TWO THINGS THAT ARE KILLING THE SOUL SCENE
barney replied to Speedlimit's topic in All About the SOUL
just done a seaside w/ender with some so called top dj,s similar line up to previous years and think its getting a bit stale , same dj,s mainly promoters same playlists Friday and Saturday ,quite a few repeats and not much in the way of good but underplayed.. the ,emphasis on the stompers , went home on the sunday , don't do stats but would like to know the number of sounds played over the w/end the number of times certain tracks were played each night .ie the same track played fri ,sat and sunday and the nightly repeats . there seems to be a lack of conviction and imagination among dj.s who should know better , and even if it only considers the so called top 500 theres quite a few crackin sounds on the periphery that don't get but should be played , this to me is whats going to kill it , complacency ,lack of imagination and plain laziness , -
Jeanette - Wade Flemons on Ramsel records could have got this for 10 bob and a spuggies egg a few years ago .

Racism at NS venues; did/does it happen
barney replied to Ady Croasdell's topic in All About the SOUL
same here don't know if it was at the same venue but a number of girls heard a racist diatribe from a drug fuelled white women in the toilets and the said vile person was taken to one side and soon left the venue , -
I think upfront is used to describe a venue that plays more than the current top 500

wear what you like mate mentioned the jeans to say you were not wearing this new retro style clobber , nowt wrong with jeans in fact anyone can wear what they like just think those back pocket flaps are a bit too much.we go to loads of different venues locally and further afield, its the first time I have seen them but still ,you pays your money etc its a free world .
-
went to a local venue last night and there were a guy in jeans and two women one wearing a circle skirt and the other baggy trousers with those naff chequered back pocket flaps , who have obviously seen the ad bought the cd and the clobber and ventured out to give it a whirl ,. then there was the young couple seen these two out for the first time last week who have probably seen the film bought the DVD and CD and decided to give it a go but soon got fed up with the northern style and reverted to strictly type salsa routine ,. Bless em .

The Story Of A Record Collection.. Lost And Found
barney replied to Little-stevie's topic in All About the SOUL
you couldn't make this up. brilliant . its nice to see some decency in this sad old world -
why not have the northern dance off . well known top djs have to play a 5 track set behind a screen ie not be able to be seen by the punters and the name of the game is to see who keeps the floor and gets the most people up dancing .

After 40 odd years most of us have ossified and our receptors are finely tuned to certain sounds , we can easily discern what we think is good and the opposite of this , I certainly don't need anyone telling me what's good or what I should like . At my time in life I am happy with what I like and certainly don't get fed up of hearing it , yes the odd new tune does get through but not the quantities that were discovered back in the day , so for those of you on a mission to find the holy grail I say carry on ,but in your quest don't try and make me think I am missing something or not with it,.
-
are there any qualifications or courses on offer to be a northern soul dj , surely someone should have come up with something by now because from what I see looking up from the floor most djs look to be well past their sell by dates

How Big Was The Northern Soul Scene In The 70S ?
barney replied to arnie j's topic in All About the SOUL
it depends what you call on the scene , there are many if not hundreds of venues every w/end . soulnites , niters , w/enders and weeks abroad . at a guess less than 50% are really into the scene they just go to their local soul night once a month and have the craic with like minded mates and the odd dance ,then there are those that only do niters and those that do the rare or modern and wouldn't be seen dead at a local bash , we travel to various venues every w/end around Yorkshire the east midlands and sometimes into injun country (lancs)we are into the classic oldies but like the odd rare /newey etc thrown in . would say we are into the scene. and finally theres the post millennium retro baggy crowd who are trying to emulate what we had in the late 60s and 70s . will say its bigger than its ever been now but its not the same . and it will evolve into something different in a few years time , -

Chalky lets not kid ourselves , the people or conglomerate who make shredded wotsits have probably never heard of soul source and don't or wont give a toss what a handful of old duffers(in the main) think or type on this site .as for whats been put on farce book that's probably a different matter , agree on all you say , at the end of the day we are a music and dance scene (one of many) we think we are special and we believe (I do anyroadsart) that ours is the best ,. its been with some of us for a long time , but its just that , for me and most of my friends its what we do every w/end go out , meet up with great people ,listen and dance to fantastic music , its not life and death but my life would be a lot less poorer without it .

,well the genies been out of the bottle since the 70,s with regard to commercialisation, same as how could we class something as underground when its most popular venue was voted best disco in the world (disco ffs) back then , and folk have been making money out of the scene ever since it started , lets not get hoity toity about this , some dj,s would suck knob and probably have done to get a spot at certain well known venues , the amount of crap that has been espoused since this tv advert was shown is unbelievable . comments like the above and its not the worst just make me cringe , the scene don't belong to anybody and anybody can play a part in it , theres no entrance exam or qualification , theres no difference from a first timer to a seasoned vet when your on the scene ,we just want everyone to be respectfull end of, as for the je suis posters I have seen . this is really trivialising and demeaning , how the fook can people equate what happened in france to a guy who has been critised for playing a part in a tv ad ,if the guy who was in the ad did it in the belief that he would get no stick from the keyboard warriors on here and elsewhere ,then he must be very nieve or as thick as a gurhkas foreskin .
