wished I had owned this one

way back in the early 70s I used to collect flat black plastic discs because the sounds they produced really moved me and became obsessed by this and I didnt really have a clue being a callow niave youth what was, and what was not original but didnt give a fook as long as they produced the desired sound , this all ceased when the prices started to rocket and no way was I prepared to pay more than 30 bob for a record, so I started collectin scooters lambrettas , vespas you name it , but then the missus put her foot down and said no more, so I turned my attentions to locomotive nameplates , expensive yes but these are fairly unique and usually not more than two of each type are ever produced , but apart from polishin them what else could I do with em, anyway in the end I flogged em all (5) and made a tidy profit, have still got 3 scooters and not only can I polish these I ride em as well, as for the black plastic discs lost most to divorce and gave rest away , still love the music though and go to soul do,s , w/enders but prefer to listen and shuffle to the music and dont really care much about the ovo thing, have loads of shiny silver smaller plastic dics though and a laptop full to burstin wi great sounds and it hasnt really cost me much, am I doing this wrong

got to agree this is one miserable song that does my napper in. its surely ought to have been flogged off years ago , in fact it should be condemned and demolished ffs

unfortunately this is the future none of us blokes will dare go out in case they say something that isnt quite PC and end up losing their jobs and be pilloried by the media

think polotics is just a euphemism for a number of things and the music is secondary jealousy and avarice are usually the driving forces behind most of the polotics and that old chestnut location and timing

but thats the point tony why endure the same old ,same old, and wet dreary, w/ends at home,, for what to me is a worthwhile w/end away listening and dancing to our music with likeminded people, and aquiring new friends from different parts of the country ,beats allniters handsdown for me wish I could afford to go to them all cheers b:hatsoff2:

bit off topic but how about this for an idea why doesnt someone promote a venue and offer dj spots to potential djs who are willing to pay to play, could be a nice little earner for a promoter and could make or break some wannabee dj,s , b

dont think the sort of soul nights you are on about ie. those that play off a laptops or cds and in the main are pubs / bars and play the more commercial sounds that promote on here , and if they do then they would probably get panned on here . was asked to dj the other week at a charity do in my local town at a place called the soul lounge where the resident dj plays from a laptop and has one of these dj programmes with thousands of tracks on it , but no decks , dont dj myself but got my mate to come with his decks and he played , the event went down well and along with 2 local soul bands playing covers raised a few hundred quid for charity , this would never have appeared on here and there are many more venues jumping on the bandwagon regardless of what is said on here .

morals and taste , who made you the font of all things northern , your just miffed coz you didnt get asked at the begining how very very dare they , so you have wrote a play , havent seen it myself so wont comment but to demand that something should not be funded because you deem it an insult beggars belief , then come on here and pontificate when you havent seen the end result , my god as rigsby would say,,you make ian levine likeable oops youve seen, it still think your a pumped up egotist who thinks he is an artist its in the eye of the beholder

ok will try to sum it up in a different way as a mere mortal and part of the great unwashed dont promote or dj or fook all really just want to have a good time whatever and be happy northern soul is a passive thing as far as Im concerned I just turn up at an event I want to go to, and listen and dance to the music which is provided for me by dj,s and usually have a great time doing so, and do so almost every w/end. scootering is totally different , getting from A to B on something which was designed to only get you to the local pasta supermarket involves a lot of trepidation and a sense of achievment when you get there, and the time and effort in keepin your scoot going and being among likeminded people with the same problems and difficulties is very rewarding , much more effort imho is required in scootering and the ability to face adversity when things go wrong as they often do and the satisfaction when you or some kind scooterist repairs your scoot and gets you away is so rewarding . and if I had to choose between my records or my scoots , its a no brainer , I dont have any records , and would sooner part with the wife than my lambrettas:D one can exist in the northern scene without owning overpriced vinyl discs but in the scootering scene your fooked if you dont have a scooter:hatsoff2:

unfortunately racism casts its evil shadow everywhere in our society and am sure you are aware of that stevie and a small minority of racists are still in the scooter scene but nowhere as bad now as it was back then , but surely you shouldnt be prevented from doing something you want to do because of this , the majority of scooterists are decent folk and welcome anyone into the scooter scene ,

I was at the IOW this year its my 4th year on the trot and its brilliant , avoid the main venues for most of the reasons stated , last year went to an hotel where some of the midlands lads were staying and they put on their own soul night and it was great a bit of everything didnt hear the snake though , they couldnt do it this year but will be there next year and so will I Yes you do get a lot of pissheads on the scooter scene but their are a lot of people into it, who come on here imberboy for one and he will listen and dance to owt , rare ,modern , r&b you name it IOW for me is a refreshing change where you meet people from all over the country and abroad they definately aint soul snobs like some who come on here and pontificate about something they know f all about

suppose it can be ok for a dj to play to himself provided what he plays is in tune with the punters but any good dj will or should know what the punters will accept or dance to at the event at which he or she is to dj at. for me the worst thing a dj can do is to play is spot and disregard the punters and indulge in his or hers own collection, I go out to listen and dance to the music and if the music is ok then fair enough but if the dj has tumbleweed rolling across the dancefloor then they should do something about it , either play to the punters or get down and let someone else do the job cheers b

an admirable stance chalky dont think things will change though some big name dj,s regularly do more than one venue per night

its a nothern thing kev,there are so many events round my way that they are bound to clash , but people want their time in the sun , events /venues come and go but by and large we ie the punters just get on with it , friendship and loyalty used to be a big thing in our scene but nowadays there,s money to be made even if its only 15 or 20 quid for dj,ng which goes towards financing your night out and times are hard a lot of us on here have been there ,seen it heard it and now in our dotage just want the quiet life and to be able to go out and have a good night without the travel bit and the dodgy venues bit and am afraid we have become set in our ways . such is life, thankfully there are still people in the scene who are willing to go places, hear new sounds and offer them up for our enjoyment, and long may it continue , KTF b

whoa we have had this before where certain promoters told certain dj,s if they played at a,n,others venue then they would never play for them again, smacks of bullying to me, although I would like to think that most dj,s and for that matter promoters are honourable and decent, who decides who the respectable promoters are , because in no time it would become a clique , and the old boy network would prevail even more than it does now, what chance then for good up and coming dj,s. great in theory piss poor in practice comes to mind unfortunately

yes in a perfect world it would be great if all promoters got together and agreed to cooperate on events , unfortunately this is never going to be happen , this is a story of biblical proportions and ever since the first soul night ,people have fallen out and gone there own way , throughout the history of the soul scene there have been schisms and this has led to different factions doing there own thing despite what is going on elsewhere within the scene. its obvious that some promoters are feeling the pinch and state the reason for this is too many events ,dates clashing etc. maybe they should take a hard look at themselves and their event and do some assesments, is what they are offering what the punters want is the venue fit for purpose is the sound system up to scratch is the door tariff fair are the bar prices reasonable , and is the bar offering what the punters want is the location right is the dj line up ok could go on , but at the end of the day we are where we are now and we cant wind the clock back. there are too many opposing factions and too much bad blood and a lot at stake especially for the promoters for which this is their livelyhood. so lets not wish for utopia , the punters of which I am one will vote with their feet and choose as they wish and for me more events means more choice its a buyers market in todays world whether we like it or not

think the latter part highlighted is spot on and couldnt agree more, we are children of our time , motown probably influenced us and led most of us into NS and we are still here. think there would have been a soul scene without motown but very much different and smaller and possibly over with by now as a mass movement,

am going to write a letter of complaint to berry gordy because its down to him that we have to put up with webbydublin (phil) on here,
