  3. I think you'll find Clive knows his stuff, Ed, big time, he's been around for a long time, I'm sure Tony Rounce will attest to that (if he reads this thread). Roger
  4. Yes, 'Songs In The Key Of Life' from 1976 is a pile of old tosh, what WAS he thinking about when he wrote that!
  5. Did you know that Duffs from Morecambe is actually his son?
  6. No. Simply because it's not soul music. Funnily enough, I find myself agreeing with this standpoint, a bit of a change I know, but it's right, if I went to a 'modern' event of my choice and a DJ started playing 60s Detroit for example then I wouldn't be too chuffed. It doesn't mean I think 60s Detroit is shit, some of it's quite good, but I wouldn't pay money to go somewhere to hear it, so I can understand what's being said. We live and learn eh?

  8. He is a nice bloke, Joan, a top DJ and certainly has his place in soul scene history, but he is prone to hypocrisy in print and his articles do have a tendency to incense people, I know that from personal experience, I got on the wrong end of him in Manifestering once myself over a response to one of his articles I posted on the EMS forum, or as Sam called it 'the EMS chatline' and he didn't understand that 'Dodger' was merely a screen name for me! Couldn't resist doing this in response: Personall I think it's best to not take things too seriously sometimes, it's only a hobby after all.
  9. Any post that mentions Soul Sam on any forum is usually printed out and given to him by somebody, you can guarantee that.
  10. As good DJ'ing advice as you'll get, that should be the opening paragraph in the 'How to DJ' books. I've always smiled when I've seen DJ's dancing to the 'right' or 'in the know' records - they wouldn't be seen dead, dancing to 'run of the mill' stuff everyone knows, but as soon as a DJ comes on with a rarity they're after, they're up dancing with this 'I know this and you lot don't' look on their faces. I do a bit of DJing but I prefer to embarrass myself behind the decks rather than in front of them.
  11. Thankfully, in the main, no. I do the majority of my sets from CDR's of my own tunes and whilst I get asked constantly what I'm playing as I generally play fairly new stuff for the most part, nobody has ever made an issue of me playing off a CDR, I just tell them what it is and they're generally happy. If format was an issue, I honestly don't think I'd bother DJ'ing at all. Funnily enough though, one time at a weekender I was following a 'big name' and he played a CDR of a track that I'd sent him on mp3 whereas I had the real CD in my playbox ready to play!! Oooooh, I were right mad I were!! Actually I wasn't, I had a laugh with him about it and just chose another one to play.
  12. Sod off or I'll set our mutual enemy on you!! In all seriousness though Dave, I find this whole scenario quite intriguing, how people who basically all share the love of the same music in its various guises, can be so divided and have such polar opposite views on some of the aspects surrounding it all. For instance, why do I, as a lifelong collector of original vinyl LPs and singles, not care about the format when it comes to DJ'ing, yet others who are also lifelong collectors of original vinyl, find the thought of not playing originals whilst DJ'ing so abhorrent that they feel the need to dish out abuse to those who don't follow their way of thinking? Nowt so strange as folk eh mate?
  13. Here's a thought: Why don't rare soul or OVO promoters simply drop the 'Northern Soul' tag altogether from their venues and tag it a 'Rare Soul' event, and leave the Northern Soul tag to the events that play the 'Top 500' tracks or these so called 'local' events where format isn't such an issue. Surely if you split them like that and advertise them as such, after a while people will learn what to expect and there won't be any confusion or the obvious upset that this issue causes some people? Or is that total bollocks and even more confusing than things are already?
  14. Were you asking 'why buy vinyl at all' question only in relation to DJ'ing?
  15. Are you GENUINELY that short-sighted that you have to ask such a ridiculous question?
  16. Usually anything that Soul Sam deems worthy of a play.

  18. https://www.traxsource.com/index.php?act=sh...es&cv=28226 Not sure if it's got a vinyl release but it sounds to me like it might appeal to those with mod and funk leanings. Roger
  19. Generally DJ's who do it for the money only, so that would rule out 99% of DJ's on the soul scene. I thought I'd give DJ'ing in bars a go, about 5 or 6 years ago, so I bought a load of commercial tunes, mainly the shitty MTV r&b type things, because I knew that's what would be required, but I HATED doing it, not just because of having to put up with the brainless pissed up dickheads and arrogant bouncers strutting around the place, but mainly because I couldn't hack playing music I didn't like, having only DJ'd on the soul scene playing music I loved to people who in the main felt the same way. The majority are collectors first and DJ's second, anyone can stand behind a set of decks playing music, anyone, but it does take a degree of talent to be a GOOD DJ, rather than just having a good collection to draw on. Imvho of course.
  20. I've got a brass plate outside our house next to our front door with our house number on it. I think I'll probably smile to myself every I pass it now.
