as a previous poster said , a good yardstick is about 12 months judged from the classic era 73-76 (though many were booted much sooner thus their monster status was shorter) of course some 45's which have remained also unique or one offs maybe two of..can sometimes achieve a lifespan greater and are sometimes not really thought of as an oldie cos they were never hammered to death in the first place, so to simplify once a record has had it spot in the spotlight and then peters out its usually referred to as an oldie..in much the same way as a pop record..there is no exact timeline but 12 months is a good example i think...

no..its common sense..here's another example.. just suppose you'd never heard 'out on the floor' dobie gray. Would it make it a newie? of course not only to your ears..once its been documented ( antique or historical ) or published or made available to the public for the first time thats the start point.You cannot shift the goal post ..even if its a bit obscure..even the most knowledgeable dj,fan or collector will come across a sound at some point that is new to their ears but known to others..and if i seem to make it sound simplistic thats because it is..its a simple question easily answered..all in my opinion of course...

an oldie is an oldie..if you've never heard it before it's still an oldie..i find loads of sounds every day ive not heard before..most are oldies..new to me but still OLDIES...and that is my stance on oldies...

simple...once discovered and played during its first flush of being a new 'top sound'..it subsequently becomes an oldie. Of course if you've never heard it before its 'an oldie ive never heard before'..however some 45's were so exclusive that they were considered new/top sounds after their first public exposure eg the twans ' i can't see him again' originally an Ian levine exclusive..was lent out to Sam (maybe others) before Richard Searling bought it, making it massive all over again..(kind of an oldie)..got it..good.

again thanks..the real question i'm asking is - was Invitation a song that existed in any format (work in progress/part recorded?) or was made up during that jam session? I ve had it on the RS LP 'Invitation' since about 87 and find it still a haunting song..

Can anyone shed any further light on the song 'Invitation'? I have a Rolling Stones 'unofficial' LP of alternate takes during the recording process of 'Dirty Work'. Amongst the 7 tracks is a near 16 minute Jam of a song called 'Invitation'. Featuring Bobby Womack on vocal with additional ( and unnecessary ) vocal by Jagger is it nonetheless a superbly soulful offering. Many years ago I sent a clip of the song to Rod Dearlove who proclaimed it as one of the most soulful songs he'd ever heard.According to the sleeve notes it was recorded between July-Nov 1985 at RPM sudio/Right track NYC.Also rumoured to involve Don Covay. this is only a 9 min clip and i can't upload my clip from the album but you get the idea.It certainly seems to me to be a song/work in progress i'm guessing written/co written by Womack.I can't find a released version or anything related to it. I know of Bobbys immense talent but surely its too good to have been made up on the spur of the moment..and Jagger merely echoes the Womack lead.The session may have included Sly Stone, and more probably Chuck Leavell on keyboards.Would be interested to hear comment on the song itself and also any further info related to its recording.TIA.

If Craig Charles considers himself a spokesman for the northern soul scene he's deluded.As for the racism issue, i think its a myth.I never saw any of this during 1972-78 while active on the scene.About 5 years ago i was to attend a local Frank Beverley show in Philly, many people warned me against it..citing racial issues. The cab driver dropped me off 2 miles from the venue as he was scared.I walked the remaining 2 miles, buying t shirts along the way. It was a sports stadium, rammed, approx 40,000.I was the only white face, no funny looks..or trouble..the only surprise was that a 'white guy was into FB'...
