this should be a laugh, tying to get to 50 as seems theres a fair few other similar titled songs such as aint no big thing (but its growing) was recorded by likes of elvis and 32 others inc finbar saunders going by the title anyway few more of the Gerald Sims one electrons almost sure? sly slick and wicked Ringos - Ain't No Big Thing ? tommy sands? catalinas 79 lp olympics - unissued ? appears on recent cd ? not heard, but possible

Kollas orignal Tempests/Jimmy James/Radiants "Ain't No Big Thing" Then Nick got in, pinching some ones was going to post, so just one other for now Burn you a new one - no not a dodgy mp3 cd site, but the Embers Lp -one with "aware of love" on that also has a version of Ain't No Big Thing is the Van MCoy one ? Using my vast photgraphic like memory (otherwise known as google), says he wrote one same title, different song info got at hand says g sims being the writer credited to chevis music company gerald sims?? gotta rush, more later.....

Mention of this by Kolla dragged up memories that mucker reckoned that this is one of the most covered northern connected soul sides. He said that once he managed to list 50+ of them, "go on name again" I said , but time was against us So in a spirit of Sat afternoon boredom, will list a few I can remember, and feel free to add versions Or add ought info, orig first version? any trivia etc etc Or if think theres another "contender" for most covered version...... get it up!!

Tyring to get in touch with the Midnight Hour team, to see what score is on this post, as soon as get reply will pass on. As always we welcome all news, views, etc etc from all soul fans on soul source. However as always say if post when logged in or leave contact info, it does make the post more worthwhile.

