  1. think that people who class themselves as devotees of northern soul wouldn't agree about not going outside the top 500 . for a start define the top 500 and I can guarantee if say they knew or could name 500 tracks they would all have a different top 500 , think people on here need to realise theres a lot of difference between people who just attend local soul nites to dance round their handbags and people who do go out to different venues and travel to hear the music and have a dance with like minded folk .whether that be oldies or any other genre of this music ,in other words be a little less critical of what others do or want and providing it doesn't stop you from doing what you want then leave them to it .. regards B
  2. well said len that's my feelings as well people will accept something new or different if its good ,
  3. but back in the day you had to travel there wasn't the plethora of venues that there are today two do,s on every Friday and Saturday at least here in south Yorkshire , back then necessity was the mother of invention today its Tesco express theres one just around every corner .
  4. sometimes when I am out a dj puts on a series of sounds which gets the place bouncing and you wonder what is going to be played next, does this resonate with dj,s when they have the floor and then what do they play next , a lazy record ie an oldie floor packer or something else ,
  5. pray may I ask to what and whom do you refer
  6. please sir me me me
  7. your spot on matebut we then go into that well trodden path wrt wannabee dj,s its easy to become dedicated and dj spend loads of dosh on a box of contemporary hits and get yourself some gear and a venue invite ya mates and those who,s venue you wanna dj at to dj at yours , mix them all up and hope for the best . yes tooooooo many djs specially lazy ones who don't care for the music but crave the kudos
  8. chalky records were hammered to death back in the day sometimes played several times a night so nowt new there then , but yes they were overplayed and put in the not needed box only to be rediscovered its a continuos process . what goes round comes round , and long may it continue. so I take it you would ban returnees ORIGINAL SOULIES CONTINOUS ATTENDERS REQUIRED AKA OSCAR perhaps somebody will form a club and give out Oscars lol
  9. so does this mean a good record becomes a bad record because it becomes popular are we into the throwaway lifestyle on the soul scene , buy a nice top from primark for a fiver wear it once and sling it and buy something else for the next night out
  10. and I suppose this thread will make a difference , people will choose what they like and want to do despite what is said on here , and from what I see and experience the oldies scene is doing very well but it will eventually die out and the rare/modern and other genres will catrry on under ground where the oldies will come back into it . unfortunately those who were in it from the start are getting thin on the ground and all of us who got on the bus in the intervening years are getting old , so is calvin lee the future .
  11. will probably hear this at the Grovenor tonight , always gets them on the floor
  12. not my cup of tea wouldn't be looking for this
  13. thank you for your appraisal of my boss tune which was played at the very end of a great night of great music not all stompers not all oldies but I don't really differentiate nowadays I tend to class sounds as those I dance to , those I don't dance to and those I don't care for, end of and probably couldn't name many of any of the so called mentioned types , but hey ho I can live with that .
  14. if only its not a question of having or not having taste people have varying tastes, I wouldn't presume to say some people have no taste . that to me would be tasteless
  15. apologise for the strong language used yesterday no excuse but mad Friday afternoon and nite contributed some what, everyone has a right to their views within reason , some people are more passionate about things wrt our scene and long may it continue , me I grew up with this music and everything was wonderfull and new as a callow youth in the late sixties but Im a lot older now and have an onboard filtering system that chooses my music its called experience and it doesn't let me down when deciding good or bad records but it is subjective , merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year to all soulies every where . heres my boss tune from last night at the trades , https://youtu.be/OrYIJpmEp3Y
  16. hey ho thanks for attributing me to the so called nostalgia scene but like I said don't pigeon hole me , you don't know me and though I personally don't do the vests and baggies thing ,I will defend their right to do so , I find some of the responces on here a tad offensive and no wonder people no longer frequent this site when such elitist claptrap is posted , its a music scene for gods sake , its not life and death , the only real tradgedy is that a lot of the people who really matter,, the artists and musicians got very little reward for giving us the music
  17. off now to a long established soul venue in Barnsley for the Christmas bash run by the venerable Mr Greenhough and his sidekick deano who I can guarantee will play an eclectic mix of music some of which I wont have heard before and somme I wont want to hear again lol. back out for round 2
  18. wtf, we are talking about the oldies brigade not the venues you mentioned here , please don't pigeon hole me because I like what I like and deffo don't care for a lot of what is deemed by some has more upfront music , its a subjective thing isn't it , but I refuse to believe that the great unwashed who attend soul nites and even niters are mentality retarded because they also like what they like.
  19. merry Christmas and a happy new year to all the soul source team long may it prosper, same for all soulies wherever you are . from Angie AND Brian xxx cant get any emoticons lol
  20. al Williams for one chalky but got things to do and its mad Friday off out with the lads
  21. think people are being a tad negative about the oldies brigade I have been going to some east midlands events for over 10 years now and the music played back then has changed and if we had the playlists from back then and compare with the same or similar venues today you would be surprised at the difference , this scene does evolve but a lot slower than { the more upfront } venues , maybe its just that some dj,s want the opportunity to dick wave and play their expensive new tunes and be worshipped for doing so or dealers wanting to push new stock but I cant see whats wrong with what is by far is the majority of people in this scene do , namely go out in their numbers every w/end and listen and dance to the music they love ,,
