  1. the biggest surprise this thread throws up is the variety of sounds disliked. Some I'd consider stone cold northern soul classics, others decent records probably played too often, and then some lesser 'soulful' which were massive in the heyday and now are almost hated. Some are truly annoying..Scratchy..etc..but again compare them to lesser known, almost unknown rarer items ( sometimes played imo only coz they're rare) and it doesnt stack up.Instead of 'keep the faith and right on' I suggest a new northern soul soundbite 'Northern soul-Each to their own!'....
  2. dunno but i always rated it..more of a listen to track than dance obv...always check the B side!!
  3. i think a lots of these dislikes are based on the fact the listener has heard them far too much (understandable to a degree if you've been listening since mid 70's)..but honestly some are not crap as often cited!!..and i think some are jumpin on a bandwagon..it seems Frank Wilson is fave to be maligned..
  4. i had one many years ago..early 70's ..very poor sound quality, heavy vinyl with a rough outer edge..
  5. Dust my broom one of the greatest soul/northern tracks ever!!...pounding beat..

  8. ..some real nice stuff on here!
  9. ive looked into copyright before re some of my designs.it can be a nightmare.Unless the persons concerned have radically changed the original design it could prove difficult as they did not create the image. They would also have to copyright each subject, ie T shirts, bags, badges etc and then each country, very expensive with no guarantee as Ian D already mentioned.Personally i think they've a bloody cheek, as for those who dont care , its the principle. The northern soul fist logo has been around a long time..its an icon of the culture and should be preserved as is.The origins are cloudy, and people will use that image.(I painted a huge circled black fist based on the ISC image on the drivers door of my first car back in 1973) but to try to copyright it is seriously over stepping the mark.I'm against the copyright.i suggest a boycott of their product as a warning.
  10. i think originally it was a levine 'mecca'spin..he raved about it..a month or two later it was forgotten...

  14. ..once upon a time..northern soul was reasonably well defined..almost impossible now..to answer the original post..R&B was blues with rhythm..obviously..the next step up from the blues, bridging the gap between soul. The early rare soul clubs like the wheel ,played John Lee hooker & Bo Diddley (& others) R&B tunes so yes it could be Northern soul.Fast forward 30 odd years and more obscure R&B is now being played as Northern Soul..there will always be a crossover area as one music type starts to begin another phase..but for me, generally R&B is not northern Soul, some great tracks..for sure..but not really northern soul..then of course theres Tommy Bush 'i dont like it' which i always thought was a bit R&B..which i class as northern and the Ray Agee monster..thats as simple as i can make it..
  15. thats sounds interesting..i assumed Capitol labels were moulded on..so must have been very clever..personally i'm all for creating something that looks like an original..like LP only tracks or acetates as long as there is no intention to deceive for profit..
  16. why not share..i for one am curious...
  17. ..back in the mid 80's i found 2 LP's in a local library in Lambeth, S London. One was an R&B album containing excello blues tracks..i'd always liked blues but was surprised to hear a track called 'voodoo working'..i thought it sounded more northern soul..the other was more rockabilly but contained a midtempo very soulful sounding track..something to do with shoes,or walking..of course years later i heard the Charles Sheffield track was a current biggie...
  18. ..i remember Keep the faith as a Dave Godin sign off..along with Right on now!..cant remember ever saying either..its begining had some association with the black power movement though probably only as a recognition of minority wishing to be recognised..KTF was more of a slogan that was writtten more than spoken..i had the single black glove and right on badges bitd but has no real interest in black power or the Panthers..more fashion than following..KTF faded as the northern soul whirlwind took force in late 73/74..i guess you could say Dave Godin was the Bruce Forsyth of northern soul..
  19. we sold Solatio shoes in our retail shop 'Blue Serge' in Skegness from 1973..they were hard to get..we went to a wholesalers in London..eventually we had an account with them..and sold them regularly through the shop and mail order along with Frank Wright..
  20. well..i'll chuck my two penneth in..it had a resonance of the 1977 doc..in that it disappointed..sorry..(i remember feeling very disappointed in '77 when i watched this England air.).this was a decent effort but, every filmic attempt still has a comedy element..it reminded me at times of those awful rock n roll reunions where really old buggers still dressed like teenagers. No programme, film or otherwise has ever successfully managed to transmit just how cool it was to be into northern soul 1972-74 possibly 75.Any one not into northern can do a daft impression of a northern soul fan ( like flat caps and pigeons)..never the cool stuff..it was a decent effort and explains some of the complexities of NS especially to those who are unfamiliar , particularly americans..but always falls short. You need the arena production team to do it justice..highlights..Dave Withers, and the young souls..lows..the fancy dress aspect and i found the scottish girls comments way off the mark..Kung fu?..bollocks!!!..the dance moves came from UK hipsters imitating the soul performers of the 60's..(ps Searling always comes across well)..5/10...could do better..

  22. your sarcastic remarks..fully underscore your admission to be disillusioned with the scene..if so, find something else more suited to your style..
  23. IF YOU LIKE IT..FAIR ENOUGH..I MAKE NO APOLOGY FOR HAVING BEEN AROUND AT THE GOLDEN AGE OF NORTHERN SOUL AND INTOXICATED BY THE SUPERB QUALITY AND CLASS OF THE VAST MAJORITY OF SOUNDS..WHICH OBVIOUSLY IS THE BASIS FOR MY OPINION...
  24. ..and by contrast to the original post..last night i ventured out to a bar in Atlanta nr me where Agent45 was spinning a mix of northern soul,R&B,funky stuff, modern and old school reggae...i heard many very good sounds that were new to me..had a great night time..im sure the punters didnt know the rarity or importance of those discs ..and it didnt matter..they just did their thing..so i'm glad i made the effort..and its more than a 10 minute walk from Sheffield!!!!
