Last ever Tonys As well behind with many things, if dont do it here it never get done so all a bit its rough and ready... Anyway looking back at it the last nite at Tonys was a very good un, think somewhere about 3-400 turned up for this final nite. Popped in to an earlier all-dayer at Lowton which meant we were well up in the mood. Having a laugh we were talking about what memorabilia we were going to rob, then later saw 3 or 4 people carrying out one of the red easy settee things that used to line dancefloor, cracked us up as had visions of a well smart front room, with one of these right in middle, just think about what they might find when checking out whats fell down the sides. (later found out had actually paid for it beforehand so wasn't a case of check out their neck) Someone counted up at least 70 odd from North Wales Coast lurking around, which is a bit scary, (the counting that is!) but gives an idea of how things are. One of our lot almost (or did he make it? never saw the final result) won the privledge of being the last ever person to get chucked out of Tonys, a shocking tale involving Ribenna and all sorts. Sounds billed line was as below Bob Hinsley Mick H Carl Willingham Pip Kev Murphy Pete Coulson Mark Morgan Plus Regs And Upstairs Banging Away Dave Hawkins Eddie Barton Davie Brown Paul Baldwin All was as it always is at Tonys, always to me had its own sort of taste and the djs all dished out what the crowd wanted. From latest sounds, revivals and those Tonys regular always hears. 8 come and that was that, no more Tonys, after so many years of regular events has to be a shame, many mentioned it was a shame that recent nites couldnt have had more nites like the last one. Still live goes on, know the promoting team reckons the new venue at LUX Club Wigan (memberships were handed out on the nite) is going to be a winner. Did have up a few years ago video clips from the Grey Whistle visit in early 80s, shout if needs dictate and will dig. After event thoughts Still smiling at the thought of those carrying the settee down the road as the sun rises over ............... Other thoughts No more doing the 5 times around the one way circuit. No more early morning walks round Blackburn trying to remember where car is parked. What is playing that track from four heartbeasts film about , not one of my favs by a long way Best quote about Tonys "You know what you are going to get and thats what you get...simple!"

Have had some info passed on about Saturday nite Heard Soul Sams and Brian Ellis monthly Broughton event was a good un. A good crowd in, packed and with both residents doing it, plus guests Kenny Burrell and Steve Thomas giving out top well mixed set seems venue was on top form Goldbourne Niter seems to have been a cracker, been told packed 300+ ?, all djs on best form. word seems to be getting round about this niter. Appears a big buzz on next Monkey on Friday, plus theres about 30-40 so far on the Monkey bus to bank holiday big one Zanzibars/Locarno Brumland next Sunday If out and about feel free to post up views, site needs it!

