    Broughton Wings Club

Had a good night last saturday at Broughton, an old face from many years ago appeared through the door in the guise of John "Jacko" Jackson AKA the fighting Postman from Rhyl.a few people havnt seen him for over 26 years and it was nice to see Mark Speakmans face, and Garry Beatties, when jacko tapped them on the shoulder !! I used to go to Wigan with Jacko, and Ritchie "pants" Andrews who also made an appearance - (lovely to see you again mate ),along with Wuffer, Joey Dunlop, to name but a few. I stopped going to wigan in 78 and never saw jacko again until 2AM one morning in 1982 8,000 miles away from home in San Carlos Bay Falkland Islands -we were two hours away from landing on Blue Beach at 0400 hrs Zulu time and the battle for the Falklands was about to commence. I went into the messroom to get a last brew and a bite to eat-the place was packed with Marines all doing the same -having a last bite-when I spied him, big ugly git with a buttie stuffed in his gob Johhnie Jackson !! what the fu*k was he doing here?? We had both left the soul scene and joined up and of all the ships down there me and jacko ended up bumping into each other. (we nearly ended up getting buried together) We both shared a taste of hell together down there, and neither of us will forget it, nor the mates we left behind. Now 20 years on I have hooked up with him again -Jacko lives in bridgwater Somerset- he works for the benefits agency now, and Geoff Hollis is a dog warden down there !!! I am going to cala grand with jacko and geoff and his missus in october so may see some of you there. Hope the Springfield venue is a success, see you all there . 2. Birchfield Soul Nite - Widnes Well after last weekend, was half expecting a fairly mellow Friday nite. That was a mistake. Birchfield Recreation Club was the place and their monthly soul nite the event. Always on our regular list and always a fair old few make it across the border and the Mersey from the homeland. Our usual car load was dmsc co-thingy Steve T , Bangor Social Johnnie J, Hef and meself. After so many visits have finally sorted widnes traffic system out, and for once got there fairly early for us, say for us, cause as always missed the freebie, which was a very decent cd. Venue is in the sort of club house - you know the sort next to a football pitch, though a fairly big building, with half being a social club type bar and the other half event place, a fair sized floor, seats and tables round it, a busy bar at one end, espically busy at the 9.30-1030 £1 a pint hour. Normal 3 quid in, the end of night around 1 am, though no bar extension. Sounds wise, well the team of three Dave Truscott, Chris Penn and Biff do a great job here. And while they do look after all tastes, the main thrust to me is of quality, covering all styles, in a well good flow All know the usual pitfalls many soul nites can end up on, but gotta say no danger of that here, while normally a fairly mixed crowd, its always an good mixed crowd that responds to all the music. None of this "dont know it so must be crap", or people moaning cause they have to put up with a few records thats not their bag, everyone seems to just go there, have a good time and enjoy the music whether it be current venue plays, like Mack Starr, Ruby Jean, current popular floorfillers like Harvey and Jokers , R and B style sesions, 6ts sax jams, modern or well known classics. Reaction no matter what the style is always good, that to me along with the feel and the way they do the music makes this nite a regular return. The guest to-nite was a certain Steve Thomas, mentioned before, whos bookings diary is fast becoming a uk event guide and even got a few other signing ups on nite. Well he seemed to go down very well, keeping with the style and the feel, pushed out a great mix, one highlight bit to me was houston outlaws followed by delegates of soul, which worked well sing a long time or what. To his credit after someone requested a certain 45, which he didnt have with him, then when strangely enough he started getting quite a fair few requests for that very same 45, he dealt with all in a very professional and courteous style. Will leave it up to Steve to post up some of his interesting plays, though he said afterwards that he had many requests for that Marv Johnson UA track, Anyway a well enjoyable nite, think place was full at some stage as the "no entry - full " signs were out and about So for me, hats off to the team of three, if you are after a well friendly nite, with a crowd just into enjoying all styles of soul, get along, we always enjoy it and know many others do. May not hear a lot in press about this one, but that "full " sign, a fair few travellers, appreciative crowd and that after feel of a right old good nite out, just proves that no matter what occurs in the so called limelight, clubs like this are just getting on with things and soul fans are out having a right old good time and just enjoying the soul music. Nice one Next one with guest Carl Willingham, 26 July - seems like its going to be another "cant miss event" website - www.birchfieldpark.fanspace.com - sounds, info and all the gear 5 from Steve thomas t ed taylor -look out -top rank big dons rebillion-it was true-ethon enchantments -i,m in love with your daughter-faro sound masters- lonley lonley=julet delegates of soul-i,ll come running back-uplook

