  1. only interested in genuine answers about the history of OVO deffo not a debate about the merits of Ovo. when did it become common practice to have ovo events?. who first used OVO in their flyers and when? ,. is it a 70s 80s 90s or 21st century phenomenom.?
  2. When did the term original vinyl only originate ias the playing policy for soul events .. which was the first venue to advocate this policy .

    Irony

have edited out my previous posts on this thread to enable discussion to continue on the irony of the thread and not on my posts

    Irony

maybe we should shun the purveyors of bootleg records then and any reputable dealer should not have anything to do with them ,

  7. come on chaps give it a chance we cant get stuck now ,,we have to move on
  8. the majority of folk on the soul scene dont come on here and if they do its for the events guide .. there always will be the usual suspects on here and its a small dwindling band ps bring back webbo
  9. think the days of someone going over to the states and rummaging round in some backstreet store/ warehouse / studio and finding a mint copy of an unknown never heard or played before monster northern soul hit have long gone . maybe from some studio master tape by some enterprising employee but not joe or jan punter , best we can look forward to are new music ,new covers , remixes which will all be found on this medium the internet
  10. gentlemen we are moving off topic this is about youngsters and the future . do we want the scene to die out with us the present middle aged keepers of the faith or do we want it to live forever kept going by future generations
  11. I feel sorry for you Brett to be saddled with such a single mindedness is not healthy to me , soul music is part of my life and always has and will be , and I mean the music ,not 7inch vinyl discs, all of my social life all my friends and even my holidays revolve around soul music , it even comes into my other passion scooters in the form of old lambrettas and similar ovo arguments exist in the scooter world believe me , but surely lifes too short too fall out over the details , the difference is your a collector first and do give a damn , I am only interested with what comes out of the speakers , all of this debate started when I stated that ovo was an obsticle which in my view younsters and aspiring women dj,s have to overcome , and the old entrenched hegemony of fat balding old boys who dominate the scene and have gathered the records over the years, and I think use the OVO to keep it elitist ,maybe this was a cackhanded generalisation but it has shaken some feathers well I am for inclusion if we continue down the elitist route then we are doomed
  12. Brett if you care to read my posts I have not and do not advocate the wholesale playing of bootlegs or any illegtamate recordings , but I would not persecute someone who plays the odd boot ,say if its a request , theres nowt wrong with cds or re-issues in my book ,and why shoold we have to put with antiquated technology we are in the 21st century now , whats wrong with laptops if the dues have been paid
  13. correct but Im not advocating that only original audi cars are allowed at soul do,s
  14. well records on here go for thousands of pounds where does that money go , how much goes to the original artists , none ,if thats right then so be it but dont use the artists to futher the OVO cause at least with legit re-issues there are some royalties to come . yes Brett asking the original artist to sign a boot would be a disgrace.
  15. I have deep respect for the artists and what do they get from the OVO in the main naff all , it all goes to dealers so dont come with that old chestnut .
  16. ok to sum this up and will not quote verbatim but here are some of the comments paraphrased by myself;- youngsters are welcome on the scene and can dj if they go to different venues and collect OVO and after a period of time after scriming and saving and not given leg ups say after 5 or 6years, provided they complie a cd to send to promoters, prove they are not lazy t*ats, and get down on their knees and beg for a spot. or go away and leave us olduns alone and start their own venues,, women , most but not all dont give a shit about labels are not bothered they just like the music.they are all right for running the door ,cloak rooms and making the sarnies , and some venue even had a resident female dj back in the day. OVO shall be played at all times as it as always been except back in the day when thousands of boots were bought and played and nobody gave a fook then . ps I dont really agree to any of the above pps this is a work in progress
  17. where have I quoted you talking about women . in answering one of your post which I quoted i pointed out something someone else said about women , not me and not you, someone else . if you want to have a go then read the posts and do so
  18. nowt really just quoting this and it wasnt challenged at the time , read back think its on page 5 .
  19. I admire the sentiments but reallity is this as was posted on this thread not by me I may add, most women dont give a fook they just like the music . well I would add most punters dont give a fook either , for some on here in the rarified atmosphere thats blasphemy but its true ,
  20. I aint into naming and shaming but if you are on the scene in south or west yorks you may know of it . have not been there myself but one of the dj,s concerned told me he had had is fee docked for playing boots . which probably is fair enough if they are told its only OVO .
  21. would guess a lot more than 50% is OVO , the comment wasnt about labels or collectors it was about the know alls and soul police. see it all the time someone plays a record and certain people at certain venues immediatley pop up and check the deck to see if its a boot . know of a well known dj who has got the records but played a boot and was given a fine taken off his fee for doing so .
  22. suppose your right dave but its relative as to when you first got into the scene and many on here including myself were into northern before northern was coined as a name for the music we listen and dance to , I have to bow to people though who have a far superior depth of knowledge of the northern soul and rare music scene than myself , cheers B
  23. think I first heard it at soul in the sun 7 or 8 years ago popular with the crewe crowd, its just another quirky sound thats played , agree that I woudnt want to hear it in the main room though
