  3. May have noticed was a bit of confusion on this as details were shouted on Jazz Fm, but some thought it was diff venue Tracked down details and ripped them below Venue is the UNION CHAPEL web site If attend do us a favour and pass on soul source how it was, as due to other weekend going ons cant fit in london EVENTS NEWS FLASH BLUES LONDON 2003 6TH AND 7TH NOVEMBER PROGRAMME CHANGE News Flash Sadly Blues London 2003 must announce the cancellation on November 7th of Ms Koko Taylor the "Queen of the Blues" due to illness. We will miss her very much and wish her a speedy recovery. We are thrilled to announce however that Bettye Lavette has kindly offered to fill in for Ms Taylor. Ms Lavette has taken the blues and soul world by storm the last several years. Acclaimed by those in the know as the greatest unrecognized soul singer in the last 40 years, Ms Lavette was named the "#1 Artist Deserving More Attention" by critics in the Sept/Oct 2003 edition of Living Blues Magazine. She appeared to sold out audiences at the Chicago Blues Festival in 2002. Ms Lavette was born Betty Haskin and recorded her first single for Lupine back in 1962. (when she was only sixteen) She went on to produce a string of singles on labels as well known as Atlantic, Epic and Motown throughout the 1970s, though she never released a full length album. Ms Lavette's new CD "A Woman Like Me" has wowed the critics across American including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Village Voice, the New York Times, Blues Revue, Living Blues and many other. We are delighted that she is able to appear Friday Nov 7th, still with special guest Robert Belfour. We are also suspect that a few of her other secret admirers may turn up to add to the evenings enjoyment. * Union Chapel Administration (postal address) * The Vestry * Compton Avenue * London N1 2XD

  9. Also news on a site Guy is involved with (see links) a brief clip check out link at end for site details Guy Hennigan Now living in Manchester Guy Hennigan is recognised as the man who revived Northern Soul from the doldrum that was the aftermath of Wigan Casino. Along with Keb Darge - now a highly paid (not that he'd want anyone to know it! - sorry Keb) funk DJ, Guy brought sixties newies to the scene and remains a vociferous advocate of the quality and not the quantity of soul music. Record collector, promoter and DJ he started his soul career at the tender age of 11 listening to his sisters records and learning from his friend across the street. He passionately believes in Northern Soul - the music and hates any unworthy attempts to make it trendy link to article updated http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/going_out/clubbing/2003/08/20/guy.shtml Guy Hennigan on Northern Soul : I'm getting tired of making excuses for Northern just because of some chicken adverts... the scene is a bit of a dinosaur but there's still plenty of quality music to be found and that's what's important. Guy Hennigan on being a collector : Don't bother trying you need to be a millionaire nowadays and it's almost impossible to start a good collection if you're not...besides there are loads of cds available and they're more than satisfactory if you're not serious about collecting but you want to have some music at home. Guy Hennigan on being a DJ: There's very few quality DJs around now that are doing anything to progress the music...there's people running successful nights off the back of playing oldies etc and that's fine but I'd say that only Butch is doing anything like what used to be done...I'm semi-retired now and I'm lucky that I still get asked to DJ at good quality nights... my knowledge isn't anything like it used to be...but my knowledge is still 90% better than a lot of people professing to be DJs at the moment. Guy Hennigan on having the knowledge : It's everything and you can't be taken seriously without it...I get really p****d off when I hear people particularly on the radio talking about a subject they know little or nothing about. Guy Hennigan on Northern Soul being trendy again : If it attracts new people that's a good thing but I'm very wary of the media...Northern's been misrepresented before and I don't want that to happen again... Guy Hennigan on why he still loves Northern Soul : The music is still the best I've ever heard anywhere and what excites me is that records I used to think were no good I'm discovering are excellent...and that's what's truly great about Northern Soul. Guy Hennigan on his Top 5 records: The ones I haven't heard yet. Guy Hennigan on the ones that got away : Not that many but yeah I'd like to have them before I get too old. Guy Hennigan on the size of his collection : Not big enough...several thousand...I think! Guy Hennigan on the future : Well I'm going to carry on doing what I do but my website is also a focus for me now - it's a collection of photos - an archive of Northern Soul which eventually I intend to be a creditable and recognised user generated site where people can get in touch with one another - and embarrass one another in many cases (laughs) - but also it'll be a way of me buying and selling online. I've got lots of things in the pipeline but I don't like to give too much away!

