  1. over the the last couple of months we have been to new to us venues and the welcome we have had as been varied from total indifference to warm heartfelt appreciation for attending . looking around the rooms have noticed all of these venues are populated by promo resident djs and their mates and a smattering of regulars and not going to use any derogatory term but people who are not soulies, well angie and me know loads of people and always drop on someone we know and are immediately made room for at a table however this is not the case for strangers . with an eye on the demographics ie, a mainly 50 plus year olds and falling attendances at these venues surely its in the promoters/dj,s interests to make people welcome and not ignore them as are the cases I have seen recently where a group of youngish women were totally ignored after they had requested some motown several times , they attempted to get on the floor but were lost. I have witnessed this at several venues and we have always tried to talk to these people ,but sometimes they go away disappointed never to return . my point is , if you have the wherewithal its easy to put on an event invite ya besties to dj get decent guest djs and expect your mates and locals to attend ,then sit around the door chatting with your mates or hanging around the decks or for sale boxes totally oblivious to the punters especially people new to the venue . so come try harder and make newbies feel welcome . disclaimer not all venues are like this and have been made to feel more than welcome at some new to us venues ,
  2. my fave would play the music I like , sell john smiths smooth and be across the road from home and get me tucked up in bed just after 2am .
  3. that's a bit harsh jocko , don't think simon is in anyones pocket and although he is a decent kid he does go on a bit ,
  4. what were you doing before your spots Dave ,unless you were first up ,surely you should have been watchin the dance floor and gauging the punters vis a vis what will play and what will not to give you some idea of what to play to entertain the punters , looks like you weren't doing your homework . not that its any of my business
  5. I have a lot of respect for simon but we have long since agreed to disagree on certain issues wrt allniters vs soul nights ,and the differing genres of music within the scene , . how then can he comment on something he admits to not attending and these comments based on hearsay from maybe a dozen people out of the thousands who attended and probably had a cracking weekend , this dissing that goes on within the soul scene is getting a bit tedious and the word intolerance is really showing through, surely for our scene to endure we have to be inclusive and welcome newcomers to the scene or do you elitists want the scene to wither on the vine and die out on your demise , would it not be better to tolerate these people and lead by example in the ways and manners of our scene .
  6. I usually applaud when I am coming off the dance floor when one of my favourite tracks has been played ,to show my appreciation to the dj for playing it and for the artist who recorded it
  7. would be nice to see this mate, is there any way you can get it on here .
  8. wannabee dj,s ffs
  9. this hurts my listeners anall , its as bad as BS
  10. am fine n dandy mate , yes will be in Scarborough over the easter w/end with my trusty Lambretta and will be at the spa weekender later on in the year as well as the brid w/ender in june methinks . my answer was in responce to your drivel comment and its a pity you feel that way because if it werent for the drivel there would be no scene as we know it . anyway enough of this banter , KTF and all that bollox ,, see ya in scabby
  11. its a shame people like you really take yourself seriously , did you not see the smiley , we have crossed swords before Bret and will have to agree to dis-agree I am 57 yrs old been into soul music since I was fourteeen and I know what I like, including a lot of music into the 70s and beyond , I am deffo not blinkered thank you,, am just discerning and can smell and hear crap from a distance , I first said it on here a long time ago, to me its ,the emporers new clothes ., and I was responding to something someone posted earlier which to me was condescending, quote Only time I enjoyed Stoke, couldn't stand that drivel they play downstairs
  12. it hurt my ears and still does
  13. did wot at the back graham
  14. I like to get up and strut my stuff/shake a leg now and again sadly not as much as I used to , getting old and knackered methinks but sometimes the music and the atmosphere get me up and I can just keep going and its times like these when I really appreciate this scene , as for style well me and angie always have a chuckle when certain people we know get up to dance because its obvious theres another tune in their heads other than the one they are dancing to, and some peoples dancing styles are unique and quirky but hey nho who,s right whose wrong , if you like the sound and want to dance get up and dance there are no rules tell you what really amuses us is the newbies who have done a bit of latin or ballroom a la strictly and strut their stuff to northern
  15. a few years ago we took a good friend of our to the skeggy butlins w/ender it was his first northern soul experience , but he was constantly asking wots this called who is it by , well saturday afternoon he was up dancing like Billy and he was going on about an instrumental that had just been played and as per he asked the questions and I told him sliced tomatoes , just bros , well saturday night came and well into the night he asked what that instrumental was called that had been played in the afternoon so I told him , tinned tomatoes by the cirio brothers , then he promptly went up to the stage and asked the dj who happened to be Ian Gee to play tinned tomatoes by the cirio brothers , he came back looking a bit upset , so angie asked him what was up , he replied I thought you said everybody was dead friendly , so asked angie who as upset you , he told angie about his request and that the dj had called him a wanker and told him to f off,
  16. exactly len am just a mere pawn in this game did wigan once didnt care for it , no beer not good for any self respecting Barnsley lad , liked the music though , been listening to it years before wigan , , and though the pace was quicker back then with new quality (imho) sounds coming out week in week out , am still gobsmacked by the new to me sounds which crop up every now and then . therefore will not jump on the new /modern whatever is crap wagon any longer , will just say that I choose where I go , what I wear and what I like to listen to , and happily have a large group of friends who are likeminded , and at 57 years of age think I probably know whats best for myself ,
  17. tee hee, thes nowt wrong wi a bit of controversy , lets me just say theres allsorts of folk and all varieties of our wonderfull music in this scene the majority who just turn up in their thousands every w/end and attend the their preffered soul night, niter or w/ender and dont come on here and more than likeley, dont give 2 fooks about who or what is said on here , they just get on with it and enjoy it, even if they have a good old moan to the dj ,promoter or pasing punter, I love this scene I like coming on here , but its not life and death its about music , and its about time some people got real ,got a life and grew up . BTW am not aiming this at any one in particular its just that we need a reallity check now and again .
  18. Stayed at broadway park hotel in Sandown for the last 6 years , been in the tap a few times , loads of brummie lads get in there
  19. thats just what we do , the sands hotel on the front in Sandown , we first got the invite from some wolverhampton lads about 5 years ago and we have done it ever since , there are a number of people who dj and they just come and do a spot , on cds mindst but we have a cracking w/end . we dont bother going into ryde of an evening now .
  20. its not a bad record and was part of what got me into northern soul in the first place , but its one of those sounds along with out on the floor and dozens of others that are trotted out at weddings birthdays and funerals by civilian dj,s who think that this is it as far as northern is concerned .
  21. Hi Geordie hope you are well and seasons greetings do hope you can find some of these old flyers might clear this up wrt earliest use of the term OVO on flyers for venues cheers B
  22. theres a well known character who dj,s in south yorkshire who,s nickname is , thrombosis. apparantley he is a slow moving clot
  23. have also heard this myself but some time ago , same time span though .
  24. some interesting answers on this topic , it seems the term OVO first appear on this forum in 2005 but others have mentioned seeing this much earlier on flyers . would be interestingt if anyone has any old flyers with OVO being mentioned take note also with regard to the apparent ambiguity between boots and originals in the early days , there seems to be a concensus that it wasnt an issue back then among the general populace and not a contentious issue as it is today. but that is for another thread please .
