  1. Ian..unfortunately due to existing film commitments our client Mr John Travolta will be unable to commit to this project, we understand a counter offer has been made to Bob Carolgees ..we think this is an excellent choice and wish him well....
  2. yeah you're right ..i just wanted to get the thread going..your pal looks straight out of central casting for the sopranos..great pic..
  3. brilliant...or hilda woods....vera duckworth..the pics are a much needed addition..
  4. REMEMBER WHEN CASTING..CHOICES DO NOT HAVE TO BEAR PHYSICAL RESEMBLANCE (MAKE UP CAN TAKE CARE OF THAT) ITS MORE TO DO WITH PERSONALITY TRAITS..IE THE KATIE PRICE CHOICE..
  5. KEB DARGE RAB C NESBITT OR GORDON STRACHAN MAYBE-FREEDOM FOR SCOTLAND
  6. OK..ive got your attention..so, IMAGINE..Danny Boyle & Speilberg making the history of Northern Soul on film..who would you cast as prime characters.THIS IS NOT MEANT TO DEFAME OR INSULT ANYONE..just a bit of fun..i'll start ..but obviously my casting is centered around the earlier years based on my experience of those concerned or my observation of..in no particular order..and once we've cast the roles..i'll figure a budget based on availability/locations..this comes out of an idea i had some years ago whilst working on Soulboy.Shimmy the director had gone to meet Russ Winstanley..Kev Roberts had agreed in principle to some kind of participation, so i suggested that as we had (in principle) two of the original Casino DJ's why not ask Richard Searling as well? I offered up a scene where all three where to be cast as coach drivers outside the Casino..chatting and remarking that (northern soul) would never catch on..although SHimmy excitedly reported that all three 'were up for it' unfortunatley nothing came of it..pity it could have been the one gem in an otherwise dull film..anyway cast away.. CHARACTER ACTOR/PERSONALITY AVAILABILTY/FEE KEV ROBERTS DAVID DICKINSON YOU BET!..UNDISCLOSED RUSS WINSTANLEY JOHN PRESCOTT DEFFO-FREE PIES FOR LIFE IAN LEVINE KATIE PRICE WITHOUT A DOUBT kEITH MINSHULL COMPO NOT AVAILABLE GERRY MARSHALL BERT MILLICHIP ? FRANK AKA IAN D GEORGE CLOONEY (the page 3 of NS) EXPENSIVE YOU GET THE IDEA...ANYONE FOR THE CASTING COUCH?
  7. ..if the top 500 is based on dancefloor action or reaction..then nobody can argue..i actually thought it was based more on collectors,DJ's,respected NS individuals, generally people who've been on the scene a while etc..its a vote with your feet poll..i dread to think what would have been the outcome should a book have been polled during say 76-77 when levines tailor mades and disco dirge were spun..much the same i guess..Torch diehards v mecca shufflers..you cant keep everyone happy..even if someone compiled the absolute best ever 500 of true northern, underplayed, rare, broke the mould, created the mould..and unreleased gems..it wouldn't be as hit..should've been available in 74..i think its a coffee table book ..nothing more..nothing less..
  8. ..THE EMPERORS NEW CLOTHES..Northern soul has changed beyond understanding since the early or glory days..i dont need a book to tell me or advise me what are the top 500 NS records..as for new stuff..i can find out all about that from SOUL SOURCE/YOU TUBE ETC..I have the 1st book and its worth a read..i go to it once in a while..its a bit like a manship guide once you have one do you really need another.(.i'm fascinated by the transformation of the scene..and love the buzz words of handbaggers, fancy dress brigade, chin strokers, die hards..etc.).its like someone trying to compile a top 500 antiques or top 500 must see ancient sites..EVERYONE has their own 500..and opinion of what is or isnt northern soul..the NS scene has always had its fair share of sheep..and promoters and opportunists willing to exploit that..will it ever turn full circle and play proper northern soul circa 73/74..i doubt it..i recently took an american friend to a northern soul night at the city hall in Sheffield..unfortunately it was nothing like i'd described..give me Terrible Tom anyday..
  9. Agree..never saw one for sale all the time i was doing niters/collecting during the 70's..Dave Rai picked up a beat copy in the 80's and he was pleased to have that..tis a hard record..
  10. inst first..big sound post Torch early Wigan..
  11. massive around 75/76 esp at the casino...
  12. agree but many 45's have issue or demo label differences..sometimes the demo label is poor or the other way round..i'm betting the matrix is the same on all three..the demo and issue with smaller font seem to be anyway..
  13. exactly my point..SOMEBODY ..must still have an orig issue from before it was repressed!..as for the bubbling label..i have a Rolling stones MR pressed promo of 'Tumbling Dice'..has the same bubbling on label..and both 45's seem to have been pressed within weeks of each other..
  14. ..blimey..that brings it back..i had an advantage in that my dad had a mens clothes shop..he had accounts with Ben Sherman (whom he used to meet in London) and Levis back in the 60's..anyway it was hard to get them in my size at 16 cos i was slim..but then he managed to get get some samples of (junior) Ben Sherman size 141/2 also a crombie from Covent gdn..later i had the (rupert type trs) which were more military wool tartan than bay city rollers..also two tone check bags..i dyed my brogues white (like correspondents shoes) anh a pair of crepe wedge bumper shoes i dyed silver..this was from '71 to '72..later budgie jkt..more bags inc my first cord pair..then it was bowling shirts..dragonette..and the first custom pair (I believe) of high waist bags..with extra pockets on the legs (a la combat) which carried my notebook for listing 45's..and spare vest..had a cream leather bomber like Steve McQueen racing type..then '74 a beret..after that a 1920's wool almost to the floor gangster coat and wool 8 panel cap..after that toned it all down..short hair ..suits..
  15. not far off we sold levis for 37/-6d (almost £4)..wrangler 35/-
  16. great pic..if you look at the LP covers from around that time..there was definitely an Italian or continental look going on..though the Levis (more than wrangler etc) were firmly US..and with style icons like Sidney Poitier ..Harry Belafonte..and lesser Sammy davis..its not hard to see why this look caught on ..especially in the more laid back climes of LA...
  17. not sure how long..but as a kid my auntie once told my elder brother that Howlin Wolf played there the week previous..and her daughter in law told me when Ike & Tina played it was sold out and they were helped in thru a toilet window..after hearing a 20 min version of Proud Mary from outside..
  18. the actor John Mccardle told me about 'At the top' or 'Room at the top' in Wigan..he travelled there from liverpool on his scooter roughly same time as he also visited the Wheel.
  19. very true..however in our YC..we took 45's that we'd managed to aquire ..more obscure Stax/Atlantic..i had roscoe robinson..soul bros six..mitch ryder..''IN'' sounds rather than northern soul..i first became aware of Northern thru B&S..and when a girl gave a C90 tape, and Torch badge sometime '72..
  20. spot on..my dad was a tailor and subscribed to Town magazine..remember that issue as a kid..wish i still had it..also the Stones first manager ALO..was a trendsetter..his first book is worth a read...
  21. ive a book somewhere and the author relates the original london mod look..very early sixties..and literally about a dozen fashion concious guys in the know..i think marc feld (marc bolan) may have been one of them..
  22. yep..i was suede at school..the CO look was almost an overnight one off thing..somebody had the book but it wasnt an easy read..it was always about the look..
