  1. The group on Bell was the UK-based one.
  2. You could make the same point about practically any era in Northern scene history.
  3. How can Bettye Swann "Kiss My Love Goodbye" be dragged into this? Overplayed–as is the case with many a ten quid monster–but one of the great singers on a great piece of Philly soul from a golden era. Bracketing it with the likes of The Four Vandals is a bit of a stretch.
  4. Same backing used on Richie Cee "Games Too Cold Blues" on Concept. Every reason to believe there are other uses of this track too by other artists as was the Fioravanti/Davis business model.
  5. The Independents on Wand?
  6. I have a US 45. Imported by Soul Bowl at the time.
  7. Having said all of that I simply don't know the definitive answer and Richard Searling has forgotten more about soul music than most of us will ever know! All part of the fun.
  8. I think it's really unlikely that he was a white guy if he won a talent contest at the Uptown Theatre. Also the way he sings on his Cotillion single, plus the lyrics, makes me sceptical of that particular claim. All the other acts on Dionn would appear to be African-Americans and most of the signings came via the Uptown where George and Gilda Woods (famous Philly DJ and his wife who co-owned owned Dionn) hosted the talent shows. The Woods' were prominent in black life in Philadelphia, including the Civil Rights movement. The idea they would get a white guy to sing "Keep On Striving" seems perverse.
  9. Bits 'n' Pieces features a male lead surely? Incredible vocals though.
  10. "Three Is A Crowd" is an excellent record and these non-Atco distributed things on Alston/Dade are undervalued unless there's specific scene demand for a particular title. I think TIAC has a lot of the same qualities as JP Robinson's "Keep Me Satisfied". That was a 'cheap collector's record' until it started to get plays in clubs. Tough to sell for more than £50 at the moment though.
  11. Paul there are US promos of both mixes. I think the 'handclap' mix (2149(S)) is far less common.
  12. To me too. Could be from the same sessions as "Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me".
  13. I suppose the next guessing game is to estimate by how much the Sandy Golden price beats The Professionals.
  14. The Manchester thing was a different event where the main focus was the book really rather than the film (although the trailer was shown). It was a weekend long festival on writing about music. I thought about mentioning it here but didn't want to be accused of self-promotion.
  15. The thing to bear in mind about facebook pages set up for any specific purpose is that they can sometimes take on a life of their own.
  16. I think the Jerry Butler/Brenda Lee Eager version is superior to The Dells. BLE takes the Marvin Junior parts and easily rivals him.
  17. I'm inclined to agree with the Len Jewell theory. I'd be really surprised if it's something not previously acknowledged to exist.
  18. Hi That's an image which was used on the film's sales agent's website and I'm pretty sure the version on there shouldn't have the 'Googan' typo. It was intended to be thumbnail-sized. I'd be amazed if it was the final poster. Expect an announcement regarding a release date pretty soon. The last parts of the process after post-production can be really difficult for independent films, particularly in the current financial climate. Rest assured that the things which have delayed release dates have all been geared toward the film getting the widest possible cinema release on terms which give it a fighting chance at the box office. The way some people on here talk you'd assume any of this was an easy process. It most assuredly isn't. I'm sure everyone involved would like to thank everyone for their patience. I'm sure they'd also like to thank Mike and the membership here for keeping the project (in its various forms) in the spotlight. It's been hugely appreciated.
  19. One thing I would say is that the way Discogs lists records is different to other sales sites. The picture of the 45 is obviously taken from the completed popsike listing of the cracked/chipped 45 last year. That doesn't mean to say that's the copy the seller is offering. If you look up a listing for any relatively common record you'll see one scan covering all the copies for sale, regardless of condition.
  20. Anyone rate the CD-only "Sleep Won't Come"? https://grooveshark.com/#!/search/song?q=The+Moments+Sleep+Won't+Come Surely would have been a great follow up to "Nine Times".
  21. Yes Steve. Also with "This Broken Heart". The flip of the Pye International release is "For All Time". Don't know if this suggests which one came first. Funny label Wand.
  22. It's the flip of "Beg Me", Wand 154.
  23. "Don't Pretend" "Lay This Burden Down"
  24. Love the New Orleans instrumentals like the Gentleman June Gardner, James Rivers on Kon-ti, Gaturs "Yeah You're Right" on Gatur or Electrostats on Three Oaks. As much variety in the instrumental sound as in vocal soul. Always partial to a touch of soul-jazz too. Thanks to Dave Thorley for playing this to me a few months ago. A sometime Colin Curtis spin at the Mecca: Belting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84s7LoOZhnk