  8. Well got there in the end, a bit slower starting this time, but come midnight it was case of Monkey a go go, with the main room full and kicking. Second Room got off to a cracking first one, thanks to the efforts of the 4 guest second room djs And as always big thanks to all members who helped, supported, turned up and made the nite. A well lengthy view on nite is available.... ...hit that read more to read more Anyway finally me and Sue got up to hotel. Into the non stop sorting. Plain sailing - yeah sure. Shape of things to come, seems hotel had a fair few changes of staff, so everything that had sorted out in the last one was unsorted, and they werent eager to go back, plus as new not clued up on what we were about, ho hum ,second room needed fair bit of work, as manager had set it up so could use it for a christening the next day, so didnt really have the look for a sweaty den of hardcore 6ts soul, move tables, more sweat, move tables, then found eldest had borrowed the mixer but forgot to put it back in box, frantic phonecalling and favours finally sorted it. Speaker cable no good. Partner in crime Steve was late, more sweat.. People starting arriving, more sweat, curtains needed sorting as daylight, they had to be in crap order, playlists, lights, yeah think thats it, chance to taste hour old pint. On wind up session well cause of the messing around with me and Steve all over the place - the "monkey wind up" was being done by someone else, no offence to anyone and all that but one choice had even Sue looking amazed. As had strongly pushed the get in early and jump straight in quality on newsletter, was just looking at ceiling at this stage.Quick walk around, nearly slipped over on the dance floor, this was start of the icerink saga. But in between had the not enough bar staff scenario, eventually solved when manager came in. Last time, though made sure floor was polished first, had a few saying werent that good, dont know what the hotel had done, but this time it was a skating rink, this was a major problem early on, as was well dodgy, needed the ideal solution, orange juice was one given, sand another suggested, Steve showing his chef expertise threw salt all over the place, nah, even a suggestion of get levine in and then no one will want to use it, by now people had marked their spot threw something down and then refused to budge. Final solution was mop and hot water, which seemed to work a bit.Though if anyone has a proven soloution let us know . OK now about 9 30, and apart from those who thought a promoter meant general handyman, things were on the way up. Best blagger of the nite award went to the guy who told Sue , " allright Im Rob Thomas dj-ing" and thus got in free and led to a later "no thats not Rob Thomas " conversation Most adaptable punter - had a local woman, heard it was a soul nite, assumed to be motown nite, turned up, asked nicely why no temptations, once told checked out second room and now part of the malcolm woosley R&B fan club Most content person -Small Paul who as hasnt even got a computer isnt doing that bad for online mentions, says cheers to john p Most unusal punter 1- Carl W who turned down bookings for this nite so could attend event Most unusal punter 2 - The first ever person at the two events to ask for oldies Anyway got this far and not a mention of any of real action, well Phil Blacknell did the first guest spot at 840 opening in fine style after the monkey wind up (think this one was wrong word wind up:), followed by Ally Mayer who started off with a early soul acetate recently picked up from new york, the real Rob Thomas was on next , a cracking set, Guy H the main guest was up at 11 - Andy Rix doing the 12 -1 with yet another top of the range set Phil B finished the nite off with the monkey till you drop spot - which as a bit of a throwback to the chaos early on, also had the new manager first trying to close it at 1.am, then 1.15, and then finally throwing the lights on in a strop about 1.30 with Phil B failing in the attempt to slip just one more on Off course got all plays logged in head and all the running bout early on didnt affect me, will add soonest Not just the main room this time, but also the second room was on the go, dj duties split between, malcolm worsley - tim fletcher - carl lloyd- johnny jones - all selected to give a fair old balance of non-main room stuff - fresh revivals, little heards, R&B, early soul etc Students of second room scientology ( was it john p who put up article on it) may be interested to know our thoughts on it and how it went Had to give this a lot of thought as looked at modern option and to tell truth dismissed it as to us seemed just to be a "get more thru the door" and as never see that much interaction between rooms, espically modern to main room. Thought wouldnt add anything to event for the mainly 6ts fan which event is about So decided 60s - then what r&b? name is to some a put off for some reason, and as nearly everyone has their own idea of what R&B is, sacked it Oldies room ? - Nah defintely not, think thoughts on this was, not what event is about Collectors Room - Could work, but name would put some off End Choice - Other Side Of Street - Bit of a mix - said non main hall stuff inc all sorts 60s soul, bit hard to categorize espically the non-main hall