Fancy a hot and Soulful night out in Spain!!!!!!! Well look no further. On the 2nd of November 2003 at Chaplins Night club in Spain we are organising a northern soul night. The night as come about because a mate of mine started playing a few CDs in a bar he works in. People started asking what is this wonderful music! A mixture of ex pats and locals have said it would be great to have northern night and so we now going to give it a try. Calella is about ½ hour from Barcelona. The venue hold about 500 and will open at 9.30 till 3.00. Music policy will be across the board , top allnighter sounds, R&B, Modern & crossover, oldies from the wheel, torch, mecca&the casino. Entrance is 5 euros and the first drink is free!!! Already the night is creating a buzz in Spain, it would great to see support from soul fans from all over Europe. If the night is successful the idea is that a northern soul bar could be a establish bringing over british DJs to play. This Friday sees yet another DMSC "Soul At The Social " event at Bangor. A regular event held monthly at Bangor Citys social club run by Johnny J and offering a nite of all styles good time northern, missed last months one (first one missed in two years) but been told it was a cracker with a larger turnout inc many travellers. Guests this time are Chico and Karl Rhodes along with regulars Johnny J and meself should be a good one know I always enjoy them, £3 in 8 - late, all styles northern on offer

Weekend View Jun 2003 100 Club and This Thing Of Ours A rushed view on weekend, 8.10am on a Saturday and got out of door only 10 mins late, picked up Ritchie and Ann, no sign of Dick John ( found out later hadnt finished Friday nite off yet) and set off. Was going to be a special one, the alldayer "This Thing Of Ours" due to the recent sad news, being a "Celebration of Randys Life and Music" and along with the 100 Club being on after as well it was one of those must gos. As Ritchie was making a return to scene of some of his past going ons, involving tales of vinyl, shoeshops and all-sorts, and for me a first visit to that far off capitol since last year it seemed was going to be a break from the old routine. As always things got off to a good start, set off , 1 hour later was back in Llandudno doing a quick car swap. Dont ask. Unexpectedly the rest of journey went fine, got down there quick found pub first time. Settled down for 10 hours of all-dayer, just a quick brief bit as more posted on site. Lots of catch ups, meet ups, and good to meet at lasts was going on, especially all the "online" lot who use this site. Outside the event was creeping into the high street, the southern sun was fierce (for us from more temperate climes), the beer flowed and the event was kicking. By now right old atmosphere was going, the dancefloor inside was busy, pub packed and a constant stream of djs kept music flowing, and as beer was flowing, was most enjoyable. By now after over 8 hours of the event things were just a bit hazy, our plans to get to 100 club swung in and was time to nip down to 100. As said in other post, many thanks go out to all who were involved with this event, with the sad news of Randy departure in everyone's mind, the way event went was a credit to all involved. Thanks After the dayer it was a quick jump to central London, quick as could be if take into accounts our tour of east London, all due to a forced police detour leaving us at mercy of inner London traffic signs. All we wanted was a sign saying London central, instead the whole city was against us, we ended up in all sorts of places, dead ends in inner London estates. Was just one of them nights, even taxi drivers and garage blokes were at it, giving us wrong directions. Eventually and I mean eventually ended up round the back of 100 parking. Been a fair while since last visit to 100 club, and have to say as soon as walking thru door realised what had been missing. Straight away could pick up that buzz. Down stairs and place was packed, quick look round and after getting over shook of first no Dave Rimmer in place (did they trade him in for air conditioning) then Johnny T greeting me in a very frightening way! Though first passed on good news that a great big wad of cash took from the Valatone event was passed on to the fund. Nice one. Had a quick stop and take it all in and it felt good. Bumped into fellow Llandudno renegade Christian and also Dick john had made it after all. Guest djs on nite were Mick H, Marco S and Neil Jones, with regs Butch. Mick Smith and of course Ady himself. Think right in saying nite was split up into 30 min sets, Great stuff from Mick H, stuff like Imp Cs Nu-Rons Camaros etc Mick said will pass on full playlist later, Marco S started one sets off with announcement no r n b, no x-over , just