New Releases for MAY 2003 from Ace Records (Our apologies for the delay this month - due to injured designer!) Hit read more for the latest all styles cd releases from Ace Cds Mod, Blues, RnR, etc etc LOOKING GOOD - Mod Club Classics - CDBGPD 153 (Also on vinyl - BGP2 153) "Oh hell! This is this years touch of self indulgence", Dean Rudland compiler of many a dancefloor friendly compilation, both here and at previous places of fitful employment such as Blue Note and Acid Jazz, is trying to explain his latest BGP release. The title Looking Good: Mod Club Classics you would think explains it all, but as this is very close to his heart hes babbling on like a 15 year old school girl with a Westlife poster. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdbgpd153.html> more THE COMPLETE METEOR ROCKABILLY&HILLBILLY RECORDINGS - CDCH2 885 OK, youve got a choice here. On the one hand you could buy THE COMPLETE ROCKABILLY&HILLBILLY RECORDINGS double-CD containing both sides of all 19 rare and wonderful singles from the legendary Meteor label of Memphis. On the other hand, you could decide to hunt down the original 78s or 45s instead. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdch2885.html> more DANA GILLESPIE / Staying Power - CDCHD 891 Ace are excited this month to be celebrating Dana Gillespies fortieth year in the entertainment industry with the release of a stunning new album, STAYING POWER. Dana, who has been a strong presence in the world of music, has shown no sign of resting on her laurels in recent years. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdchd891.html> more THE LAURIE RECORDS STORY VOL 1 - CDCHD 933 When Laurie Records opened for business in 1958, its founders could not have foreseen how crucial their role in the history of rocknroll would prove to be. Formed by brothers Bob and Gene Schwartz along with Eliot Greenberg and Allen Sussell, the company was initiated as an outlet for Dion&the Belmonts, unknowns from the Bronx. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdchd933.html> more B.B. KING / My Kind of Blues - CDCHM 881 Fans of vintage B.B. King who are still picking themselves off the floor or ceiling after THE VINTAGE YEARS 4-CD box set (ABOXCD 8) shouldnt change into clean clothes just yet. Ace has begun the next phase of its campaign to reissue his prime 1950s and 1960s work for the Bihari brothers labels. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdchm881.html> more B.B. KING / Wails - CDCHM 882 The second release in our extensive CD reissue series of B.B. Kings LPs for the Crown label between 1957 and 1963, with bonus tracks including previously unissued material. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdchm882.html> more HADDA BROOKS / Swingin The Boogie - CDCHM 889 The early response to Aces new mid-priced "10 Inch CD" series has been heartening, to say the least. The good people of Collectorland seem to have latched onto the idea in a big way, and already there has been no shortage of suggestions for worthy future contenders for the "10-inch" treatment. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdchm889.html> more THE WAILERS / At The Castle /&Company - CDWIKD 228 Bobby "Blue" Bland, James Brown, Freddy King: the Wailers all had that roots music imbedded in us, we played black music but white people thought it was ours. It was our interpretation of it. When we leaned into that stuff, it was probably after Rich Dangel had been in the service and picked up on it. Rich was the driver there, he was a real music person and he absorbed and he learned. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/cdwikd228.html> more BLUESVILLE - Original Blues Classics Sampler - OBCCD 3712 While the fabulous Fantasy catalogues primacy in the jazz field is widely acknowledged, the magnitude of its blues holdings is less well known. This sampler should help rectify that situation: it focuses principally on the Prestige and Bluesville catalogues, with highlights from late 50s/early 60s sessions by major artists including Lightnin Hopkins, Sunnyland Slim, Jesse Fuller, Otis Spann, Lonnie Johnson, and Memphis Slim. <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/gotrt/apr03/obccd3712.html> more Produced by <http://www.acerecords.co.uk/index.html> Ace Records Ltd To be removed from these mailings please click "reply" to this email and enter "remove" in the subject box

Details of an informative article on the legendary Shrine label One of the DMSC regular dj team not only manages to entertain big style at Lowton over the weekend with partners in crime and DMSC regular dj Rob Thomas and John Poole He also helps spread the word with news of a new lengthy informative article on the legendary Shrine label. Which has been published on the website of major newspaper Washington Post Link to Washington Post article is no longer active - see comments below for updated link Washington's Lost Soul By David Segal May 11, 2003 The band is drunk. Not falling-down drunk, but more than tipsy, and it's only midnight, which means the band will soon be loaded. Edgewood Studios on K Street is packed with musicians and well-wishers, including Bo Diddley, who lives nearby. And over in a corner stand the Cavaliers, a five-man vocal group and the stars of this session, here to record a rowdy, 2 1/2-minute R&B track called "Do What I Want." It's the autumn of 1966, and this is the Cavaliers' last chance. Every member of the Washington group is about 30 years old, which is borderline past-it in the pop business. The group knows that if "Do" doesn't chart, the dream of singing and touring full time is doomed. But it's hard to worry tonight. There's a party mood at Edgewood: The musicians, more soused by the hour, keep fumbling the tempo, and to give the song some roadhouse ambiance, the crowd is whooping and shouting through each take. A couple of weeks later, a local label called Shrine Records releases "Do What I Want."...
