This week sees the 10th anniversary of the death of Amy Winehouse. I thought she deserved a personal tribute on these pages. Whilst she won’t be everyone’s taste it would be hard not to ignore her impact and achievements . Amy’s Roots Amy’s roots were forged in the migration of her great great Grandfather from Minsk , Belarus to Londons East End in the 1890’s . By the time Amy was born in 1983 the family had settled , with many other East End Jewish families in the North London suburb of Southgate. Father Mitch was a Black Cab driver despite an early divorce he became an influential figure in her later career.Amy’s musical legacy was forged by a number of uncles who were Jazz musicians but more so by her paternal Grandmother Cynthia who the young Amy adored. Pictures of Cynthia and Amy showing startling similarities. Cynthia, occasional Jazz singer , dated legendary club owner Ronnie Scott . Legend has it Amy grew up hearing her Dad and Cynthia deliver Frank Sinatra Jazz standards in the house, but she has also cited her love of Salt and Pepper and The Beastie Boys. This fusion of both retro classics and contemporary sounds was to be her hallmark and path to success. Cynthia provided far more than musical influence , she was flamboyant , and something of a mystic absorbed by Tarot cards and the fragility of fate and destiny . By the age of 12 Amy had bought her own guitar and was writing songs. Her influences were never merely cited retrospectively to appear hip, evidenced by details of an early ‘Chill Out ‘ cassette tape. It includes the often cited Ella Fitzgerald , Frank Sinatra , Carol King but also Ray Charles Curtis Mayfield Edwin Star . She was encouraged by Cynthia to attend drama schools . At 17 she became the featured female vocalist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and by the age of 19 she has signed to Simon Fullers 19 Management, and began a long working relationship with Producer Salaam Remi. The buzz about Amy triggered keen interest from a number of major labels , but Island Records A and R man Darcus Beese acting on a tip off sealed a deal that was to secure the release of her debut album Frank in 2003. Blues and Soul magazine feature following the release of Frank. Much of it had been written whilst Amy was still a teenager , it provided a credible debut of Neo Soul over a mix of drum and base and mellow Jazz. Whilst it won an Ivor Novello award , was shortlisted for a Mercury prize and reached platinum sales it was only a shade of what was to come. Amy performed at Glastonbury , V Festival and Montreal Jazz festival to promote an album she was often self critical of . Back to Black Co producer on her debut album had been Salaam Remi whose previous work had included The Fugees, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Ms Dynamite. This collaboration continued for the follow up Back to Black album which saw her travel to New York and Miami to work with British born legendary director Mark Ronson . Amy developed a close working relationship with both men , and also the Dapp Kings who were brought in work on the album which provided a shift away from Jazz towards sixties soul and girl groups , with additional elements of Neo Soul, modern blues and ska .Both men have admitted that Amy was not the easiest person to work with , and it took some coaxing and a high degree of trust for her to accept changes in production. They produced album made of ten songs that average three minutes with 5 of the nine songs are under 3 mins. Amy poured out her sorrow and frustration in a style that was both sultry and agonising at the same time. The songs were marked by references to soul idols (Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway) sexual frustration and the contradictory emotions in modern relationships . It drew on Motown , Neo Soul and Billie Holiday’s legacy. Whilst Amy’s voice was never ever going to compete with Aretha or Glady’s it was by any standards a Soulful album. Completed within five months it was destined to become a modern classic It barely had a weak track and was to provide 5 singles within a year . Musically Rehab was ironically the most commercial and was on everybody’s lips and radios world wide, a cruel irony given that Amy was never more in need of rehab at the time . It reached the UK and US top ten in October 2006. It was followed by You Know Im No Good , Back to Black, Tears Dry on their own , and prophetically Love is a Losing Game. A cynical mind might feel Island were milking a talent that wasn’t destined to shine for long.By the end of 2011 it had sold 3.5 million copies in the UK and 20 million worldwide and award ceremonies couldn’t get enough of Amy and the Back to Black team. The Brits’s , Mercury , Rolling Stone Magazine , and 5 Grammys’ all took a chance on giving her a an acceptance speech. Amy’s Decline Within the next 2 years a catalyst of events would combine to result in a Amy’s drift towards self destruction. There had been rumours of mood swings and depression as a child and school exclusions which were denied. There is a stark warning in a statement from Amy to camera in the posthumous 2015 film Amy about her inability to handle fame and attention. Her early manager and friend Nicky Shymansky later disclosed to Daily Telegraph journalistJessamy Calkin : ‘It was around February 2005, in the space of a week, everything changed. I called her, and she sounded different. I remember saying to my brother, “Something weird is going on. Amy doesn’t sound like Amy.”