Paul McKays playlist Mike and the Censations - There is nothing I can do about it - Highland (Mike "Bo" Kirkland and the guys produce a fabulous slow Xover track from May 67 as the flip to the Northern "Don't mess with me". These guys made some fantastic records. Worth seeking out.) In Refosoul Motivation IV - Where has my baby gone - Star Birth (Great 1981 sweet track out of Compton, Cal. A recent acquisition that seems to be hard to locate) In Refosoul 2001: Black Essence - When you walk alone with love - JWJ (Fabulous deep flip of "Change in my life" and for me the best side. Recorded in New York 1974) In Refosoul Johnny Green - Thinking 'bout my happy home - Peace (Obscurity out of Beaumont, Texas - again unlisted Jerry Warren - I really love you - Latosia (Rare 7" of this 1988 pictre covered beauty) Jo Armstead - There's not too many more (left like him) - Giant (Great deep with a beat Xover if you see what I mean - awesome!) In Refosoul Mel Britt - Love invented misery - Fip (Hairs on the back of the neck time with the flip of "She'll come running back) In Refosoul Deboniers - Why pick on me - Orr DJ (Obscure & unlisted vocal group outing of finger clicking greatness, with Sherm Nesbary involved along the way) Bobby Bennett - Alone with my tears - V-Tone (Fabulous deep with a beat) In Refosoul Frankie Zhivago Young - Someone stole my love - Ultra (Sweet sweet sweet tune from Jamaica another that's hard to source) Congenial Four - You played the part (of a loser) - Capitol (Well would you choose this as the name for your group even in 1970? Just the right side of sweet from this mixed group) In Refosoul Syl Johnson - I resign - Twinight 107 (This is a fine Xover piece from the instantly recognisable Syl.Recorded in Chicago Feb - Apr 1968, ostensibly as a remake of a 1961 Federal side. Syl forgot the chord progression so ended up with a completely new song! Hard to locate and probably his rarest on the label) In Refosoul Arthur Conley - Take a step in my direction - UK Atlantic (UK only 45, version of Aesop's Fables on Atco, recorded in 69 but not issued until the 7ts, short (1m 55s) but sweet) Bobby Patterson - Recipe for peace - Paula (Only available on a 45 as the flip of an 8ts reissue of "How do you spell love" and in some demand, I sold 2 copies on Gemm yesterday) In Refosoul Bobby Sansom - Don't leave (baby don't go) - Sublime (Sublime (Sorry!) Xover piece attracting some attention) In Refosoul Dewey Jeffries - When no one cared - Gary-Dew (Nice quirky midtempo out of Cleveland from 1972) In Refosoul Billy T Soul - The way to a woman's heart - Musicor (Nice Xover written & produced by Van McCoy, originally the flipside) Robert Taylor & HPJs - Let me love you - Sonic (Nice midtempo) In Refosoul Philtrations - That's what love is - Suncut (Very obscure low-fi Xover, only seen it listed for sale once since I've had it) Charlie Clemons & Mighty Power Band - The Devil has made this land his playground - Mighty Power (Attracted a few looks - pounding uptempo gospel from LA) Frankie Newsome - Coming on strong, staying long - Sagport (Cracking uptempo funky beater from 1970) Blue Steam - I want a girl - Catamount (Great uptempo 7ts - originally the B side from 1976) In Refosoul So many tunes so little time!

great times indeed, because of the large turnover of records the quality control slipped at times. The important thing was that they were trying something different and like others that have written about it I was a 19 year old mod when I first went. I remember chatting to Keb about missing out on the past ( Wigan, Torch etc) and he said this is going to have it's own history and he was right. Loved the Fife allnighters Jock, it was absolutely bonkers, dancing on tables etc. I'd love to see the article too as I've never seen it.