  16. SOUL IN THE CITY at BAR NYLON, LONDON – 1st OCTOBER 2003 By Gene Robertson Since the days of the Old Blue Last , Soul In The City’s previous venue, they certainly have kept the soul flag flying by providing top drawer midweek Northern Soul for all, on the first Wednesday of every month, right in the heart of the City of London. The new venue, Bar Nylon in Addle Street, is a superb wine bar/night club type setting with a decent-sized dance floor – and it’s talc friendly!! I visited SITC at Bar Nylon on Wednesday 1st October – it’s just around the corner from where I work, making it even more of an ideal venue. The DJs, Dave Greenhill, Paul McKay, Martin Thomson and Mac provide the sounds, and thrive on a strict policy of playing original 45s only – one I completely agree with!!! Arriving there at about 8pm, the club was already in full swing with about 40 – 50 people, and the dance floor was already pretty full!! There were a few “city girls” in abundance, but they really made an effort to enjoy the music and have a dance (though by our standards, even though they like the music, the city punters have a lot to learn about soul dancing!! No real disrespect, since they enjoy what they hear and you can’t knock ‘em for that…..). Paul McKay was behind the decks at this point spinning the likes of “You’re Gonna Miss A Good Thing” by John Bowie, “You Don’t Love Me” by Jerry Ganey (yes, Jerry got there long before Dawn Penn!!!), “Carbon Copy” – Larry Trider, amongst others, keeping the feet happy of all those on the dance floor. (See below for selected playlists). MartinThomson & Dave Greenhill Next up was Dave, with his usual mix of top dancers, including “Soft Walkin’” – Freddie Houston, “On The Stage Of Love” – Ronnie & Joyce (why don’t some more DJs get behind this one?) and “I’m So So Sorry” – Don & Ron. For those of you who don’t know Dave, he’s been collecting for well over 20 years now, and has never sold a single item!! Makes my blood boil, these people who can pay £20 for Ray Pollard on Shrine………..!!!! By around 10pm, the venue had filled up considerably, and there were well over 100 people in. Martin Thomson followed immediately. Been a good year for Martin; he and Audra married in February this year and, in August, added baby Curtis to the family (named after guess who?). It was at this point I decided to “burn the boards” to sounds like “Love Is Dangerous” – Frank Polk, “Tell Me Baby” – Karmello Brooks and “No Second Chance” – The Deadbeats et al. Mac closed the night with half an hour of choice stomping oldies, in the form of “Run For Cover” – The Dells, “That’s When The Tears Start – The Blossoms, “I’ll Try” – Sam & Bill keeping those diehard soulers, who stay till the end, up on the floor. I left the night with that feeling, knowing it had been an excellent night – looking forward to the next one (which, incidentally, is on Wednesday 5th November and every 1st Wednesday thereafter)! In closing, you’ll be hard-pushed to find a more classier soul venue in London than Bar Nylon. Nights start at 6.30 and run until midnight, and entrance is free until 7pm, when door tax of £3 kicks in. What a night!!!!! 20. Having had nearly 2 fantastic years, the Northern Soul event at Brooklands Hotel in Barnsley closes its doors on Saturday November 8th...but we go out with a bang. Guest DJs on that final night will be Ginger Taylor and Soul Sam. There seems to be a different story every week as to why we are leaving. To set the record straight there are 2 reasons. A) The hotel would prefer to use the venue to host weddings, of which from a financial point of view I can understand. B) When we first started the event in February 2002 there was the Catholic Club and ourselves operating Northern events (of any kind) in Barnsley. Over the last 18 months Barnsley got Northern Soul fever and in any given month there has been up to 10 different Northern related events appeared in the town! If I point out the obvious that there is a limit to how much an individual can spend on socialising in a month ...fill in the gaps. The result is that Broolands dropped from 250 every month to around 100 and as such made it difficult to maintain Premier Class guest DJs in what is without doubt a superb venue. In fairness it should also be pointed out that on 3 occasions some very high profile DJs didnt turn up on the nights they were booked! That doesnt help when youre taking money off people who come to see these DJs, does it? On to positive things then. It looks like we have got a new, very nice and exciting venue sorted for 2004. More details as and when. Until then, lets look forward to the last night at Brooklands which will be huge. Not only do have we have Ginger and Soul Sam but also, what I believe to be the best residents line up around. Snowy, Derek Pearson, Gary and Derek Greenhoff. It all starts at 8pm, thats 8pm and carries on until....we go home! Finally Id just like to say thanks to all those that have supported the event.....the many guest DJs Ginger, Kev Roberts, Terry Davies, Derek Allen, Kenny Burrell, Tim Brown, Dave Evison the list goes on. If you played thanks....thanks to all the web sites that spread the good word - invaluable. As are the radio shows, so thanks to Kev Roberts and Richard Searling. And finally most importantly the people that turned up every month, thanks very much indeed. Dave Needham Brooklands Hotel, Barnsley Road, Barnsley. 01226 299571. J37 M1

  24. Had the following posted via "contact us" took liberty of posting up here as sure lot of readers be up for helping out My advice, well depends really on just how much soul you already in to Those cds may be a good starting point, as not really familar with them, cant really say. Perhaps a look at track listings, if lot not familar with give it a go? Sure be some sites with clips as well, which can help you see if worthwhile. Though would suggest checking area for any local soul nites or even trying to get in touch with soul fans from there, (know of a few round those parts) as best way to enjoy to me is out and about. As said not really much help, time against me! Maybe some from your part of the world can post up any details of soul events, clubs, emails etc etc Also am sure there are a few readers out there who can pass on better tips and info for you ....
