Where Have All The Modern Rooms Gone?
Roger Williams replied to ImberBoy's topic in All About the SOUL
I've actually explained it twice in my posts Simon if you read back. But just to make it clear, my view is that if a DJ prefers to play his/her music from vinyl (i.e. northern soul ethos to my mind) then he/she is more than likely going to miss the quality new release music that's only put out on CD, so therefore depriving the scene of hearing quality new releases purely down to the DJ's preference on the format on which it's released. I'm not for one second saying that to have a vinyl preference is wrong, but if a DJ's preferential format is restricting what gets played on a modern scene in 2010 and great new music isn't being heard because of it, then I see that as detrimental to the scene as a whole. Absolutely wasn't implying it was a very bad thing Cliff, not in the slightest, your perception of what I said is way off mate - my only point was that in my personal experience over the last 15 years DJ'ing on the modern soul scene, for a high percentage of DJs who have their roots in the northern scene, vinyl still appears to be their preference when it comes to playing music at venues, so because of that many of them will miss and consequently not play a lot of the superb contemporary soul music that is only released on CD, that's all I was saying, it wasn't a personal criticism of anyone who has their roots in the northern soul scene, I just see it as a part of the northern soul ethos that actually has a detrimental effect on the modern soul scene music-wise. You quote Colin's name, but him, and a few others like yourself and DJ's like Bob Hinsley and Baz Maleady for example, are the exceptions to the rule in my experience, because you embrace your northern soul roots but you don't let it shackle you in terms of what you accept and buy and play at venues, which is the way it should be. And I tell you, if every northern or modern soul DJ today had Colin Curtis's outlook and ethos, the whole scene would be far healthier music wise, there's no doubt in my mind about that whatsoever. Because people would stand there with a long face and their arms folded for a large chunk of the night saying how crap the music was that wasn't to their taste. -
Where Have All The Modern Rooms Gone?
Roger Williams replied to ImberBoy's topic in All About the SOUL
One of the most sensible posts I've read on here for ages, absolutely right. Putting northern and modern rooms in the same venues over the years has polluted the modern soul scene with some northern soul attitudes that do a truly modern soul scene no favours at all, the worst one being the vinyl/CD thing especially given that the vast majority of the best contemporary modern soul tracks haven't seen a release on vinyl so have been ignored by so many DJs who come from the northern scene who try their hand at DJ'ing on the modern soul scene, which is actually quite a high percentage these days. I'm not trying to stir up this format argument, but when it's actually derogatory to a natural progression of the music which gets played, or in this case doesn't get played, then it does it more harm than good, and my belief is actually that if there were no such thing as CDs and absolutely everything released still came out on vinyl, people from the northern soul scene in general would be far more accepting and less dismissive of new releases because they'd get to hear far more than they do now due to the format issue that is still so inherent with so many people, particularly DJs. How the fkuc I've lived without Leslie Drayton 'When Will You Be Mine' for all these years, what a TUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Top tune out of all the swaps for me so far, fan-fookin'-tastic, surely this would pack a northern soul dancefloor wouldn't it (unless it already does)? Proper awesome piece of feelgood soul music to my ears. Is that on an LP, Dave? Got to get myself one of these mate, nice one. Regarding my own CDs, got them all sorted complete with posh cover and everything, put them in my rucksack to take to work to post at lunchtime yesterday and like a twat I knocked a cup of coffee onto my bag and ruined 75% of the covers, so I'll re-do them over the Easter break and get them all out early next week. Sorry Paul, more mis-use of terminology!!

Cheers Mart, but I didn't really take what Paul said as an affront to me, neither did I intend my own post to be an affront to people like Paul who I've no doubt, especially after reading his reply, that what drives him is his passion for the music - I also think PaulB's initial posted showed that he was somebody with a genuine passion for the music, which I agree is how it should be for everyone. What I said was really a generalised statement based on the vast number of times over the years I've seen DJ's being popped at by what I always think is somebody basically saying 'why is he up there DJ'ing when I've got all the records so it should be me' so probably my use of the word 'wannabee' was misleading as it appeared all-encompassing and it honestly wasn't intended as a sleight on anyone who is genuinely passionate about the music, least of all Paul. I just believe that a lot of 'name' DJ's are sometimes unfairly criticised for having to play sets to please the majority, and having DJ'd at big weekenders in prime timeslots on the modern side of things, I know the frustration of having to play big crowd pleasing tunes that in truth as a lover of soul music I'd rather not hear again in my life ever, I'd far rather play music I want to play to a crowd of people who have the same passion for it as I do, but at these big events these days it's just not going to happen, on either the northern or the modern scene, and I'm certain it must be the same for the 'name' northern DJ's. In terms of Paul's replies, there are parallels between the northern and modern scenes, with 'name' DJ's who have immense collections, yet choose the play same set time after time after time after time. I actually feel very much on the same side as Paul in terms of genuine passion for playing and chasing and being excited by fresh music, be it northern for him, and the new stuff for me, but as a DJ in this day and age, you really do have to balance it out with a degree of realism as to who you're playing to, but other than that I agree with just about everything he's said. Yep, big up Mister Guarnori, the real deal, top man. But I notice Richard must have been a late developer in terms of his height or Sam's shrunk quite a bit over the years?
-
I'd hazard a guess that the majority of 'big name' DJ's would love to play the smaller rooms now and again to show they aren't the one-trick ponies that they sometimes get slated for being, I bet they could knock spots off the majority of the vocal wannabee's who like to have a go at them, without even having to try.

Gary, I don't think Brett knows who you are on here, can you let him know your real name mate.

If I think of 'crossover', Gene Middleton 'No One To Love Me' on Funk Factory is always without fail the first record that springs to mind: Love it.

I thought it was all called 'Tent Music' now anyway?

Does it actually mean the same these days as when it was first coined/used?

This character takes the piss big time as well: https://shop.ebay.co....id=p3911.c0.m14 £600 for a Cool Notes CD!!!

The Jimmy Jules is superb as well, as are the Taste, Derwin Daniels and Ladee Luv tracks. And on Brett's CD I'd forgotten how good the Little Anthony cut was as well, that was a serious return to form for him, in fact one of the best things I've ever heard from him. Good start gents, it has to be said. Should be able to despatch my effort on Monday, all being well. Roger

Been playing Lars' CD in the car today to and from work, at lot on there I didn't know, not a bad track on it, but Toast 'It's Just An Illusion' and The Reason Why 'Step Into My World' are absolutely outstanding pieces of music. I presume they're 45's, or would they be LP tracks with any any luck (seeing as I don't collect 45's)? Roger

Brett, thanks for the Mondo Grosso version of Family mate, I wasn't aware they'd covered that, love it. Roger
