    Maggie Mays Soul 45 Club

Lots of things happening this weekend, so wherever you go for your Soul fix, have a great weekend. Meanwhile back in the heart of the steel city on our usual regular 2nd Sunday we have this gentleman joining us on the monster decks. Brett has been at the cutting edge of the Soul scene for many years he is guaranteed to bring something fresh, different and new to our ears
  4. These two in my playbox for most of 2014......
  5. If you ever need a reminder of how good Levi Stubbs voice was just listen to the control he has. He can go from a whisper to a roar in an instant, while at the same time sounding effortless and melodic. Accapella version was only ever released on the lost and found CD series as far as I'm aware. Very hard to get hold of and £80 when released Rip Levi........
  6. I knew Clive from the early days at Samanthas and from college when we were both apprentice bricklayers, he never seemed to be any different in all the years I knew him. Just getting ready to attend his funeral now, no doubt there will be a big turnout to give him a good send off ....... Rest in peace Clive
  7. Can't fault any of the above, so many of my own favourites in there. Surprised no one has mentioned David Ruffin - Walk away from love!!!
  8. Plenty of venues playing rare underplayed and still plenty of records for us to hear for the first time. Choose the venues you go to wisely, the underground scene still exists at these venues and the northern soul circus and it's clowns don't find their way there!!!
  9. You said exactly what i was goin to say!!!!
  10. Always thought the Gold Parkway label was a re-issue
  11. Beat me to it 123, there you go
  12. Depends what you collect, there's a nice French Stateside copy. I'm happy with my US Parkway issue, whichever one you go after even the Parkway demo shouldn't cost you more than £40-£50, underated record imho and still cheap!!!

  14. I have a couple of records that have cracks, might have a go at this.......
  15. That sounds just like me...... also aged 57 thank god there are still people like us looking for something different to listen to and share with the "floor" instead of just playing the same old crowd pleasers all the time....
  16. Lovely soul record, ooh have i got it wrong is this the soul scene or the dance scene......lol
  17. Talking between records? now there's a subject for a whole new thread!!!!!!!!!
  18. Yeah, often wondered what that means, maybe its more about knowing the venue or some of the people that frequent the venue? I take reading the floor to mean keeping the beat going or knowing what record to follow with, which can be a bit hard if there's no one on the floor!!!!!!!!!
  19. Absolutely spot on, by the very nature of the "scene" most DJs are first and foremost collectors and should be booked (appropriate to the venue) for what they can bring to that venue musically. My philosophy as regards Djing on the soul scene..........To entertain and educate !!!
  20. That you Don? see you at MMs Saturday?
  21. The Poets - She Blew a Good Thing....... About 1970 on a juke box in a pub, the first record I knew I had to have that wasn't a new chart release. I had been collecting all the Stax and Atlantic stuff and buying all the latest UK Motown releases up to that point, but then realised there was so much stuff that had gone before that I had'nt heard............ This record unbeknown to me at the time set me off on a life long journey of tracking down Soul, Doo Wop and rare Soul (Northern Soul scene later) things were different in those days, you had to really work hard to find records, scour the small ads in the music press, junk shops, talk to people , look through peoples precious records........anyway I found one and still love it, in fact I have every copy and issue of this record now, and even still play it out now and again.......
  22. Herb Reed last surviving original member of the Platters passed away http://www.nydailyne...ticle-1.1090683 added by site Herb Reed (c. 1929 - June 4, 2012) was an American musician, vocalist and founding member of The Platters, who were known for their hits during the 1950s and 1960s. Reed is credited with creating The Platters name and was the last surviving original member of the group, which he co-founded with four other musicians in 1953. Reed thought of the group's name after noticing that DJs in the 1950s called their records, "platters." Reed was raised in poverty in Kansas City, Missouri, and moved to Los Angeles when he was fifteen years old.He moved to the Boston area during the 1970s, after the success of The Platters. Reed is the only member of The Platters who sang on all of the approximately 400 songs recorded by the group. His vocals can be heard on The Platters' biggest hits, including Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, The Great Pretender, Twilight Time and My Prayer As the last surviving original member of The Platters, Reed waged a long, but successful, federal court battle over the rights to the name, The Platters. The courts ruled that Reed was the only heir to the group's name. In 2012, Reed said in an interview, "It's not right to have someone steal your name. It's just not right. We were cheated back then, but that's how things were done...It's theft, and I have to fight it so that no other artist faces this." Reed toured throughout his career. He performed as many as 200 concerts per year until 2012, when he stopped due to declining health. Reed died of complications from several ailments, including heart disease, at a hospice in Boston on June 4, 2012, at the age of 83. He had most recently resided in Arlington, Massachusetts. via wikipedia

  25. Absolutely love Doo Wop, or to be more accurate I prefer to call it vocal harmony, loads of early Vibrations tracks fit the bill, especially the stuff on Checker or Okeh. Miracles, Dells, Showmen, Coasters and many many "Soul" groups started out as "Doo Wop" and some of their best work is from the early to mid 60s period ...........
