World Northern Soul Dance Championship: Info please
Rick Scott replied to Paul-s's topic in All About the SOUL
Nicely Put words of Wisdom Mark. As i have said many times in the past the Damage was Done when the Media Cameras were allowed into the Casino to make, 'THAT' Documentary then followed by by every Tom, Dick and Harry in the Media wanting to get in on the Act and doing it all Pretty Badly. The scene Started, evolved, and Developed through Word and Mouth and with Flyers put out at each others venues (as long as they didn't CLASH) and you always asked for permission to put flyers out before doing so, and some actually re arranging events so as that didn't happen particularly if they were local, so was the Family type Atmosphere around the original underground Scene, and it would have survived to this day without the Outside Interference of the Media, we didn't Need It and the Majority of the Soul Crowd Didn't Want It as it EVOLVED all by its self . Events were also advertised in Specialist Soul Mags at the time too but that was acceptable as they were aimed at the people On The Scene And In The Know who bought them. -
Wasn't aware of that Chalky, I Still have a Sony Walkman WM-EX 170 (With Mega Bass (AWLS) In An Un Opened Pack i won in a competition back in the day from one of the music mags (1997) I had already bought a Panasonic Stereo Cassette Player RQ-P45 (1997)with XBS (Extra Bass System) & 3D Equalizer which looked like a Sony Walkman which is probably why i never opened the Walkman,

Strange how things come round again decades later what with old School Games consoles too making a come back (Would Make a Great thread i think) Any way looked on my shelves and checked my old tapes out and a lot were John Manship Sales Tapes and some were from Glossy Mags Tapes (given away with) back to the 70s and even the New Musical Express (NME) were giving Cassette Tapes away right across the music spectrum and i came across the one soul cassette they did 'HIT THE ROAD STAX' (SPRING 1982) NME 003 (3rd Cassette in the series) nothing rare on it but nice to have for nothing. Side One. 1. Booker T & The MGs -Green Onions 2. Booker T & The MGs - Red Beans & Rice 3. Carla Thomas - B-A-B-Y 4. Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music 5. Eddie Floyd - Raise Your Hand 6. Eddie Floyd - Knock On Wood Side Two. 1. The Mar-keys - Last Night 2. The Mar - Keys Philly Dog 3. Sam & Dave - You Don't Know Like I Know 4. Sam & Dave - Hold On I'm Coming 5. Otis Redding - Respect 6. Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness

Not got one to be honest, more interested in how good the product is re song, voice, backing vocals and the Band etc. The label may be one thing, but as the saying goes, 'It's Whats' In The Grove That Counts'

Worst Experience ever visiting an All Nighter,
Rick Scott replied to Hooker1951's topic in All About the SOUL
A Bad experience or two for me over the years, firstly at the Lincoln Drill Hall All Niters where we were dropped off by our Mini Bus near to the Front Doors when we were greeted by a Large bunch of Local football Hooligans Who focused their attentions on me carrying my record boxes and sensed i was in for a bloody good hiding after one of them got into my face and said "And where do you think you come from then?" i said "Scunthorpe", and HE replied saying, "not good news you coming from Scunthorpe is it?" Thankfully the Missus had the foresight to rush in through the Venue Doors and fetch Chris Dalton (Organiser) and a few Burly Guys and get us all safely inside, he then told us these Thugs had been causing trouble outside all nite since people started queuing up and the Police had to Move them on on numerous occasions only for them to keep returning so a Nite remembered for all the wrong reasons as we heard that other Soul Fans had not been so lucky and did get set upon. Other time was after a Cleethorpes Pier All Niter when a group of people we later found out were from Manchester Tried to grab my 500 size record box from me as we walked down the ramp from the Pier to our Coach, luckily with the people from our coach and other friends and attendies who saw what was going on managed to fend them off. so yes both of these occasions were very Scary but thankfully the only serious events etched into my memory from past years of Happy Soul Related Memories -
John Anderson (Soul Bowl) Discovery Which as History tells us was an unreleased track and is Correct Artist and Title as far as we are aware and yes ended up in Pokes Hands who made it a Monster at the Cleethorpes Pier and Winter gardens and found Favour at all the other places it got spins at by him. I ended up with the Acetate which i believe was Pokes played for many years before selling on to Chris Dalton after he constantly badgered me to sell it to him which i stupidly did and regretted it straight away and yes Chris still plays it to this day, one of the best Funky instrumentals to get played it has to be said.

Hugh Boynton - Blue Original * Rarity - Value *
Rick Scott replied to Rick Scott's topic in Look At Your Box
Thanks MFS45s Yep, and does make you wonder how many copies of the BLUE original were originaly pressed up by the record company on release at the time and what happened to them? possibly a local Hit ? Who Knows, but even so for copies not to turn up for sale in the USA never mind the UK in ANY quantity over the years is a mystery for sure. -

And as far as i know was my old DJ Stable Mate Pokes original Copy which was used for the Yellow Repress and came with typed out letter from Garry thanking Robin for the use of the Original Record so That Jesse Boone could Cut A New Master from in his Own Studio, Jesse also said that he could have re-pressed it the same as the first pressing if wanted that way but Gary told him of arrangements made with Robin so he did it differently, so a nice little in sight to the History of this wonderful record. My Blue Copy has the record address along the bottom edge of the label scratched out with a pin which was a bit of a trade mark of Soul Bowl back in the day as ewe all know -

Thanks for that Simon, very interesting Link re "Poke Ruined My Life" and comment left. Will expand on other connections to that Story later...... -
That Poke segmont explains a lot about the record itself and found it very interesting being a stable mate of Poke as most of you will know during the Cleethorpes Years, and as a DJ and Friend had a lot of time for him. He knew a bloody good tune when he head it

Reason i ask the question as there have been some many supposedly rare records put up for Auction and fetching really Mind Blowing prices which have been said to be not that rare according to many members on here. So, Here is a record that that has never come up for sale/auction on Popsike or Discogs (original blue label) Hugh Boynton (soul-po-tion records SP144) US 1974 Blue Label Original. Hugh Boynton (soul-po-tion records SP144) US 1989 Yellow Label Re-issue. (Lots of these About) So If this came up let's say with JM Rare Record (or anyone else for that matter) for Auction How do we think this would fair in the Grand Scheme of things as this seems like a very rare record? Looking forward very much to your train of thoughts on this one.

Ouch! I had the same thing happen to me at a do by a rather AMPLE CHESTED young Lady who leaned over the decks and caught the Balance Mechanism at back of the Tone Arm badly scratching my copy of Cornell Gunter - Love In My Heart (Together Records) now with a loud click at the intro, was not playing at the time but all cued up to play, was not best pleased as i never even got an apology, was gutted as just purchased from Soul Bowl for £75 which was a lot of money back then and was about to get its first airing for me