term , but thinking being that if have varied styles djs should result in a worthwhile addition to the soul; fans nite, as thats what they come for End Result - Bit slow to kick off but when it did, yep it worked very well, fairly packed thru out nite, someone said more in than the modern room at lowtown which was funny in a nice way, few ups and downs in numbers.as nite went on But overall 100% success and know all djs got big thumbs up from members. Was a bit of concern with numbers as could always drag people from the main hall, but never a problem, with both busy did close it at 1215. as main effort always gonna be the last 1hr 15. Plus with room whole event moved up a notch as the other bar was now more availble and the venue had more depth rather than just the one main room. Well thats the rooms/djs covered ought else... yeah of course most important one the crowd, bit slower filling up than last time, but later on was close to the same as the first one. We were thinking after the first for numbers to improve a bit but pre-event feedback gave better idea, a lot said it was because of clashes, though almost impossible to avoid them this time, and to me makes sense to clash with a commerical oldies nighter than any proper northern event, would like to avoid Bretby but if we did for example then be clashing with Keele for next one, do know a few moved on afterwards to either Bretby or togetherness. Crowdwise well words getting around a lot of travellers from all over the place down south, midlands and so on and a fair few doing their second visit, crowd yet again made the nite, bit subdued earlier on but made up for it later. Always lots of good comments on the feel and the attitude of the crowd, friendly, up for it being just some of the descriptions. Photos - well watch out a roving digital camera was busy on the nite, so expect a few laughs, portraits, and all the rest on site Anyway think thats the end of this lengthy piece, overall after a shakey start, a few problems, and the nite picked up to a well enjoyable one, some well ouch sounds were being dished out by the regulars with the guests doing the buisness as well. The second room format seems to be a winner.Have another all star line up for next one Think most of the hiccups were ironed out after the first hour or so. Apoligies if any of them had a bad effect on your nite, think most were due to the having new staff, The manager apoligies for the floor, again it was his first northern one, and think said floor was ideal for ballroom. He said that will repeat the drinks promotion at the next one in recognition of the problems Big thanks as always from all the Monkey Team to all members who supported the event, and all those who have helped with event, spread the word and flyers and as we say without you there be no monkey Next one is 28 Sep Note: All DMSC members feel free to pass on your views of last nites event, enjoyed it? suggestions? points? and so on We thrive on feedback!! Just hit that comments

We arrived with the venue having over 100 already in and it was only 8.30pm! Steve Thomas was keeping the deck warm and top notch sound had the floor filled a credit to him so early on. 12. Heres a few bits of news thats all Monkey related. Know a lot of DMSC members went to both events last year and are looking forward to doing them both again. Prestatyn Weekender 28 FEB 2003 Well the buzz is buzzing even louder, recent going ons have just proved the fact that this one is an event run by soul fans for soul fans, advance bookings are continuing streaming in, flyers are out, and it looks like that this is going to be even better than last years one. If youre up for a weekend that has top of the range facilities, two main rooms - northern and modern plus a new addition - the room at the top - Mr Ms revival and spectaculars in the Old Vic, top live guests, and much much more and most importantly that is run by SOUL fans for SOUL fans. Well this is the place ......you all know the score! Llandudno Connoisseurs Weekend As all Monkey members who did this last year know, if youre into quality rare soul then get to this. Not a big full scale major event as above, but soul wise its a major quality event. Was a great friendly atmosphere. Check the line up out, and jump quick. A few words from the promoters - After the last successful weekender we quickly decided to run it again next year. In the spirit of co-operation, we checked with the Prestatyn Weekender promoters about dates, and sorted things out so that we werent running on the same dates. So, were going back to The Ormscliffe Hotel, on The Promenade, Llandudno, on the 7th, 8th, and 9th March, 2003. For those that werent there last year, the hotel is a three star hotel, with ensuite bathrooms in every room. The accommodation offered is either single, double, or twin bed rooms and due to the success of the last event we have been able to hold the prices the same as before. Therefore, the cost of the weekender is either £75.00 with Breakfast, or £65.00 without, per person. This is for accommodation on the Friday and Saturday nights. At the last weekender it was intended that we finished at 5.00 pm on the Sunday and all went home. What happened was that quite a lot of people booked with the hotel for an extra night, so the music actually finished at 3.30 am on the Monday morning. The