  1. Fat mod or fat greaser , could never make my mind up ,. and you think the soul scene is snobbish
  2. fook knows what the big lad would have said about this thread , once saw him play a record and after about 30 seconds with no one dancing . he stopped it ,said well nobdies bothered abart that then . and skimmed said disc to back of stage
  3. not a mod ,but back in the day a cracking DJ RIP Bub .
  4. I used to be able to fall back on a lot of records , but now I find I cant get back up
  5. why all the fuss ,theres nowt we can do about it , don't watch the show anyroadsart am usually out and will be tonight , off to the Grovenor rooms to watch and listen to two of the best young DJs on the scene , think neither of them went to the Station Road Casino ,
  6. its a crazy world , so much for OVO , like history ,authenticity is bunk .
  7. you cant go wrong going to places like Lowton and others people have mentioned , now you have taken the plunge I will give you a tip , don't get into vinyl its contagious and addictive and will bring you down financially and mentally and could lead to making you think you could be a DJ ,
  8. still recovering from a broken left leg so trying to get back into my good old shuffle routine , I know quite a few world champion dancers including the most recent one and I can say some are reasonably good dancers.. I have seen much better , great dancers (IMHO) who wouldn't be seen dead on the competition dancefloor .the guy in the Whitby vid is a classic example ,think he is from Peterborough or Northampton seen him loads of times and is a joy to watch , used to watch a guy called Clive from Sheffield who passed away not long since and he had a unique and endearing dance style in which he was totally in his groove ,and could give many more examples of great dancers who would not be seen dead in a competition , think they demean the scene and are not what the scene is about , once again the promoters are grasping the lowest common denominator to get people in and involved , and as for dance lessons lordy lordy what ever next , talc spreading studies , bar towel hand stitchin sessions . FFS
  9. no this is not a sales site but the mrs bought me a new camera for Christmas and I have the EOS700D so I have the EOS 400D for sale ,its in good nick and looking for £150.00 , its comes with carrying case and charger .
  10. from my prospective as one of the great unwashed ,think its great when we have so much choice , don't get this we were here first or we are doing the right thing in whatever shape or form , venues stand or fall on their own merit and not because of clashes with other venues ,if your good enough you will survive and prosper if for whatever reason you don't get the footfall then try something else , no one holds the deeds to northern soul ,
  11. Roy Croppers just released a cover of that Old Wigan favourite by Frankie and the Classicals what fort shall I do
  12. Track ones a cracking cover of that old Lou Rawls number by Zac Dingle AL sithee wen a get theear .
  13. that is the sad and sorry reality of society in general , people no longer feel the need or have the wherewithal to go out and socialise with their friends and peers . not for me went out last night and just got in from the Grosvenor rooms , cracking night ,great music and some great company, staying in is for losers as far as Im concerned , may as well be in the nick .
  14. no doubt this new venue at Rubblesfield will be blamed for the demise of some long running venues .
  15. its gotta be hp sauce for me .
  16. look at it this way , back in the day when a lad went out to a venue /dance/disco/nightclub/youthclub/local bop ,. he wouldn't well I wouldn't get up and dance on my own ,you either asked a girl or she asked you to dance and it was about pulling women as far as most blokes were concerned the music was a means to an end , then some older lads who had been to the torch or Manchester started playing and dancing to this ultra cool music and things changed ,they were the ace faces and we copied them , we were given some stick by some lads and even girls for dancing on our own but it was the music not just any old music but what became known as northern soul that had us running onto the floor and yes it was the music but it had to be that special music which made you want to dance . picture this ,as a callow young lad of 17 years down the pit early on a Monday morning haaving a sarnie and a cuppa before starting work and the conversation goes like this forgive the homophobic comments but am talking early 70s ,. ,nar then young Barney wheres tha bin this weekend , I went to an allniter . whats that then ,n what do ya get up ter . well we listen and dance to soul music , o ar is there lots of lasses there to dance with ,. oh yes but you don't dance with the girls ,you dance on your own is it a puff club then . no its just what we do . well what beer do they serve , no beer just pop ffs barney its definitely a queer club by the sound of it , no fookin beer . my street cred was zilch and took a bit of stick but 40 odd yeas later I still dance not as much but on my own .
  17. the northern soul scene is definitely a dance scene which to me as always played out an eclectic mix of music whose aim is to get boots on the ground and people on the floor , that's what created and defined it back in the day , solid on the floor dance music , and long may it continue , unfortunately there are people who have jumped onto the northern bandwagon and are clinging onto the coat tails of what I would call mainstream northern soul and playing undanceable music which is flat insipid and mediocre at best and called modern or rare and underplayed etc .
  18. Angie and myself used to make a point of going to different new to us venues ,but soon sussed that what was said on here bore no relation to the reality of the venues we attended in quite a few instances, and the insistence of the thumper mantra on here (if ya cant say owt good say nowt ) as ensured this continues. we have now got to the stage where we are now part of a large and like minded group of friends from different parts of the north and we go to places we know and like and will try new venues according to the credentials of the promoters and who is on the decks ,. basically we have filtered out the tripe and the sh*te and go to where we know we are going to have a good night ,. Simples ps the size of the crowd or venue ( like the value of the record ) bear no resemblance to the quality of the night ,.
  19. listened to this at dek greenhoffs the other day ,called in for a quick coffee and it had just come through the post , she has a great voice ,
  20. not surprising considering the saturation of events on the other two nights of every w/end , where theres an opportunity people will milk it , know its sounds a tad cynical but theres loads of wannabee dj,s and promoters who want to do their own thing and sunday is the only time to do it ,
  21. well coops that's a selfish viewpoint because the scene has got many devotees who are of an age to be our sons and daughters and you would deny these people something which as given us a unique and wonderfull scene which to me is still great and far from being killed off
  22. so to not upset the purists and keepers of the faith what do I wear as a nearly 60 year when I go to a northern soul night , for the record I usually wear a Ben Sherman button down collar (early 70s) or Fred Perry (early whatever ) and sta press type trousers , tassel loafers or brogues, in fact same as what I used to wear apart from a lot of sizes up. back in the day , so I am a dinosaur fashion wise and need some sartorial advice as to what is acceptable attire for the 21st century follower of northern soul .
  23. don't dj am just a mere punter , although fate draws me to the wrong side of them thar hills into Injun country from time to time I do have infinite patience and understanding which enables me to accept them as brothers and sisters in our soul family..
  24. what do you do when you are dj,ing in say Lancashire where receptive and intelligent don't exist , surely the dj holds all the cards and its their requirement to be intelligent and receptive . as far as I am concerned the scene is far from dying and the many thousands who turn out every w/end for whatever w/ender ,soul night or niter not to mention the holiday events abroad are testimony to this , whats changed from back in the day the only people who made money then were the dealers ,pushers and the odd lucky promoter , now every tom ,dick and harriet want to make a few quid out of the scene whether dj,ing , promoting ,selling records , selling clobber ,selling tat , doing tv commercials ,films ,documentaries . magazines et al even providing dance lessons , where theres soul theres a pig with a snout in the trough . apologies for lack of emoticons , : ) PS, I have some coloured clenched fist KTF tax disc holders going cheap
