  1. always say white rabbits first thing on the first day of every month if you dont get it there,s not much point explaining
  2. btw white rabbits to the prawn sandwich and latte soulies, apologies never you go to your theatres of dreams and listen n shuffle to your parody of the beautifull sound for me its pie n bovril forever
  3. the passion and commitment would be something to attribute to the artists to me what you are sayin no matter what record is being played at the said venues the dance floor is always full
  4. unlike yourself I wouldnt dream of stating I am right tis just my opinion right or wrong
  5. dont really get your point your version of things certainly doesnt square with me back in the late 60s we used to go to local youth clubs church halls welfares and listen and dance to contemporary music and some oldies,, then the motown and stax records came to the fore and these were getting played more and more the scene didnt just pop up overnight and older lads in our village went to stoke and other exotic places and brought back different sounds and these were in constant demand from the punters and so on thru the wheel ,wigan where the more enterprising dj,s at these venues sought out the sounds yes back then we had celebrity dj,s but what about the artists today as your post reads we have the cult of the dj (who as invested a significant sum in records) and as you say no matter of the quality of the music because a big name dj plays it at one of the clubs you mention it guarantees a full dancefloor, discernin soul music punter or sycophancy you tell me
  6. thanks steve great post
  7. ok russ can agree with you up to a point , but can I ask why do you say fancy dress you state am passionate about my soul music and will defend the real scene to the end and I am right who says you are right so the many 100,s if not 1000,s who go to classic oldies nights every week are wrong and not real you say I wanna still feel the excitement of hearing a record played out for the first time etc does this apply to all records heard for the first time or have you some discretion
  8. ok at a recent well known soul venue not in yorks or notts asked a well known n/west dj reknowned for his rare and underplayed music to play baby by ellie greenwich he had never heard of it wont embarass him on here but
  9. will clear this point up when I says newys I also mean the latest rediscovery as well for my sins am in injun country next saturday the monaco ballroom please dont say thats a crap oldies venue as well
  10. chalky I do go to different venues and go into the rare and underplayed rooms and for me a lot of the music played doesnt do it for me and am not going to namedrop but hear certain dj,s go on about a track describing it as the latest monster blah blah went down a bomb at blah blah and then they play it and angie and me look at each other and my close friends say wot the f**k is this and its dire , now and again we hear new sounds and yes we like them, though we havent met chalky I have quite a few friends who dj and some are well known and they will tell me about a track or play it and sometimes one can telll right away if its ok, but am sorry the constant quest for new sounds is diluting the essence of what I consider northern soul. and with the armies of dj,s out there all competing to have the latest newy this in my opinion is putting quantity before quality and its not the punters who are the main consideration but the competition between dj,s , and venues to play these records as for the clothes each to their own but think the baggys uniform looks great on some and like to see it at venues and the people who wear it are no different from me or you.. talk to them they are really friendly
  11. thanks for your reasonably considered much understated post my friend maybe thats why some of us dont want to move on and turn into spitefull foul mouthed fundamentalists
  12. thanks for your tongue in cheek post but the venue I attended last night in n/notts maybe one of your soul nights but people in uniform or normal were prepared to travel from peterborough stockport goole barnsley no chance of doing that on shank,s pony
  13. andy been tryin to count the number of different venues Ive been to this year and its plus 30 including w/enders and a weekat lanzorote soul in the sun lol (not after braggin rights) so think am able to contribute and yes have been to busy upfront venues where I have not paticularlly liked the music but still enjoyed the night; have stated before stopped doing niters because of the music policies and anyway like to keep compus mentis at w/ends to indulge my other passion scootering . yes as you say each to their own but some people take this fookin seriously
  14. ok chalky I have a confession to make , personnally dont wear bags . thought I looked silly in them first time round. but what gets me is people who sneer at them and by implication the people who wear them. yes your right its the music but the clothes make it easily identifiable nowt wrong with that in my opinion, and went to a venue last night where there were as many wearing this uniform (for want of a better word) as there were people dressed normally,,and it was packed solid and informed it is full every month.. aint getting into no arguements about naming and shaming venues but will make this observation , travel up and down yorks and notts to venues occasionally going over the hills into injun country (lancs) and mainly to venues that play classic oldies; when I have attended a venue with an upfront /progressive music policy have noticed a lack of numbers and also have recentley noticed on here one or two venues changing from a.t.b back to oldies, and believe that is going to be a growing trend. modern/progressive is not wearing and the limp insipid mid tempo stuff that is being played at some venues will never cut the mustard as far a I,m concerned ktf barney
  15. they may look daft to some but its something that makes n/soul stand out and if you had been to kingsway hall last night and seen some youngens who are really into it maybe you would change your mind why dress like everyone else why become mainstream the bags the towels and holdalls are part and parcel of the scene if you want normal why not just go to any town centre club and listen and dance to whats on offer , some of the more upfront venues play town centre disco/funk anyway
  16. quite few youngens into the scene round our way (teens and early 20s)and seeing more every month but if you want them to really get into the scene take them to places like the kingsway hall forrest town 100% northern soul , clothes ,music , friendly people and atmosphere , no diverging into other genres of music , its classic proper northern soul
