Well todays show was a good one. Richard Searlings show featured the crew from Londons biggest little soul club These Old Shoes. The radio stars were Jo Wallace, Paul Thomas Peter and Martin Thomason. And what a great show they gave us, a classy varied mix of some great soul tunes, covering all aspects and styles. With worthwhile background info and a fair few laughs. Of course Jo W was very retiring and in the background for the m... in your dreams! Reckon by the end of the show she had reorganised the whole studio, was telling Richard S what to do and how to do it at the same time phoning Kev Roberts up to go for pizza. Ok maybe not, but thewhole crew come over good and as said well enjoyable and worthy tune selections. Nice one Shoes people, well enjoyable show - be looking at uploading some clips soon

A brand new Northern event, in a brand new venue. Many people in the Yorkshire area will remember the old Brooklands motel just of the M1 at Barnsley. That has now been replaced by a superb multimillion pound hotel complex with its very own nightclub designed specifically for the over 30s. The Scarletts club hosts its first Northern night on February 23rd with resident DJs Snowy and Derek Pearson. For those that have never been to Barnsley before the Brooklands complex is situated less than 5 minutes from junction 37 of the M1 motorway, which makes it less than 30 minutes away from Leeds, Sheffield, Wakefield, Rotherham, Chesterfield and East Manchester. Tickets purchased in advance cost £4:00, or pay on the door £5:00 before 10pm, £7:00 thereafter. Doors open to the club at 9pm through till 2am. There are also special deals for admission plus bed and breakfast. More details can be obtained from the hotel on 01226 299571 or http://www.brooklandshotel.com

PAVILION, HUDDERSFIELD, SATURDAY JANUARY 12 2002 By Shirley Stewart This is a slightly biased review as this venue is run by my better half, Colin Wood, with the help of the other resident DJs, John Purvis and Eddie Engel. The venue has been running since last May every second Friday of every second month. Previous attendance’s had been disappointing so after the October date we decided to change the soul nite to a Saturday for 2002. Whether a Friday night had been the reason for previous low numbers or word had spread about the sort of soul nite we were aiming for I’m not sure, but Saturday night was definitely our best night to date, both for the numbers through the door and the class of music played. Soulies came from far and wide and were not disappointed with the records that the DJs spun – although the dance floor was hard work so there was not quite as much action on it as many of us dancers would have liked, anyone who knows me knows that I just lurve to dance. Still the toons given long overdue airings more than made up for the shin killing dance floor. The guest DJs were Alex Jones who has a superb record collection (if you ever get chance to hear him DJ you’ve just got to make the trip) and “Toddy Tim” Brown, whose reputation precedes him. Tim, along with others, turned up around midnight after DJing at John and Janet Hillel’s wedding (congratulations you two by the way – sorry we missed your special day). Col had been starting to pace the floor a little as panic began to set in when the midnight hour loomed and still no sign of Tim, as some of those attending had come along to hear Tim’s set and Col was beginning to think John & Janet had maybe kidnapped him or his records ………….. hmmm what would I do, kidnap Tim or kidnap his records? Anyway we were all treated to a wicked night full of spanking music and a huge thank you to all the DJs and punters alike. I hope you enjoyed yourselves I know I did!!!! Anyway these are a selection of tunes played, I hope I’ve credited the records to the appropriate DJs but if I’ve boobed in any way I’ll apologise now Eddie Engel: Tokays – Baby, Baby, Baby Bobby Taylor – There are roses in this world somewhere Brice Cofield – Ain’t that right Ivorys – Please stay Joey Delorenzo – Wake up to the sunshine girl H B Barnum – It hurts too much to cry The Professionals – That’s why I love you Kell Osborne - The lonely boys song Freddie Houston – Soft Walking Mikki Farrow – Set my heart at ease Fashions – When love slips away Joe Graves – A boy and a girl fall in love Sequins – Try my love Bernie Williams – Ever again Gambrells – Jive talk Ty Karim – You really made it good to me Alex Jones: Hytones – Bigger & better Servicemen – Are you angry Salvadors – Stick by me baby Bob & Fred – I’ll be on my way Emory & Dynamics – Lets take a look Sharon McMahn – Gotta find another guy Flash Mckinley – I’ll reassure you Devotions – De Do Dop Dop Servicemen – I need a helping hand Passions – If you see my baby Cody Black – Mr Blue Executive Four - Gotta a good thing going Temptones - Girl I love you Groovettes – Think it over baby Tim Brown: Little Henry – Way of living Sonny Fishback – Heart breaking man Ted Wildon – I can’t take no more Orlons – Envy Bobby Day – Pretty little girl next door Gloria Howell – You’d better hurry up Ralph Graham – She just sits there Uptown Orchestra – Come go with me Springers – Nothing’s too good for my baby Cookie Jackson – Try love Rotations – Put another dime on D9 Swans – Nitty gritty city Imperial Cs – Someone tell her Cody Black – I’m slowly moulding Locations – Mr Diamond man John Purvis. Larry Hale – Once Spencer – Searchin’ for love Gene Woodbury – That’s not half bad Keni Lewis – Not the marrying kind Jimmy Church – Right on time Billy Woods – I don’t want to lose your love Joe Simon – The girl’s alright with me Monroe Taylor – Proud Guy Sharon Scott – Lock & key Don Ray – Born a loser Quotations – I don’t have to worry Joan Moody – Music to my ears Colin Wood. Whispers – Needle in a haystack Cal Green – Stormy Edwin Starr – Gonna keep on tryin’ til I win you love Billy Floyd – My oh my Spencer – My baby’s comin’ home Shirley Wahls – Why am I crying Sammy Ambrose – Welcome to dreamsville Sammy Sevens – Everybody crossfire Springfield Rifle – That’s all I really need Carl Spencer – Cover girl Diane Pane – What side your bread is buttered on Timi Yuro – Can’t stop running away Cheers, Shirley.

I got this email today... all you fine girls and boys need to contact this Lady... .. i really liked your site and would love to talk to you about the Northern scene. Were making a series for Channel 4 about UK soul and one of the programmes is focused on Northern Soul in the 70s and the its heyday at the Wigan Casino. We are particularly looking for great women to talk to so I wonder if you were Wigan regulars or if not perhaps you know other women who would be willing to help us with our research. Were keen to talk to soul boys too - so if you know any lively blokes who were around back in the day - please put me in touch with them too! As usual with telly were strapped for time so please get back in touch if you can. Good luck with the site and season greetings. Very best wishes Helen Littleboy Producer/director Diverse Production