stompers and did just that with great set, Neil Jones think pushed out 3 sets, never been to his Bury event so dont know how typical it was but many popular sounds being pushed out. The regs pushed out great stuff, Butch dished out likes of the always so good to hear cover up Eric Lomax, the sounds better and better each time, great Jean Carter I Want to Know, Mellow Souls, Ritchie Adams Flashback and so on A first hear for me other version of Emanuel Laskys 1975 Dt 45 " Id rather leave on my feet (than on my knees) did get full info on 45 from him, but names gone west stuff think is 100% , its on DT as well, but only 2 copies, anyone fill in artist info or background. Mick Smith and Ady pushed out some great stuff as well, but as think hit a wall at the 20 hour mark so all details unlocked at moment As said well busy with large crowd, the air-conditioning certainly seemed to make a big difference, though not sure if on 100% of the nite as later on just could have been me getting hotter with ac saving me from full meltdown. Always surprises me at times just how, who and how often you bump into people, loads had caried on from the dayer event, but also bumped into many from all over uk at places get to odds: few things running round in head, maybe of interest Were not too young - Mick H played Camaros one - know of 3 versions of this all Jackie Beavers related - Karen Stirland? 150 quidish and not very good imo, Jackie Beavers one and of course the Camaros one, sure once heard yet another version female group more uptempo, anyone ? Mick H (who run into recently more often than me own family) passed on that the next Union Club is a Stafford flavoured nite Have a present passed on from Claire for Kates birthday who lives around Paul O way, if anyone meeting up with either and could pass it on please let us know, so she can get it soonest. Come 7 ish time to get home, as now at 23 hr mark it seemed a good idea. Easy journey back and was back to Llandudno. Verdict on it all, in past the cost, time it takes and so on have meant journeys down been bit limited, often fall victim to the easy option when faced with a choice of a 5/6 hour journey or a 1 hour journey when event choosing. As found nite certainly was one of most enjoyable events been to over this year just say now getting up to speed with rail discount system. Thanks to Ady, all the djs, and everyone else involved for a great time.

Kev from wxm was one of guests and dished what crowd wanted out, other guest was Pep but due to travels missed him. Soul Heaven - Goldbourne - Missed last one which heard was a packer, this one numbers were a bit down, either due to other going ons or maybe last weekends events at joey ds mountain retreat. But as always there had a most enjoyable time, its a combination of the djs they book, the people, the feel and the fact always enjoy it. Line up inc likes of Mick H, Andy Dyson, Pete Coulson, Kev Murphy All cracked on and what heard dished out some top sets .full on mix of all styles, which worked well thru nite, though last oldies based bit at end not exactly my full cup of tea -shrug.Lots of laughs and the standard apoligies go out here to all where needed, fair few travellers inc Northampton lot (threw me this as thought that area between brum and london was just called cambridge) and good meet ups.Enjoyable nite to me, feel free to agree, disagree, slag me off etc etc Other Events -Well dont know how 100% these views are, some from people involved, some from quick chats etc etcFeel free to enhance! Saturday saw us out to the land of Joey D with a visit to that event in the village called Caers.... near Hope near Wrexham. Had a most enjoyable time at the Soul Nite there run by Rob Lloyd. Shrine - a view from the other side After posting Andy Rix's original version sleeve notes from the kent cd, andrew hamilton got in touch, and gave this other view on one of the legendary northern labels, andrew h hailing from cleveland USA is a regular contributor to mags such as skm, a reviewer of soul cds for many outlets, has been involved on the soul recording side his name appears on many soul sides as writing credits, and is a main fighter in raising american awareness on soul singers who apart from regonition by uk soul fans, have largely been ignored I had to write you after reading the Eddie Singleton/Shrine story. I found it informative and interesting but full of fantasy. Dont get me wrong I love reading these type stories. Its just that Singleton tries to make Shrine seem like a big deal when in fact it was colossal bust. I would love to see evidence of Shrines so called "local hits," in the Tri-State area, some radio survey charts or something, the fact that Eddie stated he pressed up 2,500 copies of each release. Where did they go? Surely