-
Mentioned earlier in the thread, Tina Mason.. LP only - 'A Good Kind Of Hurtin' along with her AWESOME version of 'What' !! With H B Barnum in charge of production these two tracks are both well worth checking out !!

According to the MGM listing in the US Stak-O-Wax catalogue the first release of 1969 was 14102, with 14217 the first in 1970.. This would put the Embers release (14167) as being sometime during 1969. Fingers

Said copy now resides in my collection Ezzy, having purchased it off Mickey last year. As a point of interest for the topic starter - my copy is exactly as he describes his own. Fingers

Thought I saw a look-a-like boot of the Charles Sheffield on ebay recently ?? Fingers

That's the fella.. He had me up for a guest spot at a Wednesday night pub do in Lynn on one occassion. On trying to find the place we stopped and ask 3 or 4 people for directions - all replying 'Sorry, I'm not from around here'. Which we found a bit hard to believe and wondered instead if they were, in fact, locals that just couldn't be arsed !! but we decided to ask one more person, regardless. Bearing in mind we were heavily under the influence of herbal cigarettes at the time (most in the car, anyway - and those that didn't indulge just HAD to be affected via passive smoking..), once we drew the exact same response as previous answers we all just fell about laughing and drove off without saying another word !! Goodness knows what the bloke we'd stopped to ask made of it all.. Fingers

That's right Arthur.. I'd completely forgotten about your appearances - sorry !! Didn't Ginger DJ there on at least one occasion, also ?? The Ascots - would that be 'Another Day' ?? If so then that would've been the first time I heard it. It's in one of my notebooks from the time - where I'd jot down play lists, wants, etc - as having first heard it at Kings Lynn, along with the likes of Betty Turner 'Winds..' & The Youth Opportunity Programme 'Of Hopes..' The pop (cringe..) !! Remember the likes of The Girl's From N.Y.City (Parkway); The Happy Cats (Ocampo); being quite big at the time - along with 'Green Onions' (YMCA Anthem tune, methinks..) & 'House For Sale' too.. Fingers

Was that the day we drove to the chippy, Martyn.. 'Cos of having a severe case of the munchies, and the chocolate had run out ?? Or was it one of those 'country road' drives ?? I didn't leave you stranded out in the middle of nowhere did I ?? That was always a fave of mine at the time - someone get out for a 'piddle stop' and we'd drive away. The looks on their faces. Always went back for 'em mind.. Even if it were 15 minutes later. Had some great times in that Jag, aside from the brilliant days we enjoyed at the YMCA. Oh to be young again.. Fingers

And YET ANOTHER track sold as an EXCLUSIVE by ROB MOSS - along with the Chris Clark 'Sweet Loving' - to name just two tracks sold by the aforementioned (only two years ago !!) as exclusive 'ONLY COPIES' !!! They are all coming back to bite him on his arse now though - thought he'd escape any potential for comeback by emigrating.. Unfortunately for him he had to return to the UK and now he's being caught out BIG STYLE !! Fingers..

I didn't know Max well - only having met him in person for the first time just under three years ago. His reputation and respect, though, I had been aware of since first starting on this beloved music scene of ours.. Within 6 months of my first 'niter I was bitten by the vinyl bug and started to take greater interest in the artists & labels of the wonderful Soul 45's I was hearing week in week out. Having heard a 'brilliant tune' one night I enquired of my elder brother (Ada, and the person responsible for getting me into the music & taking me to my first 'niter..) as to who/what it was. 'Lou Pride - I'm Cumin' Home In the Morning' was the response, along with 'A DJ from from the Cat's found it.. Blue Max' !! From then on his name was engraved in my brain and my respect for him grew ever greater over the years the more I heard about him, his little shop in the west midlands, and the 'new' tunes he was renowned for 'discovering' over the years - even though, in a lot of cases (Lou Pride being just one..), other 'DJ's' went on to be acclaimed with 'breaking' several of Max's discoveries. I feel very privileged indeed - even if only for a short time - to have got to meet The Legend himself, to have indulged in the many conversations we had and, most of all, to be able to say how proud I am to have known him. R.I.P. Max Your Soul may well rest, now, in heaven.. But your legacy will stay on this mortal earth forever !! Fingers

In addition to Ken Cox's East Anglian Soul Club promotions this was the other main promotion I DJ'd for at the time, run by a loveable rogue called 'Tiny'. Myself & Nev were residents but other regular spinners included Kev Draper & Tony Worot in addition to Soul Sam & Hammy who have already been mentioned, with both Jonathan & Rob Smith supplementing from time to time. Always a great day at the YMCA.. Always packed to the rafters and a joy to see a non-stop, heaving dance floor. And, in addition to the hi-waister/baggie brigade, full of fashions that covered the skinhead and mod fraternity's in abundance . Them were the days.. Fingers

