  1. ..is he still in UK? i thought he relocated to US...
  2. ..i had great stuff also..among them..soul bros inc on pyramid, the second copy of 'sweet music' chris cerf ( a massive exclusive for soul sam at the time, i sold mine to Kev roberts)..Joseph moore, Enchanters 'love with your daughter' several copies..plus loads more semi known which i used to sell on for £2-3..again i wish i had kept more..
  3. .... MUST'VE BEEN A GOOD ONE TO FOOL YOU!
  4. very true..and many stayed away in a sort of protest..definitely not a true reflection of the casino at that time..tho the film is revered as it is probably the only in existance from that period.Unfortunatey at this time there is no footage of the great dancers who used to perform from 73-75 ..lost to memory..
  5. ..CURIOUS TO KNOW WHICH WAS THE FIRST ISSUE, SPQR OR LEGRAND? OR WERE THEY SIMULTANEOUS..WERE THERE LATER VERSIONS/UPDATED REMIXES? AND CURRENT VALUES PLS..THANKS IN ADVANCE..
  6. ..first time i went..April '74..there was definitely talk of ..best dancers at the front..i spent a good couple of hours watching Gethro dancing approx 6'-10' from the front. My first venture onto the floor was well towards the back..tho it was difficult to find a spot during the early days.Later i danced at the front, mostly to keep an eye on my bag which was on the stage, tho i was a fair dancer.Later i remember a guy who would dance side to side across the entire width of the floor, people would move out of his way..we nicknamed him typewriter..no idea who he was..
  7. ..yes..remember the beachcomber from early '74 onwards maybe for a year or so? there was a DJ who played mainly oldies..and scalding cups of tea! Always had a very tense atmoshere.. i think because so many people were coming down! and yes there were a few mean looking characters..i never dared to ask anyone to look at their records..i once taped a DJ session in there ..esp ' comin to your rescue'..when i got home ..discovered the Batts were low and when i got new ones the track played twice as fast & DJ sounded like pinky & perky..i think it was mainly to keep the folks off the streets as nobody seemed too bothered about going home..as for bouncers..i once took Steve Clarke from Worksop to Wigan about the same time..he WAS hard! he was always skint..so he led me down the side of the casino thru a side door..thru the corridors..until a bouncer appeared..Steve glared at him..and he never said a word! just let us pass..needless to say i was more than a little anxious..whatever happened to Steve? would Kev Roberts remember him?
  8. ..at the crucial age of 14/15..youth club..fairground..(growing up in Skegness)..football grounds..even school disco..small collisions..pushing you toward the music..the style, girls etc were important but the driving force was always the music. So, the 'Skid' a fairground ride operated by Brian Saunders a local with enormous sideburns being older had all the Motown hits..plus Atlantic/Stax..was a popular hangout..he played mostly soul 45's thru a sound system to attract customers.First heard the Tams 'Hey girl'..heard ska at Molineux ..soul at Bramhall lane,Hillsboro, and City ground.I then hung out with two soul sisters from Boston who procurred a C60 tape from a local DJ/soul fan..no track listing..(it took me quite some time to figure it out) but many great tunes..'Darkest Days'..'Cigarette Ashes'..Barbara Lynn, Carstairs,Major Lance..this would be the summer of 1971..then with me in tow the Rainbow sisters took me to the Boston Gliderdrome..and the 'Starlight room..where many top acts had starred..Stevie Wonder,Ike & Tina.and many more..the first time there was similar to first time at the casino..kind of 'candy store'..feeling.I remember hearing 'Soothe Me'..'Thats enough'.'Thank you baby' ''Here i go again'..that was it..later in '72 at the Maple room in Skegness during the summer soul fans from Boston/Kings Lynn would bring records for the local DJ (Col Custers roadshow) to spin..Sam & kitty, Sliced Tomatoes..and the buzzword was ..THE TORCH..after the Casino opened , i moved to Sheffield so i go go each week..
  9. ..WOULD ANYONE CARE TO HAZARD A GUESS AT THE VALUE FOR NR MINT IN COMPANY SLEEVE..
  10. yeah i wondered about that too..so, working alongside a black woman from Knoxville later Atlanta..i asked her..she confirmed it was a black slang thing for a guy who steals your girl..
  11. ..i'm inclined to agree...i remember the footage being different..i can remember Tony blackburn messing up the intro as he announced that the dancers would be doing a dance routine called the footsee...maybe it was a rehearsal..for sure thats Gethro in the red/white striped footie shirt..maybe Bob Monkhouse recorded it...
  12. ..yep remember you tellin me about that when we met up at the hotel nr heathrow just before you and Mac flew to the US.I know its from the album..but its a cut above his usual added instrumentals ...i wondered who played the strings..i think its much better than the vocal original..and why was it never booted?
  13. ..anyone have any further info on the 'dress rehearsal' 45?..Ian D was looking into it?..prob his best tailor made/remix effort...
  14. ..in reverse, i bought an original of The Servicemen 'Helping hand' and cos the labels were reversed thought it was a bootleg..moved it on for a quid...
  15. shame..pity they didnt put an inst version on the flip..then it would be worth buying..
  16. as a young teenager growing up in Skegness..i remember many bank holidays..scooters lined up on the foreshore from one end to the other Mods completely taking over the compass gardens..i'd recently bought 'Patches' Clarence carter, but the real gem was on the b side, 'just cant leave your love alone' also remember dancing to Long shot kick de bucket at my school disco..and Roy 'C' shotgun Wedding..
  17. yep i take your point..but this sounds really bassy, cond looks ok..i had a copy back in the day but cant remember what it played/sounded like..the Brenda lee jones i got off you plays fantastic by comparison..just wondered if anyone else's copy sounded similar to mine..
  18. ...just bought a copy ..played it..sounds very bassy..so checked against the CD version..totally different..is my copy duff? are all copies like this? changed decks, reduced bass..still far too bassy..lyrics sound muffled..whats the verdict?? thanks for looking..
  19. bloody hell!! i always thought they started post Torch...
  20. that must be one of the very earliest!!
  21. ..what a great story!
  22. .had three once upon a time..all 1944 WILLYS..all long gone..you can still pick em up..thru MV clubs..
  23. its all been said and done by now surely.....except my notw type behind the scenes, fallouts, rows, never to be talked about (maybe when i do my autobiography) personal experience of the whole disaster!!
  24. me too!!! i have a copy that is a demo that carries over the drumstick..its a paler colour..maybe a little thinnish..now about 8 yrs ago Dave Rai took a look and even he couldnt be sure, he couldnt remember it being booted! so,,was it? and in ltd quantity? its certainly not the vibrant red of most original backbeat copies...but its not off centre..
