noticed a distinct absence of baggy trousers and circle skirts in the fillum , but they never wore them back then .

got to agree kev but would you go to a venue with sky high beer (drink) prices and the drinks were crap and undrinkable which is unfortunately true at some of these venues which don't open every night or every w/end even and beer is allowed to go stale . once bought a bottle of diet coke and it was 2 years out of date ffs .

there was a free night on in Rotherham Friday run by a well established dj and promoter

C4 Paul Mason Asks - Will Northern Soul The Movie Spark A
barney replied to Mike's topic in All About the SOUL
yes but from my standpoint as a scooterist, quad has a had a greater impact on the scootering scene than it did for the mod scene, comedy mods like the ones seen annually at the isle of wight or brighton are despised by the regular scooterists and scootering is thriving up and down the country ,. yes they did use northern scooterboys my mate martin scully was in the film and they used fur and dodgy fly screens to cover up the square healights of the gp,s which weren't made till the 70s -
went to eggboro last night £2 entry although got a free pass last night (thanks Julie) modern reasonably sized main room and a side room for the shufflers , £2.50 for a pint of john smiths , great dancefloor which was full all night. the sound system is ok and full of good people ,. 70 mile round trip so not exactly on doorstep but well worth it ,. could have gone to several more local venues but went there because one of our mates was guesting plus two other excellent dj,s who played great eclectic sets of quality music and had a few goes at making shapes on the floor myself ,. free entry soul nights run by soulies with a vinyl only policy .are nothing new round here , landlords /club owners have cottoned on round our way that it attracts a reasonable crowd , not my cup of tea but hey ho its there .have a look in events ,.

have not been to an allniter for years but can agree that this is going to cost more ,but there are loads of free entry events run by genuine soulies where the owners of these venues are quite happy to pay the dj,s/promoters and are happy with the increased bar takings , so how does this square with those venues at the other end of the spectrum , don't think comparisons with town centre nightclubs are relevant most soulies I know wouldn't dream of going to such places,.

many,s the time on our travels when we get to the door of a venue with a tenner in my mitts for missis and myself and I have uttered the dreaded Yorkshire war cry AR MUCH ,and then this is usually compounded by sky high bar prices and you need the equivalent of the weekly 40 hours minimum wage to enjoy a night out , Would like to ask what peoples views are concerning door tariffs and bar prices ? its usually the more of what I consider the more commercial bigger venues that tend to be pricey but are they value for money . there are a couple of high tariff venues not far from me and loads over the hills in injun country (lancs),. the owners of these establishments not only want a cut of the door takings but also charge to me exhorbitant drinks prices of usually dubious quality beers ,lagers and disgusting dispensed soft drinks . I have come to the conclusion that I no longer want to go to these places, because there are much cheaper venues playing equally or better quality music and the promoters of these are much friendlier and more accessible . for instance went to a local venue near me last night £4 in, cheap bar ,change from a fiver for 2 drinks , run by people who have been on the scene for years who operate a strict OVO policy, playing crackin genuine across the board sounds , whats your take on this folks ,. regards B

Quadrophenia kicked off a massive resurgence in the scootering world and a lot of todays scooterists are post quad afficionadoes , the mod thing was part of quad but the lasting legacy was scooterings ,. and if this film is as good as they are making out then maybe it will turn out to be a massive boost for the ageing soul scene and the clothes thing will just be a passing phase ,. -

looking forward to seeing this film and going to watch it with an open mind , watched soul boy when it came out and to be honest that was dire , hope and from what I have read this is an entirely different kettle of fish and a more indicative version of events 40 years ago when I first got into what was to be called northern soul . Soul Boy contributed very little to todays scene , it wasn't a ground breaker like say quadrophenia was for the scooter scene . So lets hope this new film as a similar effect on todays soul scene and brings in loads of new enthusiastic fresh faces to carry on from where us tired old burnt out soulies are at today ,. if I could put smileys on I would . ps on another note went to watch the film Pride the other night about a group of gays and lesbians from London who tried to help a south wales mining community during the great strike in 84/85 . its excellent viewing and British cinema at its best ,.

well they would be wont they , because the maxim if you cant say anything nice say nowt rules ok , and woe betide anyone who names and shames or critisices any thing ,.
-
the problem with this ,is that the promoters of the big events (nighters w/ends/soulweeks abroad) and a lot of the so-called top dj,s are in rival camps and even someone like Henry Kissenger couldn't get them to agree ,. so what you would end up with as happened in the past ,would be tribal warfare with the addition of the world wide web on a global basis ,. and two or three big events all on the same night , slugging it out
-
cheers Russ kinda thought you would be out there somewhere from past posts ,. hence the quote ,. keep safe and KTF

quick answer YES can anything be done about it NO . there are too many wannabee dj,s and also a lot of people who see it has making a few quid and don't really care about the scene in general ,. -
well Im firmly in the classic oldies camp , only go to regular venues now unless have heard about a venue by word of mouth that plays decent sets ,if I want to listen to alternative sounds then I go online or listen to some of the many soul radio shows , but for me in the main ,the music that I grew up with , danced to and loved in the late 60,s and early 70,s is what I want to hear ,and don't think it can be bettered ,. have been into the music since the late 60s and probably just the same as most people who have been on the scene for a long time have developed a fine tuned filtering system which registers what is good ,bad or indifferent and most of the music played at oldies venues does it for me

go on then , you can have your claim to Northern Soul , your just as bad as them soft southern shandy swilling nancy boys from Nottingham ,who claim Robin Hood was from there , but every man and his dog knows he was a true northerner from gods county Yorkshire ,. I mean cant have us thick northern puddings doing owt reight can we ffs
-
A gentleman and a Soul man passed this way, there will always a corner of the dance floor where we expect you to be, gone but never forgoten!!!! after a long illness Clive Johnson passed away this w/end .
-
oh dear Mark one of the biggest mistakes you will ever make is to mock the dj ,. this is soul source not face book , we take things seriously on here and sycophancy rules ok as far as certain dj,s go ,. cant get any smiley faces up : ) so this will after do

remember a heated exchange of views on here some years ago and people having a go at the then young alex , well I have known alex for a long time and said back then , he was one of the nicest and politest young man I had ever known and it is still true , and he is a crackin dj , and there are a good few youngens like him and some cracking female dj,s but they aren't going to get the spots because the old boy you play at mine then I can play at yours network rules ok and the fat old balding hegemony want to keep it like this because theres money to be had ,