downstairs room will again have a policy of Sixties rarities and unknowns, whilst upstairs will be a mixture of everything, This time, because we know we are going to using the upstairs lounge this year, it has also meant that the number of places for the weekender can be increased slightly. Both rooms have a bar, and relatively cheap drinks for a hotel, and very obliging bar hours. Our policy is still to have the best DJs in the country, playing the best records in the country. So far the DJs confirmed are as follows: Butch, Keith Money, Dave Rimmer, Roger Banks, Bob Hinsley, Andy Dyson, Chris Anderton, Derek Pearson, Chic, Cliff Steele, Stevie Z, John Weston, and John Mills. If you are interested, and want to reserve your place for this weekender, check out the booking form on the Soulful Kinda Music website and where to send your £15.00 deposit off. If you need any more information please ring either of us for a chat. John Mills: 01204 413973 Stevie Z: 0161 764 3995 Posted by admin on Jul 02, 2002 - 05:52 PM comments? | |

  15. Big thanks to Danny for posting this in ..great stuff, informative , enjoyable , top dog! Northern Soul in Dublin is still alive. Sleepless Nights has taken up the mantle and ensures our growing family meet at least monthly. Add 2 successful allniters and 2002 will reflect that the rot has stopped and better days might be round the corner for our City. Raining for last few days, a few emails and a Paul Davis phone call before 10am ask the question is it still on tonight, "course it is" I tell them all defiantly....hey better check that Doyles isnt under 2 feet of water as its only yards from the river Liffey. A quick phone call confirms that my spoofing is rewarded this time. Friday night dos mean Im hoping to finish work early, not always possible in the courier business and again tonight its a big rush, roads closed, ok I will drive in, only have 2 pints and drive home (great intentions) Some roads impassable I get there about 9.15 thankfully lads already there shifting tables, music on etc (thanks John, Karl, Ross, Brian) Our first hour is a "free decks" slot, tonight Brian, johns brother plays a great intro/chill out set, ridding us of our tensions and getting everyone into a soul groove. Ross on only his 2nd dj slot ever officially starts things with some good xover. A "new" guy on the Dublin scene, Mike McNulty or Macca from Derby (MFD) turns up with some records and asks if we can play them later! Macca has been busy replacing the sounds he sold/mislaid over the years. We look at the cardboard packages posted from the US with mouths agape. Macca has just travelled back from somewhere in the middle east via Mayo where he now lives and booked a hotel in Dublin to be here tonight, we all spontaneously agree that we reduce our slots to 40 minutes and let Macca spin his own tunes. MFD wants to buy me a beer, I buy him one back... and the promise of only 2 pints goes straight out the window, I have a really low temptation level. MFD spins his sounds, some great oldies, the place is filling up and that feel good factor has hit us. Next on flows Karl Mitchell one of the resident three, Pip follows (this guy like the night itself keeps improving). These fellas make my job easy and everyone is up and dancing to the x the board set. John Dunne as usual finishes the night in his own unique way. From his playlist you will see that Chaka Khans "Im every woman" features? Maybe not a purists choice but most of the people attending are only at their 1st, 2nd or 3rd Northern Night, and the odd "disco" track helps break down barriers. It is great to see these kids hear and dance so enthusiastically to Northern for the first time, something thats commented on by overseas soul brothers/sisters attending nights in Dublin. Our intention being that Northern is delivered in an enjoyable way. Not always (but usually) on the original label, re issues and the odd boot allowed (we dont have a cd player, big scene or easy access to vinyl) Already we see the spin off with new collectors and an increasing awareness of the music from the requests received, this in turn will raise standards. 18. Lowton Civic Friday 08 Aug Strange days in North Wales, last month has involved all sorts. Lifts failing to turn up for the Dome, plans to get to Wilton failing, people finding themselves at home on Saturdays nites watching tv with bemused families, a downward trend in vinyl going ons, reports of people staring at a phone all nite that never rings and so on. Now some think that all these strange going ons may have something to do with fact that a certain Holyhead person has just switched jobs and now spends 30 days stretches on a ship sailing round the British Isles. Well the theorists seemed to have won the argument, as it was the first weekend that Stevie T was back on shore, and as at 9 o clock on a Friday I found myself going down A55, in a well worn out chugging minibus, that apparently gets used by a slaughter house team in week, which may explain the stains inside all over the roof and a funny smell. No slight ease back into it, myself and Shane (who was home from Manalia on holiday) did the mandatory half hour wait, a wtf look at state of the minibus, and then it was down the A55. Two hours later, a few wrong turns, we had people from all over the place in bus, all stops on the North Wales