  3. https://www.vanessahaynes.com Her 2006 album is superb, she's the kind of real new talent that needs exposure imvho. Roger
  4. Only with idiots who can only post one line inane shite on forums . . .
  5. That's like a line out of my own autobiography mate!!
  6. You're a prime case in point, Beeks - I can guarantee you that because of this forum and some of the fuss surrounding you, regardless of it being of your making or what others have said, people wouldn't book you to DJ purely because of it, despite never having met you or know anything about you and regardless of how good a DJ you might be. Not that you'd be bothered in the slightest I suppose, but that can be how it works. All a bit daft really. Imvho of course. Roger
  7. Doesn't always work like that though does it Jayne. I'm sure that vocal punters and other DJ's also getting in the ear of the promoter can sometimes have an effect as well. Sad but true.
  8. Do the majority even care who the DJ's are as long as they hear the music they want to? And how many promoters would book a DJ they don't actually like for whatever reason despite them always doing the business behind the decks when they play anywhere?
  9. I believe this was taken recently when Steve was DJ'ing:

  12. I don't think the Fantastic Four 'Back In Circulation' or 'Night Time Is The Right Time' ever got the attention they deserved. Great tracks, both of them. https://www.emusic.com/album/The-Fantastic-...d/10991742.html
  13. I don't post anything contentious now Ian. People are always watching, ready to pounce . . .
  14. Sorry Phil, I'm chocka with work right now. I wasn't being critical of you in any way though mate, not at all, I think the label's pretty good personally. Cheers Roger
  15. Steve, you were quite some mentor in the early days over things like that mate, and for that I thank you!! I tell you what though, I looked through the old Topica archives fairly recently, going back to 2001 and I subsequently had to hire a tractor and tow rope to uncurl my toes after reading some of the stuff I used to post, some of it was funny, but a lot of it . . . . f*ck me I wouldn't even THINK some of that stuff now, let alone post it on a public forum!!!!! We live and learn mate. Eventually. Roger
  16. Look for the kind fonts that have an old 'hot metal' equivalent, ones that would have been used in the 60s and 70s in particular - Engravers, Gothic, Imprint, Didot, Modern (funnily enough! ) - I know these can cost money but equivalents to most of them can be found on blogs or free websites. Arial is quite simply the shittest typeface ever invented, why anyone would ever use it is beyond me. Also by making the type too lined up, structured and uniform can give it too new an appearance, if you look at the old labels, the layout of a lot of the type was very random and rough in a lot of cases. Just a few thoughts, that's all. Roger
  17. It's all good mate, most of us know that. Have you heard the new Jazzanova record? https://www.juno.co.uk/ppps/products/328496-01.htm I reckon you'll like it, and it's on a seven. Roger
  18. He's certainly demolished this one!!! JOKE!!!! Sorry Paul, it's just the usual scenario of words on a screen and a too quick response and all that. Roger
  19. I like the new pastiche designs, I've done a few for Expansion over the years and I think the idea of doing them should be looked on as complimentary, rather than looked on as something derogatory. Got to agree on the typeface issue though (being a typographer I would do!), the choice of font can be all-important to the genuine look of these labels. Roger
  20. Don't talk down to me Paul, there's a good lad. Roger
  21. Ian, what you might want to realise that people clicking on a zshare link cross-posted on various forums doesn't necessarily equate to 530 people actually downloading the track to their computer because they think it's great and thereby creating a 'monster' sound - every single click on a link on that site registers as a 'download' - people more often than not will click on a link simply out of curiosity to hear it, as I did. I'm sure any member of this forum could upload any track along with massively excited hype along the lines of 'best undiscovered 60s northern soul dancer in history' attached to it in a lot of their forum posts and the 'downloads' would be in the hundreds in a short space of time, regardless of who posted it. But that said, ribbing aside and despite my own personal opinion on it, I wish you the very best of success with it mate, seriously. And regarding my top 500 for 2008, I'm not actually going to bother this year, because I've seen the light and now understand that the only worthwhile new releases are those that sound like they were made in the 1960s, I've been wrong all along and now bow down to those far superior to me. Roger
  22. For the crime of raving about Gary Masterblaster I'd put Ian Dewhirst in prison, on Deaf Row.
  23. Are you printing up some certificates for these venues to hang behind the decks? Or badges for OVO DJ's to wear? You could set up your own organisation, Steve, in the way we have to conform to ISO standards at work, and you could recruit OVO Inspectors to go round each venue on a quarterly basis and ask all the DJ's and promoters to fill in forms and problem/complaint reports and file them away to show to the OVO Inspectors when they do their rounds. Could be onto something here don't you think? Look out for stickers being printed up and put in the back window next to the OKEH stickers of cars with tenuous registration plates containing the letters OUL coming to a car park outside a venue near you. Roger
