  1. I'd settle for 500 people in the right venue playing the music I love. Would I ever!
  2. Mystiques - good (played for years so don't really know why it's been posted); Charlene - ok (same) but these records are not what I'm talking about. Can't believe I'm even having to say that
  3. Oh Russ, bless you ... but no
  4. John Harris is as far as you can get from the stuff I'm talking about. As is Sir Guy (not my fave tune but it's ok). I'm talking the second rate blaxploitation (for want of another way of putting it) type stuff that just isn't good enough. Please don't ask me to give examples - I don't make any effort to know stuff I'm not interested in. If your taste has changed and you want to listen to that type of sound is there not a scene for that already? No disrespect meant, serious question. Edit: I consider myself pretty open minded and can put up with tunes that I don't personally rate no problem at all but it is getting to the point now where it spoils a night because there is so much of it. Maybe I should just avoid those venues
  5. What was the problem with the thread Chalky? I really don't get it. Sallie asked if there was any interest in a weekender and I said yes (possibly) as long as it was soul and not all that funky edged stuff because I know she has a big liking for that type of sound. What was wrong with saying that? Edit: yes it may have snowballed a little but hey, that's what happens. As for starting another topic? I really couldn't give a funk about discussing the merits of funky edged soul because I honestly couldn't give a funk about it.
  6. Why not tell people to stop talking about oldies too then? Plus I think the funky edge thing is relevant to this thread as I know Sallie does like that type of sound. She asked if people would be interested in a weekender and from that I took it that she would be running it and therefore I gave my opinion which I am entitled to do. No biggie and for what it's worth I thought the thread was quite constructive.
  7. Paul will be the first person to tell you I was not a fan of a lot of the stuff he played He did play some that I thought were crackers, but they were the more soulful ones
  8. I agree, there is the odd tune that hits the spot and I said exactly that on another thread recently. It's just that on the whole they lack that certain something that makes a tune special (for me) and that is the reason I go out.
  9. Not so Russ. I have been going to venues for a lot of years and it is only very recently that I have had cause to say this. People are playing stuff now that is just not good enough (for me) for no other reason than to play something uknown or what they consider to be unknown. Sallie asked the question and I answered honestly. I would go (if possible) if it was a soul weekender
  10. No idea about the scene - I just think it's pants (on the whole)
  11. Sounds good in principle as long as it is soul and not all that funky edge stuff that just isn't good enough! Also the location would have a big part to play in it's success / failure.
  12. Yep, great photos!
  13. It was an absolute debacle! Fantastic. Loved it
  14. I think you mean Henning from Switzerland and yes great records and a lovely guy.
  15. Hi Len No jewel from me but this reminds me of a tape I had about 20 years ago, loads of great tracks on there but no listing. Like you I slowly managed to put titles and artists to tunes but one track alluded me. I counted on the fact it was called I Want to Thank You (or something similar) - do you know how many records there are called Thank You? Fecking hundreds - I know cause I listened to most of them! Anyway, fast forward 15 years (found out what the record was by now btw, took about 2 years though) had a video of Shotts anniversary here, had it years and was watching it again one day when the camera zoomed in on the decks while Andy Whitmore was DJing and the next record he played was the one I'd been looking for. Couldn't believe it cause the video was made before the tape. The record was Matt Brown - Thank You Baby - Jar Val. Phew!
  16. Have to say I don't ever remember seeing a copy of Charles Brandy for sale (not saying there hasn't been one of course). 2 fantastic sides and up there as one of the records I have wanted most since I started on this road. Absolute bargain!!
  17. Exactly why one man's upfront is another man's y-front I didn't know every record on the list either but I knew a fair few and hand on heart there were some on there I didn't care for. That wouldn't stop me going to a venue though, I am but one in a room full so certainly don't expect the music to be tailored to suit my taste. The 'funky edge' is not for me though (generally speaking), on the whole it's just not good enough (for me). I will keep listening though, a good record is a good record regardless of when it was made or what pigeon hole it comes from.
  18. Who decides if a DJ is worth his salt? Would that be the said DJ? It has never been about us (punters / DJ's / whoever) and it never will be!
  19. Yes, had this a few years ago when I was doing some research for a uni project. I think it re-sets itself every day
  20. I absolutely love live acts and will certainly miss the variety that used to be on offer every year. Not for everyone of course but it was for me. I also love watching the wildlife in the foyer which will no doubt increase
  21. And us! Could you handle one of your Grumpy Soul hangovers on the way back though
  22. I always picture people being knocked over backwards as his voice hits them it's that powerful! Incredible vocals.
  23. Our side is the only side that seems bothered. Go figure! I've always said you can't argue with people that aren't as passionate as you are or feel as strongly as you do, there's no way you can win. Like you say, it will go on ... and on ... and on ... and on ...