Coast, cars catching us up and people jumping in,even picked up a new recruit from Lowton, refreshment included a bottle of wine won at a far off Viaduct, yes it was business as normal. With the event being a mini-niter at Lowton, the first time for a few months for me, could say were definitely in the mood for a good night, we tumbled out, boxes, flyers going all over the place. With another 4 or 5 cars from North Wales was a fair old contingent. Got to say always enjoy Lowton, always have a laugh and a good crack, plus the dj line up as with most events attend more often than not seems to be a good one, the days of in one door to main hall, then driven straight back out by “big name” djs who think “just a little misunderstanding” is what people traveled a 100 odd miles for, doesn’t seem to happen anymore. Place was packed, knew Ian Cuncliffe was on, disappointed to find out he had to do a early set, so missed out. Popped in the modern room and it was kicking, a big crowd, good buzz, quick look for wanted new releases, quick birthday greetings to Pete known as Bangor’s modern soul man , who was celebrating his 40th birthday! Quick word with Roger W out and about as a punter and enjoying himself, quick try to flog Airtight 45 to him, but no joy due to his no more vinyl stance, a laugh at how when he did “All Era Room” at Monkey all the northern types wanted to clock him, and shocked when he was not a 6ft 6 permed hair ex mecca type with horns Plus the way he managed to steer 70 people from the modern list to visit Dave Lucas folded arms photo, but managed somehow to make them miss this “fetching” photo almost right next to it view Modern room what caught was definitely buzzing. Down corrider to R and B room, Big Mick was on and given out some quality r n b,.Steve T had a spot in their later on, me and Johnny J made the most of this as this gave us great ammo when continuing our ongoing banter battle:) But just joking, as always dished out some great selections. Main room was going strong, nice surprise to catch Soul Sam doing a set, but only caught last bit, stuff such as “If cant say anything good….” Marvin Gaye "come get to this" a bit of 2003 gear, finished set off playing flip of Morris Chestnut which in his usual enthusiastic way he just raved about. Tim Brown up next and gave out some great stuff, Vanguards, memory says an instrumental with last minute miracle/Motown flavour, Derek Martin and Flashback. Travels and trips between other rooms and even a trip out meant not much more main room details, memory says Andy D doubled decked with Dean A, was told Alex Jones was on, but not sure, caught some great stuff from Bob Hinsley, pure joy to hear Detroit Sounds Of Friction, plus stuff like Oz and Sperlings all sounded good. A lot of record sellers and dealers there with a wide selection of stuff on offer, best laugh was when was offered a cover up in some deal, it all clicked together, was sure heard a certain guest dj at 100 playing old North Wales fav King Curtis Foot Padding part 2 on atco, but when asked him, he gave me some story about it being Jr Walker “Across the track” on soul, which as it is a basically a jr walker rip off and my untrusty ears thought was plausible, but when found out it was a actual "cover" all came clear. Soul Sam was the next victim of my attempts to flog spare Airtight 45. And even got him listening but all was in vain, so can still pounce on it now. listen Sam passed on that next weeks Broughton guest is Arthur Fenn and event is going firm on every third Saturday, which fits in well with Goldbourne Niter for us as on way, the cheap prices both on door and beer make it a good 2 event nite. Think confirmed details for the 7 th time with Andy Dyson regarding future events, this time we got as far as writing the date down.. Overall had a most enjoyable time, was to me a great nite, great crowd, atmosphere, the best one had there for a while.

  20. Orginally posted in news section, counts etc moved across Review of Prestatyn - Midnight Hour Northern and Modern Soul weekender 2002 Well another weekend and another weekender! After the fabulous Conniseurs Weekend at Llandudno last weekend, it was time to yet again get act together and get on the road to carry out the short trip up coast to the Pontins Holiday Centre at Prestatyn to catch the first ever Midnight Hour Northern and Modern Soul weekender. Was it as billed a "Soul Event Of The Year" ? Was the apperance of Tony Middleton and Ray Pollard a "one to remember"? Well going to have to hit that read more to find out !! A just "had to leave"early report. Stuff at home meant had to miss the final night, so while still fresh in my mind thought I give my quick view on the weekender. As always just my own views, agree or disagree......get them in Put red pens away. No elaborate writing style intended and no care or thought taken, just writing it as it comes out so apologies to those students of English grammar amongst us Well another weekend and another weekender! Gotta say after last weekend where my ears were subject to 72 hours of the most concentrated amount of quality rare soul they have had to handle, the thought of 2 more niters and a dayer to get through had me in a slight concern of rare soul overload. However these concerns turned out to be well misplaced proving you cant have too much of a good