SOUTHERN SOUL MOVEMENT - COSHAM – PORTSMOUTH FRIDAY 23/01/04 We were travelling a little further a field for tonight’s soulful treat. So a day off work to enable an early start seemed the best course of action for Col & myself, although Eddie (who was doing all the driving!!!!!!) worked ‘til lunchtime and we later learnt that Steve C, our host, had actually started work at 4.00am that morning to ensure an early finish!!!!! Still at least Col & I had managed a lie in on Friday ;-))))) The journey from Yorkshire to “down sarf” was relatively straightforward considering the unpredictability of Friday “rush hour” traffic and we arrived at our destination just over 4 hours later this was due in the main to Eddies driving and my navigation skills oh and of course Steve’s excellent directions. – Note to editor – Yes Howard can you believe it, we did a 250 mile journey in the time it usually takes us to get to t’other side of Pennines and we didn’t pass the Trafford Centre once ;-))))) After greetings, intros to Jason & Liz, a good old chinwag there was a grand tour Carol & Steve’s recently moved into mansionette (very nice too). We were then fed & watered (also very nice) before freshening up for the soulful antics ahead at The Racecourse Snooker Club All the signs were good as on arrival at the club we had to go up a flight of stairs – steps (either up or down) are always a good sign, just something about having to climb stairs and hearing soul music get louder as you finally reach the room that always ensures a good night, the two, stairs and music just seem to go hand in hand - We entered a reasonably sized room, the bar at the entrance and a small stage at the far end of the room with (number one criteria as far I’m concerned) a good sized, level, smooth dance floor, oh and plenty of comfy seating for those soulies who prefer to talk about the music as opposed to dance to the music!!??!! We’d arrived at the club all fired up and ready to hear some quality Northern Soul and quality Northern Soul is just what we got all evening. Steve C & Dave Abbott starting the proceedings followed by Col then Eddie, Steve, Dave then Col & Eddie again, the night finished with all the DJ’s behind the decks having a great time pulling out again and again some spanking toons!!!!! I danced just about all night the exception being the first half hour or so as I had arranged to meet my brother (a non-soulie) at the club, he’s an ex-marine!! who has settled in Portsmouth and whom I hadn’t seen for over three years, so as I was down his neck of the woods I couldn’t miss the opportunity to catch up on family gossip, but at the same time we had travelled a long way and I didn’t want to miss any more of the soul music than I had to so I thought it best for him to come to the soul night as opposed to me meeting at some bar in Portsmouth (full of sailors aren’t they?) I could tell the sights and sounds bemused him so I tried explaining our passion for the scene and despite giving him a copy of “Soul Up North” (yes Ed I said give – I couldn’t charge my own brother now could I?) I was unable to convert him to the faith, well you can either feel the music or you can’t, at least one member of my clan has got soul ;-))))) There’s a short playlist at the end but I’ve got to say that a couple of the records played are amongst my current favourites of the moment – “Rags to riches to rags” by Donald Height and “I won’t have any babies for you” by The Bittersweet. We all finally left the club in the wee small hours of the morning and headed back to Chez Steve’n’Carol’s where the night continued for those with more stamina but less brain than those who elected to go to bed. This gave Steve the chance to challenge Col & Jason to a round robin game of table football, Steve then temporarily gave up his stance as polite host to become ruthless, undefeated champion at table football, well champion in his own house at least. I declined the invitation to take part in the game and opted for the much easier task of spinning a few toons. Eventually I succumbed to tiredness and went to bed leaving the boys to their “soul talk”. All in all, the entire trip to Portsmouth was more than worth the journey time. An excellent soul night, with a great music policy, run by excellent people, attended by friendly “up for it” soulies. Keep it up boy’s you deserve to succeed. Your enthusiasm and passion for the scene is blatantly obvious to anyone who cares to make the journey to Cosham to attend “The Southern Soul Movement” Northern soul night. For details of future nights I think they have or are in the process of setting up a website so try www.southernsoulmovement.com. I promise you if you’re into quality Northern Soul music you won’t be disappointed. Just left to say a huge thanks to Carol & Steve for looking after us so well, you were great hosts and made us feel very welcome. I hope we can reciprocate sometime. PS: Sorry about the missing towels, it was Col who “stole” them, seems he was a little over enthusiastic when he packed the overnight bag, at least I stopped his blatant attempt to re-house your golliwog ;-)) Steve C 8.00 - 8.40 Bobby Star - Together - UA Wilson Pickett - I found a true love - Atlantic Butlers - Laugh laugh laugh - Phila. Noticed news about this when the video of Sharon jones was posted up, seems now available and as just flashed back into memory, thought may be of interest to some Two quality sides for a fiver..cant be bad, plus avail via paypal - link at bottom of article QUALITY RE-ISSUE FUNK 45s - SOUL - 70s The First Release on Fryers records was a tough choice but in the end two strong dancefloor classics won through. Pressed in Memphis the way 45s should be and taken from the Original master tapes Fryer is proud to present............ A: Barbara Lynn - Im a Good Woman Listen Note: This is a different mix down to the original 45 . Barbara Lynn Ozen born 16 January 1942, Beaumont , Texas , USA has a strong career producing soul music. Her early records were released on the Jamie label one of which (Youll Lose a Good Thing) was a top ten hit. In the later 60s she then started issuing records on Huey P. Meaux (her producer) Label "Tribe" on which the 45 " Im a good woman " was cut. Popular on the northern soul scene in the 70s and 80s, it was then picked up by Funk 45 djs in the late 90s when Ian Wright compiled it on his album ' Sister Funk turning many on to the wealth of good funky tracks hiding in northern soul boxes. The driving beat and delivery of the vocal ensure that it will destroy any dancefloor it is played on, be it Funk, Soul, R&B or Hip-hop, just listen to the first 10 seconds and you are hooked in. B: James Young&The Housewreckers - Barkin up the Wrong Tree Listen Here we have one of the best (not the rarest) funk 45 ever to come out of Texas , a state that seems give up a new, classic lost funk 45 every other day. This is the same band that hit the charts in the early 60s as Big Sambo & The Housewreckers. That shot at the limelight came to an abrupt and when certain civil rights leaders took exception to the name 'Big Sambo. Needless to say they kept at it, and cranked out this blistering slammer. 'Barking Up The Wrong Tree features a wild vocal and shrieking sax by Young, and solid, extremely funky backing by the aptly named House Wreckers. Very popular on hip-hop and funk dancefloors for a few years now its become a £40+ 45 as the original has dried up, so this issue should quench the demand for this rare barn stormer. The info on James Young was Taken from www.funky16corners.net a fantasic resource for information on Funk and R&B bands