not to any jocks in Cleveland; no Shrine recording ever got played in this area, not even on the weekend and college stations. I doubt very seriously if they made any type of impression in the D.C./Baltimore area. The building that warehoused some Shrine recordings did indeed go up in flames. Ive heard most of the Shrine material and to be blunt the stuff was weak compared to what other labels were putting out at that time. Even payola wouldnt have help much, they simply werent in the pocket. They are interesting to listen to now on tape and CD, but have you ever heard a Shrine 45? Hell, most people have never even seen one. The only person who went on to become something from Shrine was Keni St. Lewis, who later wrote for the Sylvers, the Jacksons, Tavares, and others. How do you think Motowns Quality Control department would have rated the Shrine Recordings? My guess is most would still be unreleased and buried ass-deep in a vault somewhere. But this is the beauty of Northern Soul and old obscure tracks, the story behind the record is always more interesting than the record itself. Berry or Nat Tarnapol didnt have to put any barriers up to stifled Shrine. Shrine stifled itself. Listen to what was being released at that time then listen to the Shrine stuff. Which would you buy? If you were a DJ, which would you play? Ive talked to numerous people in the D. C./Baltimore area who have never heard of Shrine, it artists, or recall hearing any of the songs on the radio. Im talking about people age 40 to 60. Which isnt saying much cause most Clevelanders have never heard of Jessie Fisher, Lou Ragland, Johnny Moore, Cleveland Robinson, the Soul Notes, Fred Towles, the Sensations, and numerous others. Thank you Lord for not making me a music frontrunner, I love the experience of picking up the old and obscure at flea markets or second hand stores and discovering sounds I enjoy, admiring the label, and checking the writers and producers credits. Vaughan from Anglesey asked me to let you know that he went to the Ritz in Desborough last Saturday - Said it was a fabulous nite and a really good venue - the crowd of about 300 were incredibly friendly - for such an out of the way place he was stunned to see so many people there - the sounds were a broad blend of Wheel, Torch and Stafford oldies with a really buzzing R&B room upstairs. Considering that there were about 4 other events on within an hours drive it was astonishing to see such a good turnout. Karl the organizer did a great job. Many in from the Cambridge area, and he tells me that that Monkey is well know down there - in fact they were keen to know more about the next summer Monkey all-nighter. Vaughan travels a lot and said that if is in the area again he would definitely go again - one to recommend if you are in the area......... best regards Alan

Here is an interesting story (from the Austin Chronicle) about how 60s TEXAS FUNK is making an improbable comeback: Texas funk comp release from London- based Jazzman Records featured in Austin Chronicle Clip below... Sometimes you have to cross an ocean to find something good in your own back yard. Such is the case with Texas Funk, released last fall on London- based Jazzman Records. Archiving 20 obscure Lone Star funk sides (and one from nearby Shreveport) from the late Sixties and early Seventies, Texas Funk unearths a largely unknown stratum of Texas music history. Funk sprouted forth as an adjunct to Southern soul in the mid-Sixties with James Brown hits like "Papas Got a Brand New Bag." Down in New Orleans, the Meters tapped the essential groove with polyrhythmic exercises like "Sophisticated Cissy," while in Houston, Archie Bell & the Drells gave lessons on a new dance called the "Tighten Up." Although it was the T.S.U. Dj-ed at most london mod clubs thru that period as well as running the successful reggae and ska nites at the penny black, sols arms and dublin castle in camden. Irish greg and i got together to put on a do where we could have a good dance and enjoy great music and the capitol soul club was born, unfortunately we lost the bar shoreditch after eight great months, we then teamed up with mr jahans our fantastic promoter to start up the cap soul at the dome which is going from strength to strength. MY love for r&b shows in my sets but im not averse to a stomper or 2. This Ones For You My Love - Benny Spellman - Alon This is my favourite spin at present, and very reminiscent of the early 80s over played but much loved "Fortune Teller". This track rattles along and features many fine piano breaks from New Orleans hero Allen Toussaint. It took me many years to track down a copy (actually bought it for the other side, which is also great Northern!), but I have no doubt that more copies will eventually surface. When