thing. .Half a hour later found meself in the middle of Pontins, in quality accommodation with the gang of five (from all over uk we usually meet up every few months for quality events, as last one was CSC at Lowton had fair bit of taking mick to get through). Admission was straight forward and no hassle at all with getting sorted and finding it. Quite impressed with rooms, was in club class, all mod cons and everything you need including free ear plugs and cleaners!. Unpacked, thought bit of relaxation coming on, and then 5 minutes later found myself "volunteering" to help Steve Fletcher of Wire FM with his radio hour. The format was an interview with Brian Rae concerning the Charly Cd series which were as you know the pioneers of cd releases. My role was to act as "sound engineer" which went quite smooth once carried out the online test of sussing out which cd eject button was which "yeah thats the one playing now" and only one wrong track which was Brians fault (of course). The interview, well as anyone who knows Brian can guess, it was very informative loads of info, facts, trivia and background stories on the actual cds, and also the tracks and the artists. The shows continued throughout the whole weekend piped into all the rooms via the tv, featuring many guests, all styles of soul and some great radio "moments". Rob Messer tied up in a chair with a plastic bag over him, somehow still managing to cue and announce 45s being one. First niter was a cracker, as said earlier in preview, it was claimed this venue could have been custom built for a weekender, and here was the proof. Can remember it getting used a lot in 80s for funk type weekenders, and has also been used for Motown weekenders in the past, but think be right in saying first time used for Northern event.Got in there about 10 after all of us failed the intelligent test of looking door properly. Main hall was massive with quality dance floor that was getting well used. Some have said it was a bit slippy but there were some talc fiends knocking round. Tables were already filled up and a good buzz was going around. Bar area, first thing to find out was opening hours! "Errrr there are none, we have a 23 hour licence" was the encouraging reply Pint of lager was round about 2.30, so not that bad Service seemed quick through out. Record bar area was next to the bar area and very spacious. with many of the main dealers present along with "accessories" such as Roxys, Badge makers, Manifesto and so on. Seems from what I was told that the busy times of vinyl wheeling and dealing were in the afternoon. Next to this was large amusement arcade, which you had to get through to the modern room. Now this was a surprise, been conditioned at recent venues to modern rooms that are small, often seems as a bit of a afterthought. This one was massive, bigger than many main hall rooms. Everyone walking in stopped at entrance and did a double take. Rough guess of 300 odd in there, as always find the modern room always varies depending on dj on, when we visited was in a sort of main hall modern set. along with a few soul sam type plays. Spent a fair bit of time there as at this time main hall was going thru a oldies phase. Back to main hall and sound system spent most of time in main hall right up the top end next to speaker. Sound system to my worn out ears was quality and could hear sounds played clean and clear in bar and record room. Was a problem on Saturday nite after live artists with the settings but was sorted. Sounds/DJs - Well big location, many options, and so a bit hard to keep track of who did what when and where, list of all should be at end, apologies to modern crew but sounds and modern djs recognition bit dodgy, as always if you were there and can pass word on, please do. Main hall, well not really a "best spot" list but the three spots caught all off and enjoyed were Andy Rix, Dave Rimmer, and Chico, through out the nite heard quality sets but was moving all over the place. Sample list of sounds be at the end, but got to say the "urghh what is that " award goes to that 70s version of "I got the fever" ,did not enjoy at all and sure dj said manufactured. Unfortunately it got played twice the following nite. Style wise fairly balanced blend of something for everyone, the oldies orientated spots were no big problem as many other locations to go to. While the quality rare soul sets were just that... quality Crowd wise thing around 3 ish was peak ? Fell off thru the early hours, shame as some quality sounds were being pushed out. But more than likely due to "sensible" people saving themselves for the big nite. Got thru to around 8 then back to room, most of day was spent sorting out body clock and missed the "soul nite showcases" that were held in the main room, featuring djs from some of the uks top soul nites, should have been, Lincoln Soul Nite, Dublin Soul Nite, The Britt, Tonys, Asworth and Lowton. Main Event was Saturday night and to me the bit been looking forward to, which was the two live major guests - Ray Pollard and Tony Middelton due on at 11-30. Planned things around that, a few flyers to dish out, roped in mike hump and andy d as flyer team, complete with fake Yorkshire and cockney accents to match the flyers. Got through the odd pint or two, and then 11.30 come up, time for the live act. Backing band seemed well up to the