more odd ball trivia stumbled across on travels, Bit of background on dore label and boss A unique label featuring the comedy stylings of several artists famous from radio and television -- including Hudson and Landry, Victor Buono, Jim Backus, Joey Reynolds, Lew Bedell -- mixed with classic R & B acts like Rita and Tiaras, The Superbs, The Entertainers IV, Starbright, Kenard, The Debonnairs, Ray 'Ace' Acevendo, Fridays Child, The Jades, and Jenny B. Classic entertainment at its best! WHO THE HELL IS LEW BEDELL? Creator of Dore Records Lew Bedell (the founder of Dore Records) was born in Texas. At the age of four his family moved to Los Angeles, but he found 'em anyway. His Father was a 'heavy' drinker (carrying home a case of Scotch every other night). That's 'heavy,' man! When his Father died he was cremated, according to his wishes. With all that alcohol in him, to this day he is known to all as "The Enternal Flame." The only important thing that happened to Lew between the ages of four and fifteen is that he lost his virginity when he was eleven to a thirteen year old girl named Cookie. He felt very important about it because he was the only one she didn't charge for....rest of story at https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/i35_10845

grant nought was intended in reply it was just a tounge in cheek sort of thing, as those who know my views on sites like "soul club" would perhaps find it amusing this site getting grouped with them know many do support that site, and meself have no hang ups with that, each to their own and all that, respect all different views, tastes, points of view etc might not agree with them like, but still respect them mike

had a quick look Jeff, think in right place, couldn't see any mention of magicans Have to say heard it out at a large venue over a good sound system and was impressed, unlike other vocals it didn't sound "tacked on" and at times sounded like a different record if know what I mean While have heard some saying already known, if anyone has been keeping it under bed , then full marks to those who have dished it out , from what heard its come from tapes so may be interesting further details of these Anyone heard the female version yet mike nice site, enjoyable reading:)

just lazy mid week thoughts got me thinking what is "knowledge" ???? to me knowledge is like anything else, can be gained, bought, collected, stolen, faked, earnt, etc etc but what is it a mix of expereince and time put in a good photographic like memory? a well maintained and easy to use database a well looked after, indexed collection of fanzines good connections or perhaps a state driven by years of a never satisfied thirst for more soul combined with a passion? By all means respect to those who can remember every name, value, color of label correct spelling, value and so on and of course respect to those who are masters of cut and paste or rewritng others words But what gains my respect even more is not amount of knowledge but the amount of passion, passion and knowledge combined ... even better and even more respect but knowledge without the passion ?? mmmm... doesnt quite hit the same button to me just me own odd mid week thoughts, more than likely to shift by tomorrow and undoubtly on dodgy ground so feel free to shoot me down

grant think you find all local and national radio pay "royalties" via an org like the "performing rights society" which from what i read collects and distributes royalties on behalf of artists theres a web page with info at https://www.prs.co.uk/ https://www.mcps-prs-alliance.co.uk/ And would have thought any legal radio station not paying their dues would be closed down fairly swift Not a expert by any means, but sure there may be one or two out there who know more about it and can shout if got it wrong. On web sites Not really happy with being grouped with likes of soul club But way see and do things on here since aware of the issue a few years ago try and use the following methods, sounds clipped from full length no download ability sounds mixed in as per "6-pac sessions" avoid non-cd released tracks idea being to highlight some of the great sounds made that maybe some not aware of ands also what great sounds can hear out and about from todays djs and at todays events can only speak about this site, Not really in mood for a rant, so won't bother putting up my view on some sites out there, who do things like request donations for access etc etc

Nice worthwhile link Kolla, never stumbled across that one before. Just shows how much stuff on web is out there that gets missed, nice one keep them coming. Same to anyone else, find ought worthwhile on your travels them throw links up On actual thread, some might have missed it, so just push up a link to article where can hear Jo Wallace on Womans Hour talking about this very subject and more My own views on subject? none - just class the djs on what and how they dish out the soul, female, male, scottish, english, old, young..... who cares ? a good dj is a good dj
