  1. Hi Steve, It's called ' A Better Place' on Black Rock a real belter . Loved your spot at Essence on Saturday afternoon by the way, didn't know any of them. Hi Tone glad Jans still about, top guy.
  2. Cheers Sean can't wait for Essence, Frankie Gearing, Chuck Armstrong,Womack, all ready and waiting. Anyone still in contact with Jan Barker, used to always read his column in Blackbeat, fantastic stuff! Last met him at Morecambe weekender in the 90s when Sam Dees came over, had a great time. Just been inspired to dig a few out to play again, Truth- Come back home, Willie Johnson- Its me, Sweet Berry- Don't let go. Tony 2 gigs in a year is as good as it gets for me, now that George Jackson is no longer on
  3. Deep soul is my personal favourite as well. The great thing about it is there are loads of great cheap deep soul records, Bobby Patterson -if you hadn't slipped up and got caught, Roger Hatcher- We're gonna make it etc. Of course there are the holy grail deep records, but I'm happy with my classic deep. In saying that I'm lucky enough to have a copy of Rainbow rd. Can't wait for Essence next year to play the legendary Downbeat lounge
  4. Groovettes- Think it over baby Tempests- Someday ( I think played on the coach from Derby going up to the Crown hotel in Fife, first time I heard it) Bobby Hutton- Come see Ghetto boys - Handwriting on the wall Buddy Ace- Pleasing you Loads more, had some great times there. The turnover of tunes there was mindboggling
  5. Really underrated singer, I love 'Groove me' and 'I'm gonna fall in love with you'. Worth seeking out his 'Well Done' Lp shouldn't be too hard to find.
  6. Just listening to the radio show as we speak, really enjoyed it. Had the good luck to be involved with the George Jackson nights, not many punters but musically fantastic IMO. I love Clarence Reid too, great stuff!!
  7. Tone, And what a fantastic album it is too
  8. Equally ruined for me is Bobby sheens version of 'I may not be what you want' B side of 'Something new to do'. My wife said the intro sounds like Joe Dolce- Shuddup ya face Now rendered totally unlistenable for me
  9. Definitely went to at least 2 Limelite do's. Bit hazy apart from drinks being very pricey.I would have been in the dunmore room because I would have been more into 70s around that time.
  10. Stupidly swapped the Johnny Gilliam for the one on Modern years ago Regret it now of course, as Gareth said great deep flip.
  11. Randy Cozens funeral was amazing. People spontaneously clapping to Soul Brothers Six - I'll be loving you also hearing one of his favourites Arthur Alexanders - I need you baby, as good as gets for me.
  12. Love this thread, how could we forget the great O.V. Wright, scandalously underrated, up there with the best. Particularly love ' Without you' soul as it should be, genuinely sounds hurt!
  13. Hi Sean Just gave the Otis Clay a spin, great stuff. flicking through my records just thought of a few more. Willie Walker - reaching for the real thing, Known Facts - How can I believe in you - Pawn ( Hi recording) And the excellent Al Williams - The Other side of my love- Crajon (Gene Bowlegs miller produced Hi Sounda like)
  14. It's a really tricky one the Japanese LPs. Not pressed up in great quantity originally and a lot of them are 20 years old. That said the Frankie Gearing, Harold Burrage-One derf ul, New Jersey groups etc have turned up recently on ebay, and not reached anything like the prices I thought they might. Not sure about P vine listing. Are you interested in any artists in particular? Best Mark
  15. The great thing is most of the Hi catalogue has been re issued by Demon records. I've had a fantastic 6 volume Japanese vinyl set that I've had for near on 20years. On the subject of the Japanese fans, I think they should be given much more credit. When you think of the fantastic rare Lps such as Tommy Tate - Malaco album, Frankie Gearing, Eddie Giles- Alarm/Murco stuff, Clay Hammond etc. Thanks guys
  16. All good stuff, seem to remember ' Mon Belle amour' getting plays many years back, also remember Ivor playing ' If this is heaven' by Ann Peebles. Love the Philip Mitchell' Little things' I used to play that one down the Village during my 'deadbeat spot' around 8pm before anyone got there
  17. Hi girth, Yeah I know I get a little carried away with the Hi stuff, but it drives me when I hear people talking about £1000 tunes and they don't even own Quiet elegance records or Dells/Dramatics ' Love is missing from our lives' etc. It would be interesting to make Djs play a set from a box of cheapies now and again, just to get some balance
  18. Just to add that if you like that sort of sound it's worth picking up a few cheapies from Quiet Elegance on Hi. 'Do you love me/ I'm afraid of losing you' is IMO one of the most underated soul records of it's type. There was also a cd by them which came out in about 1989 by Demon. Best Mark
  19. Both Sunday and Monday sold out apart from the restaurant
  20. Jimmy Lewis - Totally involved- great choice Adam, how could I forget that one. Blinding!!!
  21. I paid about £50 for Kent Drake a few months back, quite tough to find though.
  22. Hi Simon, I loaned Sequel records the Debbie Taylor - Comin down on you & JJ Barnes - Born Again albums for the artwork. Both great albums, really think ' Wishful Thinking' is a great tune
  23. Hi Anthony, Wouldn't fault you on Lee Jones & J Blackfoot. Would just add John Edwards, absolutely love his version of 'Walls that separate our love' truly magnificent
  24. Agree with all the comments on Debbie Taylor. The arista 7" is a must 'Just don't pay/ I don't wanna leave you, what a great double sider that is! Always had a soft spot for ' Second to none' from the album.
  25. One of favourites is NYCC - Make every day, great dancer also Mighty Clouds of Joy - Truth will set you free, which used to get played at Blackpool weekenders in the early 90s.