‘That was the week she met Blake Fielder-Civil. She changed overnight." He reportedly admitted to introducing her to Class A Drugs , then broke off their relationship to return to an existing girlfriend. Whilst Amy never hid her frequent use - or dependency of Canabis and Alcohol she was reported as chanting ‘Class A drugs are for mugs’ at the beginning of her shows prior to meeting Fielder - Civil . Amy’s family and fans have pointed to the death of her beloved grandmother Cynthia in May 2006 as a trigger for her emotional decline.Amy Winehouse and Fielder-Civil married secretly in Florida in May 2007 Their relationship was marked by co dependency , binge sessions , violent break ups and emotional make ups between the two. They were divorced within two years, but by this time Amy appeared in full decline . Ive chosen not to detail the sad gory details of her personal decline which were captured almost gleefully by a tabloid press. She died alone on 23rd July 2011 aged 27 , and the inquest reported blood alcohol levels as .416 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood with readings of over 400 likely to lead to lead to a coma and death. Amy’s Legacy: Ahead of her death there were hopes of her delivering a song for a new James Bond song ,and also rumours of a Ska album.Amy Winehouse was one of a long line of white UK female singers who have embraced Soul music and delivered it with passion, respect and integrity. She belongs on that list along with Dusty , Lisa Stansfield , Joss Stone. There is no doubt Amy inspired countless singers to follow her , with Adele and Duffy among them. Emile Sande, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith are among many who have also cited her influence. You might not have wanted her for a neighbour , your daughters best friend or your sons new girlfriend, but in a music scene dominated by X Factor clones it was hard not to admire her raw energy.Amy sealed the bond that so many performers and artists in this country have with Soul music in all its forms. Its passion gripped her and she felt it no less than any of us who have taken to the floors of an all niter. RIP. Cool Notes 10th Anniversary Tributes The fact that the BBC have scheduled over 10 hours of TV and Radio programmes this week is testimony to the extent of Amy’s talent, influence and popularity . Really good article, and an important reminder that we cannot separate the music from the people and society that delivered it . I would like to make a plug for a ground breaking series that informed me. -
Good point and to my shame omitted from my original post , at the back of my mind I knew she has served in local government and Id like to think Detroit was a better place for it. KTF.

This is a Biographical account of the FBI”s attempt to curb Billie Holiday speaking out via her concerts against segregation and racism. This included her performance of the powerful “Strange Fruit “ , an adapted poem written by Abel Meropol , American Communist in response to lynchings in the South. Its directed by Lee Daniels (known for Precious , The Butler.) Billie Holiday is played by Andrea Day , whose voice has been compared to Eartha Kitt , Adele, Amy Winehouse and naturally Billie Holiday. Andrea has won numerous awards for her songs but this is her first film lead. The film is produced and streamed by HULU (US , not available in the UK) but due for cinema release on March 12th 2021. National Museum of African American Music opened in Nashville.
Coolnotes posted an article in News Archives
Today (Martin Luther King Day) finally saw the long over due opening of the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM ) in Nashville. What might have been a star studded gala night was reduced to an official ribbon cutting and presentation of a $1million donation from Amazon . It opens to the public next week. The NMAAM (commonly pronounced Nyaam) is a visual and aural celebration of the history and achievement of Black American music. Visitors begin their journey in the Roots Theatre with an introductory film presentation focussing on the influence of West and Central African cultures and slavery which shaped so much of the music that was to come. You are then invited to explore the five separate galleries which detail the evolution of Black music. The Crossroads room is devoted to the origins of the Blues in the 19th Century. Detailing its growth in the Delta states and its migration to the Northern cities where it became a key ingredient for the emergence of Rock and Roll and inspired so many of the British beat legends . A Wade in the Water room charts whats described as ‘ golden age of gospel music” and its role in the development of Soul music. Jazz music is acknowledged in ‘Love Supreme’ which explores the emergence of the music around New Orleans and its subsequent genres such as Dixieland, Swing, Bebop, Fusion and its expanse into a world wide phononomon all of its own. One Nation Under a Groove pulls all these threads together to detail the emergence of Soul and RnB . ( RnB having long since replaced the term Soul Music in the US ) This room has the unenviable task of detailing the history of labels such as Motown, Stax and Philadelphia International , and hopefully many of their tributaries and legacies. As well as Funk, Disco, and modern dance music. This will include Disco, House , and the emergence of Hip Hop which also gets its own room. The Message , a room which charts Hip Hop’s New York origins and influencers and growth into the dominant force it has become in todays Black music. These five rooms are all linked by a central corridor labelled The Rivers of Rhythm , which reinforces how so much of these genre’s inspired and influenced each other as well as reflecting the social and political issues which both influenced and inspired them using an animated timeline and interactive touch screens. NMAAM suggests allowing at least 90 minutes for your visit, with accompanied bookable guided tours available , but you are welcome to take longer and given an