this happens the record could become a monster tune across the land. Just Cant Let It Ride - Dexter Manley - cover up Ady Croasdell gave this one six months of 100 Club turntable action a few years back, before it "disappeared" into my collection! Its the same song as John DAndrea on MGM, but "Dexters" version is more menacing, with its good strong brass work and organ breathing away. I must start playing this at the Dome....remind me someone! The Greatest Story Ever Told - Billy Arnell - cover up A real grower that may take a couple of plays before it grabs you, put give it a chance! Some have said that its the best thing theyve heard in years, with its nagging beat, "tree chopping" guitar and swirling organ. Hit {here} to stream the first session, 1) joe tex - i wanna be free - dial got this courtesy of steve thomson, blew me away first time of hearing, i played it for shifty at lowton and he tells me he has now got one, typical joe tex with plenty of breaks and changes, i am always getting asked for this, a great dancer. 2) contract on love - stevie wonder - tamla i have been after a copy of this for about two years but nobody would sell me one, i eventually settled for the album which i bought of bob hinsley, about a month later i was found a copy by simon, so if anyone wants stevie wonders greatest hits i have one for sale. 3) lois blain - here i am - open-g-records this great dancer chugs along with the breaks coming via the catch in loiss voice, out of new york just wonderful soul music. 4) richard berry - have love will travel - flip i am getting lots of requests for this top dancer, out of California i suppose it could be classed as doo wop if you wanted to pigeon hole it, got this of carl willingham when he acquired the demo, he wont have an issue in the house if he can get the demo, and the bugger has most things on demo, mostly white of course. 5) carol fran - knock knock - excello i first heard this about six months ago on a tape and had to have one, trouble was nobody had heard of it. i mentioned it to ian cunliffe and lo and behold he turned on up within a couple of months, we are not worthy ian, brilliant r&b with a distinctive start. 6) barbara lynn - second fiddle girl - jamie this was an unknown barbara lynn track to me, my good mate hoss played this to me at my house after a niter and it blew me away. always one of my favourite artists due to the diversity of her music. i had the privilege of meeting her and interviewing her for my magazine northern essence (plug) at last years cala gran and the lady is just that, one of the nicest most unassuming people i have ever met. about me i started on the northern soul scene about 1968 when i first went to the twisted wheel in manchester, i was a regular there until it finished and then went to the blackpool mecca until i was married and then all things have to change. i was off the scene then until about seven years ago, now with my second wife viv we found that the scene was thriving more than when i left it. after our fist soul night we were hooked and have not looked back since, i think we have made up for those lost years a hundred times over since we started back, in fact it has virtualy taken over our lives. i have been involved in most aspects of the scene, as a promoter, dj and editor of my own fanzine northern essence, the mag has been great for me, i have met so many of the artists i have admired over the years, , to name a few, barbara lynn, eddie holman, jerry williams, terry callier and dean courtney and they have all been such nice people,just like most people on the scene. the great thing about the scene IS the people, we have made so many real friends from all over the country and making new ones every week, yes the music is important but if you are progressive thinking and you go out every weekend then you are going to have a lot of dissapointing nights if you do not put the company you are with first, then if you get a good night s music as well its a bonus. if you like the tunes mike has put on his site you can hear them and more like them every month at lowton civic hall where i am resident in the r&b room along with regulars carl willingham, roger banks and malc worsley plus guests. the next one is friday 8th december, by the way i will also be djing in the main room that night, my next few dates this month are at the savoy hotel in blackpool on saturday december 22nd, bolton anglers club on boxing night, the white hart in farnworth december 27th and again at lowton on new years eve. ok thats that, know cynics will say recycling but as always reply is **** em, just looking at dates and the notes and of course the sounds, and what Isee make it worthwhile to me, so if wanna hear any of them again just let us know which and will dig deep.
