  1. Really? All guy to me. Anyway, if you listen to the B side it is definitely male. Not only the vocal but the words - you're coming on too strong girl, too high class (that's from memory mind, not played it for years)
  2. If you guys think this is what I'm talking about then I give up
  3. Yep, same here. Come on guys, list the artists and titles so us skivers can join in
  4. Couldn't do that at Phil Armstong's do in Derby (2nd room) - no idea where the camera is Two cameras would be better - nowhere to hide and rightly so
  5. These type of records are not what we're talking about. How many times!
  6. After Lance Hill's version of Make My Love I can't help hearing a C&W influence to the tune Ever wish you'd never heard something?
  7. Adds another dimension to the night too. I love them
  8. As opposed to something that isn't as good? Absolutely!
  9. I consider myself pretty easy going (a lot more so than some of my mates that's for sure lol) and a few tracks here and there (even every hour) is no problem at all. There's getting to be more and more of it though and the quality really isn't good enough (for me). If the dance floor is busy it's job done - but it usually isn't and there lies the problem.
  10. Good for you but why make a comparison to pop / blue eyed / Asda soul which is not what I am talking about. Far from it As for records growing on you (like you mentioned in your previous post) I can honestly say that isn't how it is for me. I hear a record and I either like it or I don't. As entertaining and as interesting as these threads are, they never change things in the real 'soul' world so I guess the answer is to just avoid venues playing the stuff you don't want to hear. All I know is if this is the furture of the scene then it's not for me. Thankfully (I hope) there will be enough unimaginative and narrow minded venues around to ensure there is at least somewhere to go that plays the kind of unexciting tunes that I prefer
  11. It is all music yes, but is it all soul music? I'm not so sure If it was all soul music there wouldn't be a funk scene surely? I did ask before but do they play hours of northern soul at funk do's? Also, do they play the kind of records that are being played at soul do's now? Serious question as I am really interested I'm against pigeon holing as much as anyone, a good record is a good record no matter when it was made. Whether you like a record or not really doesn't matter - if the dance floor is full then it's job done in my book. I have never once said what should or should not get played. All I've said is a lot of it is just not good enough (for me) which is every bit as valid as saying it is good enough surely? What I do find hard to understand though is why these tunes weren't played years ago? Could it be that they weren't considered good enough compared to all the other tunes that were being discovered at the time? If they weren't good enough then what makes them good enough now? I really don't think it's a case of people not wanting to hear something new or that they are happy to stay stuck in the past. Jeez, hearing new stuff is what it's all about for me and almost everyone I know. It's more that the records fall way short of the high standards and quality of what's gone before.
  12. Sounds good. Not sure a live act is essential but I love live acts so no complaint here either way. Would an informal lunchtime / afternoon session on the Sunday work? (I'm assuming it won't be a bank holiday) and Saturday only tickets are a good idea
  13. Yeah, maybe out and out funk wasn't the best description to use especially given my limited knowledge on the subject. I'm talking about records that are as far removed from soul (for me) as you can get, like some of the ones Russ posted Which I suppose are probably as far removed from out and out funk as you can get if you are genuinely into out and out funk There are loads of records with a funky edge that are fantastic, but that's not what I'm talking about - or what I understood the thread to be about. It is the heavier stuff that (for me) just isn't good enough
  14. You know what I mean. It certainly isn't about the Delegates of Soul!
  15. Absolutely and again a million miles away from the out and out funk that this thread is about
  16. I have heard George a few times and sometimes he has played more soulful style tunes (some crackers too I must say) and other times full on funk. In his defence (not that he needs me or anyone to come to his defence) he is a funk DJ asked to DJ at a soul do which is a million miles away from a soul DJ playing funk
  17. I know next to nothing about funk because I don't care for it (as a rule). That said, I know what it sounds like. I do know a little about soul music however and on this particular note I give up! Edit: Have you read this thread? It is the out and out funk type tunes we are talking about here
  18. I know less than nothing but I'm sure there is more to funk than a guitar. Jeez if you are going to apply that rule of thumb, God knows how many out and out soul records would be re-classified as funk
  19. Me too. Jeez, what's funk about Ron Kenoly?
  20. Not for me it isn't!!! Embarrassing as it is, this does happen. That's not the DJs fault though and half the time I'm not entirely convinced they're not doing it to take the p*ss
  21. Hi Rob Yep, I hear ya. Nothing wrong with oldies, they are all oldies at the end of the day and I for one would not have it any other way. Have to say I wasn't a fan of the Old Bell as a venue, music was great mind and a good mix too. See you at your do next year if not before
  22. Yes it's all relative. We are talking about a rare weekender here though and as has already been established (or at least assumed) the attendance would not be as large as the more commercial events. Therefore I will say again, 500 people in a venue playing the music I love would be fantastic
  23. Pretty sure the big weekenders wouldn't be happy with 500 people