entrance fee of just short of $25 you would probably want to .Now there are many of us in the UK who could easily fill 90 minutes on Berry Gordy - Saint or Sinner. The prospect of trying to encompass the whole history a music that we are so passionate about into the time allowed for Colchester to beat Crewe seems nothing short of an anathema. Clearly this is not a project primarily aimed at us , but it deserves our attention and support. It serves to celebrate the history of all forms of Black music and its pervasive cultural legacy and impact . It acknowledges , albeit often as an introduction, the breadth of its reach and the huge social and political hurdles it had to overcome. The Black Lives Matter campaigns add further resonance to continuing struggles. NMAAM is very much embedded in celebrating contemporary artists , which may prove its bread and butter , as well as feeding a local educational need. This will include educational workshops for local schools . The venue is also likely to host live concerts and hospitality events and is expected to provide a much needed boost to Nashvilles share of the tourist and hospitality market.NMAAM social media platforms will promote the museums facilities and celebrate both historical and contemporary figures in Black American history, including a number of Nashville based artistes .(Sadly no mention of Nashville legends Bobby Hebb and Robert Knight )There are frequent sound bite Facebook tributes to the past ( Queens of 80’s Hip Hop, Issac Hayes, Larry Graham.)Trivia Tuesday provides music history snap shots in time . Their You Tube channel features My Music Matters /Legends Gala provides profiles or interviews on artists such as Avery Sunshine, The Barkays , Kirk Franklin. Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters. I can’t deny my disappointment that their social media focus is overwhelmingly geared towards Hip Hop and modern RnB, with very limited acknowledgement of the the 60’s and 70’s which laid so many of the foundations for todays successful artists . You are feeling your age when a retro historical flash back takes you back to the eighties ! A You Tube tribute to David Porters career allocated him 1 min 18 seconds.NMAAM ’s convention and family visitors will be steered by parents brought up on Hip Hop and RnB, whose children probably won’t be hooked by Sam Dees and Gladys Knight. Lets give them some credit for just getting the place open. please make a visit to their social media links and make your own minds up. GBH is a Boston based TV and Radio company with a quality pedigree in public broadcasting as well as contributing to local education initiatives , despite that unfortunate moniker !This includes an on line Open Vaults section which includes an open archive of the stations reports on American political and cultural history throughout the last 70 years. This includes a Rock and Roll archive with interviews with about 50 artists , half of them from the Soul music scene, which might have some appeal https://openvault.wgbh.org/collections/rock_roll/interviews Ive had a quick look at two of them , which are made up of 3 separate interview clips which total about an hour each. Thomas Beans Bowles : Two interview clips with Motown session player, song writer and tour manager of the Motown Revue .It covers Maurice King Orchestra at the Flame Show Bar, his introduction and recruitment by Berry Gordy . His Motown years and his role on the Motown Revue , and the issue of the segregated South. Al Bell : 3 interview clips totalling an hour .His arrival at Stax and his work in promotion , his work with Sam Cooke , Otis Redding and the Stax European Tour . Issac Hayes and a reflection on the cultural and political significance of Stax Records . There are also similar interviews with : Ben E King , Billy Davis ,Cholly Atkins , Bootsy Collins, Bobby Eli and Vince Montana , Claudette Robinson , Nelson George ,Martha Reeves, Maceo Parker , Teddy Pendergrass , Cynthia Robinson and Sly and the Family Stone. Gamble and Huff , Jerry Wexler. I discovered GBH after watching their documentary "United States of Conspiracy." A riveting but scary production which explores the emergence of Alex Jones, a far-right political extremist, who helped give rise to President Donald Trump and normalized conspiracy theories, which clearly is a very topical but separate issue shown on PBS America . Congratulations to Soul Sanctuary and all those involved in this project. I remember hearing Nina Simone's haunting version of Strange Fruit many years ago. I doubt there will be many who wont be moved by the message. There have been a lot of positive spiritual songs released this year which address both the impact of racism and our struggle with COVID. Music has a great potential to both lift us and bring us together . Id reccomend IDMC , and also the House Gospel Choir , and The Weather Girls and The Terri Green Project/Cornell Carter and Friends version of 'Whats Going On" . Keep the Faith . Cool Notes. -
Sad news .. I grew up on his hits and he provided a great Reggae/Soul crossover . Have we ever needed " I can see clearly now " more ? A song for our times. RIP , Keep the Faith .

I thought given the one hour available episode 1 did a credible job, and I personally think it would be insulting and selling the music (and its followers ) short by ignoring its gospel roots and the civil rights issues around at the time. -
Im a big fan of the Hone Cones , whose records don't get played often enough for my liking . Sad news. RIP.

Not strictly a full performance but a short version of a song that holds so much for me, and the Sounds of Blackness original saw me through some dark times. This epic version with Wolverhampton's finest is a song for our times. Keep the faith , Stay Safe.