task, and as someone pointed out they were actually acting like a "backing" band. Lot of laughs here as the keyboard player bore a resemblance to a certain northern dj. Andy Rix was doing the MC-ing, Tony Middleton was on first and out he come delivering some classy stuff - no prizes for guessing two - To The Ends Of The Earth and Paris Blues.Song up next, well was told the reason he picked this was cause he wanted to do something with a Welsh connection. So it was his version of Tom Jones "Its not unusual". (choice brought to mind another Tom Jones connection the film Whats Up Pussy cat where Tony M sang a track on soundtrack called My little red book). After Tony out come Ray Pollard, going by the programme we worked out that as he lost a arm in the Korean war his minimum age to be at least 68, unbelievable as looking and hearing at him seemed a whole lot younger. Songs delivered included This time, Somebody Elses Sweetheart, Its a Sad Thing and of course.... The Drifter Wow pure magic to me, but best was yet to come, after a bit of banter and messing around, both come out and treated us to one of those magic moments you will remember for rest of your life. Both doing a incredible duet of "I Have Faith In You", to me the atmosphere, timing and delivery all made it an incredible moment. Definitely the highlight of the event to me. The critics gave Ray Pollard the winning vote, voice performance wise, though to me both highly entertaining, and while the whole act must have been rehearsed fully, it still had a air of spontaneously which added to the enjoyment. Overall really enjoyed the whole act. Choice and the amount of songs was about right, the whole "feel" of it was tremendous, no over the top rigid production, just two great soul singers delivering classic soul nnd got to mention the "I have faith in you" duet again, inspired choice, and worked really well. Plus what summed up the whole spirit of event, throughout the weekend both stars were freely available to chat with, sign autographs and so on. Often popping up everywhere, bit of a shock when having a "sort you out" coffee to find Tony M on next table, this was typical of the whole event, no restrictions on videos, no over organised staged events.Just reinforced the feeling that this was an event for Soul fans put on by Soul fans, and as mate said it was also a chance to pay our respects and thanks to two great soul singers. Well what could follow that?? Try this for size the next five hours consisted of a DJ line up in following order Roger Banks, Andy Rix, Rob Thomas, Mark Bicknell then Carl Willingham Ouch, quality and then some or what, ended up doing a fair bit of catching up as a lot of mates from all over the uk there, and had a right old laugh. Rob Smith finished the nite off with final set that went well over the 8 o clock planned end and only finished after the cleaners formed a protest group. Overall a top nite Saturday, that duet being the highlight, with the quality sets underlining the fact that it was a top nite. Well as had some pre-planned stuff to do on Sunday at home, that if missed would be writing this in ward 10 of local hospital (as wife warned me), had to get away so missed the midday - 1 am Monday session, if you were there pass on how it went. Overall cloudy view the day after the event, well weekend to me was sheer entertainment, live artists set ....wonderful, sounds - some well top quality sets were dished out, the old "something for everyone" pops up again and reckon was achieved with a good balance of rarities/oldies on offer, the enormous modern room seemed to be getting well used, the facilities and organisation - gotta say highest quality, didnt spot any hiccups, accommodation was well on the ball, and the venues were outrageously good. Crowd - think capacity was 5000, at times there were 1000+ in and the venue handled it easy, no queues or ought. Numbers thinned a bit around 4 ish, but still a fair few doing the early morning shift on Sunday morning. Crowd wise, was a mixed crowd from all over UK, as said met up with people from all over London, Yorkshire, NWest, SE, SW in fact all corners. Large amount of North Wales gang in, after last two weeks think North Wales coast is on flood alert as may sink if it gets any more quality rare soul heaped on it. Sounds - well after 72 hours, many quality sounds, but after tapping out all above will give listing a miss, but will just mention the one record that is knocking around my head still Andy Rix Play - switch around-wallie hawkins and rose marie mccoy Final Verdict So it was billed as a "soul event of the year" did it live up to that? Well from my weekend experience, have got to say it lived up to that billing. Everyone I spoke to at event and since have gave it a big thumbs up ( 70s Fred Pontins pun intended). Some said it was the best faculties and organisation that they have come across. And as for entertainment and value wise, well entertainment wise well as you can guess by above I was thorough entertained. Value wise, well 30 odd quid for all the above, even though missed the last 12 hours got to say looking back ..a bargain. To finish off think following sums it up, one main factor which made the event for me, was the overall feeling of the whole event was ... quite simply the impression I got was it was a soul event put on for soul fans by soul