My other half, Shirley, did a review of our first night at the Top Deck Club in Huddersfield last Saturday so thought I'd post it up, totally unbiased of course. Cheers, Colin. 3rd September 2005 Groovy Grooves at the Top Deck Club, Huddersfield. It was the 3rd of September, that day I.ll always remember …“cos that was the day we started our new soul night. ;-))) Guy & Col had decided to start their latest foray into the fickle world of soul night promoting following the success of the …"Real Wigan soul night" held after the last night of the play …"Once upon a time in Wigan" back in April. The music policy was to be on the same lines as venues Col had previously promoted just simply northern soul music with a capital N & a capital S. It was to be a venue where astute soulies could come along to hear audacious DJs earning their fee by rummaging in their boxes and playing something a bit different, something new, the previously played mid-tempo toons that were dismissed twenty years ago but are the hidden gems of today. So we knew the Top Deck Club was just the right size for the kind of forward thinking, discerning soulie prepared to travel to get their fix of …"sweet soul music" ;-)) With adequate parking in the surrounding streets, the club is across the road from the bus station and relatively close to the railway station. It's far enough away from the town centre Saturday night pub crawl all pros so far now for the only con the room itself is at the top of two flights of stairs but even this con depends on how fit you are; Karen, Eileen, Bev, my lips are sealed and for an amazingly small fee I will destroy the CCTV tape I bought from the club l;-))))) (funny how its just the ladies, I myself had no problem with the stairs ;-)) The room itself is on the bijou side and the dance floor although small is beautifully formed, with four mirrored pillars surrounding it; so thereÃ's no need to be half cut up before making that first tentative move on to the floor as the mirrors give the illusion that there are at least four other dancers on the floor with you;-))))) So back to the night how did it go, well just about as good as it could, a great atmosphere, a full room, cheap beer, dance floor action, great toons played by DJs whom had the presence of mind to play to think about what this travelling crowd of soulies had paid to hear consistent good quality Northern Soul. Phil Parker Love you just the same Jerry Williams Ordinary Girl c/u By now Col said my services were no longer required at the door (I don't like bouncing anyway and besides those black puffa jackets dont suit me:-)) Funny enough the playlist notes I had been taking down also stopped around the same time :-)) Fortunately Colin, Dean and Guy wrote down some of their plays, unfortunately Andy didn't hence my pathetic excuse for his playlist, soz Andy. Needless to say he did play a great set many of which were unknown to me. All in all great music appreciated by a great crowd, next one is Saturday 1st October followed by Saturday 3rd December so come along to the Top Deck Club for some Groovy Grooves. Soulfully yours, Shirley.

Just to let you know ... There are two auctions currently running to try and raise money for the city that produced so much music we all love. One is being run on http://www.soulstrut.com and another on the http://www.fryer-mantis.co.uk board. The rules are collectors dig out a record, offer it up to the community of collectors and whatever $$ is raised finds its way to the needy. The www.soulstrut.com auction has raised over 20,000$ in the past week, and the www.fryer-mantis.co.uk auction, though only two days old, is going great guns too. All kinds of records, studio tapes, acetates, issues, some NOLA some not, are on offer. The www.fryer-mantis.co.uk board money is going to an artists and musicians' fund, the www.soulstrut.com auction is going more towards more general relief. Both can be seen in action here ... Soulstrut http://soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=heat Fryer/Mantis http://fryer-mantis.co.uk/modules.php?name...=viewforum&f=12 And here are some details about a possible way the money will be spent ... http://fryer-mantis.co.uk/modules.php?name...iewtopic&t=4135 northern soul

After a look at how the news/articles section( front part of site) is working and the way the forum and rest of site is intergrated, its thought that there is room for improvement. Main concern has been speed of site, ease of use, while offering the best features and content. As felt that not achieving the above , next few days will see a bit of a change

The adverts are from google google scans each page of site and determines what are the keywords on each page (if this case I assume New Orleans is one ) Google then selects "related" adverts and displays them dynamically on the page. Unfortunatly there is always going to be a chance that due to real world occurances and the dynamic way it works, some adverts may not be appropiate. If site considers them offensive they will/have been blocked.

dunno if its just the retro crowd who are only ones stuck in 1970s, going by posts above seems like some promoters are as well main reason water is recomended to be freely available is due to drug use few clips below dunno what legal side is but would have thought any major event organiser should be aware of stuff like the below and while maybe feel not a major problem or likelyhood, if its good enough for rest of uk, then it should be good enough for soul events 22 Availability of drinking water 2.18 It is important that everyone attending dance events keeps themselves hydrated with water or other non-alcoholic drinks. This is particularly important for those who have consumed alcohol and drugs, especially ecstasy. 2.20 It is therefore imperative that there is free and unrestricted, but monitored, access to cold drinking water at all times. Licensing authorities should be aware that, in order to maximise bar profits, several owners and promoters have turned off water supplies, supplied only warm water or discouraged bar staff from supplying free cold water. The provision of free water is often a standard condition of a licence where dance music is being played and any breach should be considered very seriously.

ta for replies always going to get stuff like this on forum, where quick comments can have 301 meanings and the instantness of it all can lead to sharp replies dont seem any damage done, quite restrained for a monday so gonna take it matter closed

Have to say was sort of suprised to read in this topic that at some events bouncers search and confisicate water out of customers bags and the only source is to pay what seems to be a high price at the bar /index.p...ndpost&p=166877 Many events that I get to nowadays do provide free water when asked. Below govt guide does recommend that free water is made available. Going by aim of guide, myself would say then any major event organiser should ensure free water is available, and allow water to be brought in. Can't think of any valid reasons why this should be a problem Any Thoughts ?? Promoters already taken care of this? unaware? not bothered? Punters views ?? The Safer Clubbing guide contains comprehensive new advice for club owners, dance event promoters and local authority licensing departments on how to ensure the health and safety of anyone attending dance events in England. which recommends that free water is made available
