. If you say so Kev...what ever you call it - i agree it is a great track :-)
  11. Kev do you mean the great track "I Won't Be Hurt" ?
  12. it was meant exactly like that, Nev; but I can see how it could be read the other way so i thought best apologise any way... P.S never met Nev; but he's great! :-)
  13. actually that was wrong of me to say that, i retract that statment and apologise...what i was trying to say was that he is not my 'mate' so me bigging him up is purely on his DJ ability and not just a mate blowing smoke up somewhere where smoke shouldn't be - does that make sense?
  14. nice one; save me getting mine out - i mean who plays records these days LOL
  15. it is the same take... my BoRo doesnt hiss Pete
  16. didn't someone in the States find a small boxfull a couple of years ago? Most of which were buggered (technical term) with only a couple of real sellable ones? or was it one of my dreams??
  17. it was owned by Nina Simone - the record label not your record, though techincally i spose she did own it once. not helping you right now but felt i wanted to share that useless bit of information.
  18. Yes he does Karen, you would be suprised, try it if it fit's he will play it. And that does hold him back LOL. Butch is better now than ever IMO. he certainly is the number 1 rare soul DJ. When/If He leaves the scene - we will really have to re-evaluate it all from the 100 Club upwards...there can't be any imataters. Could go on for longer, but won't - suffice to say this is not some sycophantic out burst; but what i think - i don't even think the guy likes me LOL
  19. nothing wrong - it is the promoters fault for booking the wrong DJ
  20. andy it's not the Butchers you want; it's Aldi.
  21. Very Fair grading on that - i can vouch for it people, you wont be disappointed.