fans. And everything reflected this, no over the top commericalism, no crappy 70s style politics, no djs gobbing off, no heavy handed security, no egos, no staged events. Just a Soul Event for Soul fans - simple but effective!! Extra Bit - Dates for next one are out, and have been told bookings are already at the 3 figure point, definte artists are not confirmed but word is could be two jaw dropping names and do mean jaw dropping. Big thanks from me to all responsible for weekend - The Midnight Hour Crew - Rob Wigley, John Poole, Fish, Rob Thomas, Mark Fletcher Know there was a fair few un-offical people helping out with various things - Steve Fletcher and Bernie OBrien were just two and am sure plenty of more who deserve credit but unfortunately havent names. The Djs - Andy Rix, Rob Thomas, Roger Banks, Dave Rimmer, Carl Willingham, John Parker, Kitch, Dave Raistrick, Pat Brady, Mark Bicknell, Simon Hunt,Chico, Kevin Thomas, Neil Rushton, Mick H, Rob Smith, Bernie O Brian, Jez Barlow, Carl and Joe (Dublin) Mick Boyle, Glyn Sisson, Scotty and Co, Andy Riley Modern - Rob Wigley, Andy Taylor, Chris Anderton, Mick Farrar, Steve Hobbs, Fish, Cliff Steele, Ivor Jones, Yogi H, Adam, The Modern Live acts - Shabazz and Gary desEtages And of course Tony Middleton and Ray Pollard

  23. Northern Soul Top 500 Written by Kev Roberts, published by Goldmine/Soul Supply Ltd in 2000. “Born in the ultra-cool Mod clubs of the late-sixties with names like The Blue Orchid, King Mojo and The Twisted Wheel, the sound was Motown, Stax, Atlantic and their imitators – American Soul music with an express train beat that found a spiritual home in England’s North and a name… ‘Northern Soul’. Driven by incredible sounds from Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York & the West Coast, it grew and developed at The Torch, Blackpool Mecca, The Catacombs until it exploded at Wigan’s Casino club. Now in its second wave, Northern Soul’s infectious beat is once again spreading to pack dancehalls across the country. From connoisseur Soul classics to the pop-stomp of the late 70s this book is the definitive chart of the 500 top sounds that put Northern Soul on the map”. “What actually constitutes a Northern 45 is open to conjecture. My gut reaction is to focus on what has been played at ‘Northern Soul’ all nighters rather than what is technically ‘Soul’ music”. “In the final analysis this chart is derived from overall long term popularity.” The book lists the current national average retail prices for each record, as determined by top UK dealer Anglo American in Todmorden, I’ve only listed the price when it’s £300 or more, just for interest, (this, of course, varies depending on supply & demand, and the prices listed here relate to the year the book was published). Official issue means the general release as opposed to the demo, (which is often much more common, in the case of rare records). If no particular issue is given, there is only one exists, be it a promo or official issue. There is a ‘Bubbling Under’ Top 100 that follows the main Top 500, and an essential CD listing. List is in order of popularity, by artist-song-original label-price. Northern Soul Top 500 1. Wilson, Frank – Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) (Soul) (£15,000) 2. 24. Soul In The City All-Dayer 04 June 02 Soul In The City All-Dayer Bank Holiday 4th June Extra Jubilee bank holiday? OK lets have an All - Dayer S.I.T.C. has been going since December 2001& what started as a one off Christmas drink with the lads while playing a bit of Northern has become a regular monthly event on the London calender. We are mainly an oldies based venue but do try to use a bit of imagination as can be seen by our playlists on various outlets i.e. KTF Soultalk etc. as well as websites like Soul Source. We operate the first Tuesday of every month upstairs at The Old Blue Last pub in Great Eastern Street EC2, free entry, beer £2 a pint & with the first Tuesday of June a bank holiday it was too good an opportunity to miss. Apprehension over numbers, from me at least was unheeded, from 4pm healthy numbers were inside & the place was heaving by 5pm. A few travellers were present but the majority of attendees were regulars from the main London venues making it more like a party than anything else The atmosphere was superb, very laid back but at the same time up for anything that was played. So much so,even some of our “seasoned “guest DJ’s commented on it. The music from start till finish was varied & valid as was Martin “12pint” Thomson who started the day off brightly & finished it with a slightly glazed look about him!( as did most of us) A big thanks to all our guest Dj’s Andy Faulkner, Alan Handscombe,Simon Bridger,Rob Messer, Nick Brown who did his bit for the Jubilee by playing Queen of Fools & Kenny Burrell who chained his record box to a very unstable coat rack & also managed to clock up a very reasonable 2200 miles driving around the country Djing that weekend! DJ rosta was completed by SITC regulars Paul Mckay & myself Dave Greenhill. Some fantastic music was played, brilliant atmosphere & to top it all Helen turned up with a huge bag of assorted sandwiches ! Shame she didn’t dish out asprins for the following days headaches. Next SITC is on 2nd July, for a great night with the cheapest booze at a London venue get yourself down there!
