  1. It was the first time that the World Heavyweight title had been split between the WBC and WBA. Muhammad Ali was stripped of the title because he had evaded the draft to go to Vietnam. Ernie Terrell refused to call him by his adopted Muslim name in an effort to force a showdown and when the contest finally happened it was a one-sided affair. For 15 rounds Ali taunted him saying "What's My Name" and utterly outboxed him. Cassius Clay (as he was then) recorded a version of Ben E. King's 'Stand By Me'.
  2. If I'm not mistaken it was a remake of a version by New Censation on Pride, written and produced by Van McCoy.
  3. Interestingly Ernie Terrell was the WBA World Heavyweight Champion in 1965/66 and is the elder brother of Jean Terrell of the Supremes.
  4. Got most of his Kudu albums - the man was a genius on the sax. Been looking out for his Motown album 'Reed Seed' on CD but never found it.
  5. According to Dave Nowell's book, 'Too Darn Soulful' it opened on 30 January 1965 featuring Billy J Kramer & the Dakotas. Chris Burton was refused the renewal of his licence on 16 March 1973 because of the 'drug problem'.
  6. Linda Griner - Goodbye Cruel Love Norman Ricketts - Tomorrow is a Brand New Day
  7. First issue of Black Music would have been December 1973.
  8. Have a try at this one: https://www.discogs.com/labels/
  9. I was putting together a video of a 1940s Weekend on the SVR and needed some 40s music so I bought a CD to find some appropriate tunes and I came across 'Put Your Arms Around Me Honey' by Joe Loss & His Orchestra which turned out to be the same song as the Sherrys and was written by Albert Von Tilzer/ Junie Mcree. Interestingly the credits on the Sherrys record are either Joe Cook or the Sherrys (depending on original or pressing).
  10. It was on the flip side of 'I Don't Want to Discuss It' by Little Richard on Okeh.
  11. My copy of the Carstairs (issue not WD) has PR scratched on the run out and the number RC 2857-1-1-1. The 'Something Fishy Going On' coloured demo has the same except the number is RC807A-S-1 (and M on the mono side). The 'Reach Out For Me' has the same with PrR scratched on the Stereo side and JR on the Mono side. Can't quite see why the latter one would have been pressed as it wasn't an in-demander.
  12. I've only just dug it out but I must have liked it otherwise I wouldn't have kept it - will give it an airing this week along with the other two main ones 'Something Fishy' and the Carstairs.!
  13. I used to get B&S, Black Music and Black Echoes and they were certainly a good way to keep up with what was happening. Unfortunately , I didn't keep many copies - in fact just the 3 issues of Black Music with articles about the Northern Scene by Tony Cummings (Jun. '74, Jan. '75 and Nov. '75), due to moving about the country a bit and not having the storage space. BM also used to list a guide to new US releases each month complete with label and catalogue number and also full page adverts from Selectadisc offering the latest pressings for the princely sum of 90p.
  14. I've also got a copy of Universal Mind 'Reach Out For Me' RC-811 which is a white Stereo/ Mono demo again with no distribution details.
  15. Sorry I missed that one.

  17. I e-mailed Radio 2 with the error message yesterday and it is now working.
  18. If you're going to enlarge your scans then you will have to scan at the greatest dpi that your scanner will allow.
  19. I've only got a couple of membership cards left from my soul days - 6T's and the Casino. The rest have been mouldering in some landfill site near Southampton for about 25 years waiting for Tony Robinson to excavate them in a couple of 100 years time. Memories are a little bit vague but I remember going to the Railway at West Hampstead probably in '79 on the recommendation of Jon 'Shay' Richardson, Jackie Patmore and Pete Widdison and finding it a refreshing change from the overplayed Northern 'Oldies' that were on the scene at the time. Also went to the 100 Club before the 'Nighters and the Notre Dame Hall in Leicester Square. Left Southampton back in '82 and haven't been to a 6Ts since. Here's a scan of the 6T's card (no. 48).
  20. Pete Mitchell doing the interview. Picture on page 122 of next week's Radio Times.
  21. Curtis Mayfield - Superfly definitely No. 1 closely followed by Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man Worth a mention is 'Together Brothers' by Barry White & the Love Unlimited Orchestra (haven't seen the film of this one). A good CD of soul blaxploitation movie themes is 'Badmutha's' with a good cross-section from Trouble Man, Shaft, Cleopatra Jones, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, Superfly, Slaughter's Big Rip-Off, Balck Caesar, etc.
  22. I have a couple of good CDs with some cracking Marvin Gaye tracks which are worth checking out: Early Classics - Marvin Gaye on Spectrum 552118 (1996) Lost and Found (Love Starved Heart) - Marvin Gaye on Motown 153 868 (1999)
  23. I've only got the old video but I think it is an important piece of work. As a movie it suffers from poor editing, cheesy (old) Dr Who style graphics, some stilted 'talking heads' and slightly embarassing mimed songs. However, it allowed us to see a great number of artists who would otherwise have remained faceless cult heroes on the scene and Ian Levine is to be congratulated on having the foresight to film them while they were still with us. Lurking somewhere in the mass of footage is probably a good film but it really would need a very good editor to bring it out. Meanwhile let's just enjoy it as the historical document that it is.
  24. As far as I can remember JM was reputed to have paid £170 for James Fountain 'Seven Day Lover' only to suffer the same fate as the earlier 'Cigarette Ashes' buyer when it was released in the UK on Cream shortly afterwards. It must have been in 1976 as the Cream issue has that copyright date.
  25. Twisted Wheel Torch Va Va's Catacombs Cleethorpes Pier Early Blackpool Mecca (didn't make it there till '77)