Wanted - Betty Lavette - Let Me Down Easy
Ficklefingers replied to Premium Stuff's topic in Record Wants
Chris Anderton has one on his latest list.. Fingers -
Thank you so much for that Sebastian.. I just KNEW one of you guy's would come up with some solid material on this 45.. What a day I'm having - I'm OD'ing on new knowledge gained almost entirely at once. Great stuff !! Goodness me !! I must be SOOOO sad !! Fingers
-
Are you sure that YOU have the correct script, Tony Quote from opening thread: As we are all aware many of the stars of Motown did versions of Motown records, eg. My Girl , temps,Stevie etc. but what about the non motown artists and labels.? Whats your favourite versions ? Or is it me ?? Am I missing summink here ??? My humble apologies if I have - it is a Monday tho'.. Fingers
-
I'm afraid he won't be able to play it to you Tony.. It's sitting here - in my record room !! I was going to add a clip to Refosoul and post it here - but access denied at the mo whilst it's being 'worked on' !?! So, I'll have to try later today - check back this evening some time.. Fingers

Not only topping my Premier League of such covers, at the moment.. with MASSIVE thanks to Ricky Warburton for making me aware of it. But the ONLY player in the division !! Nothing else can get within two divisions, for me - bit like being a 'Butch' of this type of record. Marc Leon 'Nothing's Too Good For My Baby' (Australian HMV) Total knockout production - as is the case, I find, with many Aussie/Kiwi Northern covers .. Fia Karim's version of Dana Valery's classic (Australian Spin) being THE ultimate - in my little black book at least !! Fingers
-
Very much appreciate you taking the time to inform us of that, Michael.. The small task (usually) of my dating an item is generally one of those areas that fall way, way down the list where priorities are concerned - unless it's urgency dictates otherwise, as sometimes is necessary. That's another piece of the puzzle, then - what about the piece that's got confirmation either way of a R&W demo ?? If it did get a general relase on stock copies - would that not then lead to the chances being more in the affirmative - rather than negative ?? Any thoughts.. ?? (A much wiser, today..) Fingers
-
Top Man, Steve.. And nice to put another piece of this 45's puzzle into place Question NOW Steve.. Are you gonna sell it to the thread starter then.. Or what ?? Fingers
-
Believing that this saw a Repro or a Reissue sometime during 2009 Craig ?? Demo copies ?? Can't swear if identical flip as original without checking though - but don't really have the luxury of that spare time at the mo. Finishing on the note that added to my 'wants'three years ago - without me even getting NEAR to 'working on it' since then !! One day.. Maybe Hope you're keeping well Mr B and no doubt bump in to ya somewhere soon Fingers
-
Okay.. My copy is defo sold and, as Andy so rightly predicted, my list price was @ £40 !! I know it isn't the sort of 45 you would come across in the majority of sales boxes - or on sales lists even, as it certainly wouldn't appeal to the 'mainstream 'niter attendee'. (!?!) Nor would it be to the taste of (probably ??) the majority of collectors, I would say. Although there are sufficient numbers of peeps who's 'boat's' WOULD be 'rocked' by the boxes this 45 would tick.. People like Ezzie Brown & Steve Zelenyj are two aficionado's that immediately spring to mind, and who might be worth a shout ?? Even if it's only to point you further on the road to where a copy can be located & obtained.. ?? I'm afraid that's about the sum of the input / contribution I can offer.. Sorry !! But good luck in your quest and I hope it's only a short journey to fruition for ya Fingers PS : Just now remembered - defo try Neil O on here. He just might be in a position to assist with a copy ???? I don't know how often Neil looks on here - but he has been / is currently promoting a 'new' promotion in Letchworth - so checking the up-coming soul nites thread should provide a better gauge to an answer to that. A PM will cost nothing more than the time it takes to compile & send it ??

Very nice, early 60t's (??) ditty - and very reminiscent of 'Working In A Coalmine' if memory serves me correct ?? (which would probably be a first.. ) and on U.S. Atlantic, at least.. I know I used to have a black & white demo of this from my Turntable Records list days (2000 - 2003). I'll have a dig around this evening at some point to see if I still have it, then PM ya with the result - soon as, Dave. I don't know if this actually saw release or if DJ only - I've only seen the B&W DJ (two copies only, in over ten years) and always wondered if it also saw a Red & White DJ ?!?.. That's all I can tell ya at the mo - but my old stock database will give me more details as to (my) value at the time - and what I sold it for, if it is sold. As a quick afterthought.. May be the kind of thing possibly more available via some of our European cousins perhaps ?? - as I believe it's appeal fits in much more with the very widely collected popcorn(y)/soul type thingies ?? Perhaps if any of those Soulie Cousins I mention above - that are members on here - read this thread, they might be in a better position to give you more of a rundown as to price & availability etc.. Sebastian ?? Marc ?? Loren ?? And all those others, who's names I can't place at present but are walking encyclopedia's for this type tune ?? Purely, sort of 'educated guesses' type things that run thru me tiny little brain as I type on here, really.. I may be completely wrong !?! Which is the ONE thing me missus is ALWAYS praising me about - and what I'm a NATURAL at : Gettin' it wrong !! Fingers
-
Really ?!? Wow !!!! I wasn't aware of that.. If you get two offers I'd appreciate a heads up on the second copy, please. Fingers
-
LP only track, Lenny.. 'Soul Galore' album. Hope this helps Fingers

The conversation Dekka and I had that included the topics of Move On & Burnley wasn't anything to do with the 100 Club - or our enjoyment of it that night - only that it just happened to be the place we were at when we had the said conversation.. Fingers
