  2. Recently thanks to Stevie Cato, been in touch with Author Kimasi L. Browne who's dissertation entitled "Soul Or Nothing" was featured in a recent news item He sent me such a enjoyable and interesting email that felt a need to ask him if ok to post it up here as it explains the background to "Soul Or Nothing" and other things much better than my words could ever do. Not only did he say ok to passing on the email , but he also passed on a copy of a recent paper based on the dissertation that was given at the Manchester Institute of Popular Culture at Manchester Metropolitan University yesterday. Many thanks to Kimasi both for the email and the copy of the paper, as it says he will be at Cleethorpes this weekend The email is below, and the paper will be up in the articles section in a moment or two mike I'm in the UK carrying out follow-up research to convert the dissertation into a "hard copy" book manuscript. The study looks at the scene in 1998 and traces its roots from the early 1960s. At the time I began the study in 1996 there were only two books on Northern Soul ("Nightshift" and "Soul Survivor"). In "Soul or Nothing" I review all of the books on the subject that I could reasonably locate up to 2005. As a dissertation my writing s deliberately academic, however I purposefully wrote everything with the Northern Soul community an intended audience. When I was on the scene in 1998, everyone treated me with so much love and respect--never failing to help me to ultimately understand just what Northern Soul was all about. I don't know if I completely understand everything, but I have tried to be true to what so many fans told me was important to them. They made it perfectly clear that they don't want to be documented as some kind of social objects, like they feel the mainstream media has done. I have also tried to address all issues based on what the fans presented to me on what they felt was important. I feel like I am a part of the Northern Soul scene now, even though I'm African American and Californian--not a collector, no longer a dancer, and not knowledgeable about so much on the scene (too much to learn--even in eight years). While I'm in the UK I want to connect with all of the people who were informants on my project. I want to personally give them a digital copy of the work and to shake their hand and thank each one personally. . I will be.presenting a paper based on the dissertation tomorrow at the Manchester Institute of Popular Culture at Manchester Metropolitan University in City Centre. I am attaching the paper that I will read at 14:00 on Thursday. Afterwards, you may post it on the site for the fans to read and comment if they want to. The paper is being presented at an academic conference called "Manchester: Music and Place" to a group of cultural studies scholars from all over the world, most of whom have never heard of Nothern Soul. I hope to meet you Mike, since I'm in the UK for 2 months. I will be at the Cleethorpes Weekender so I can give a copy of the dissertation to Ady Croasdell. And, I know I'm going to enjoy being in a warm and loving Northern Soul environment once again. (I hope they don't kick me out of the country after reading what I've written).
  3. not bad imo, though at first the scene from the film Blue Juice did spring to mind
  4. Dunno whats going on , but getting to point where every time log on here can't believe what am reading top it all off now have a member "lifting" a members post on here and posting it as his own on another forum fair enough we all pass on info on here and other places and while sure that many where possible do try and give credit but sometimes may get over looked but that isnt the case here a member has just cut and pasted "complete" another members post on here in reply to a question , complete with spelling mistakes and joke and then posted it as his own on another forum in reply to the same question to me this just taking the piss out of site and out of the member who posted it usualy avoid commenting on other sites and boards cause to me its not the done thing, but when you get moderators of other forums coming on here and lifting complete posts just to post on their own site as their own posts, with out a mention of the original poster or where it was lifted from ... asked the member involved to explain the holly st james thread has the original post and link to the rip off /index.php?showtopic=29657
  5. original post was started as a rant by myself but caught myself before went off on one thanks for all views and suggestions, lot of issues covered and while main concern is the original one will add my comments /thoughts on some of others raised later Main gripe was as said at start, the fact someone yet again , showed up, used the board to make some serious accusations, all serious stuff but and here's the main gripe, what was the reaction after members posted up info to clear the matter up..... no retraction or ought just more of the same At same time had someone "anonymous" post up on front page that two other members who are currently taking time and effort to release soul tracks the right way are bootleggers, and again once after an answer whats the reaction... nothing Two are just yet more recent events in a long line of similar posts, to be blunt its about time that some people wise up to the fact that this site is not some playground where they can come along and post half baked serious accusations with no or little thought behind them and then expect to walk away whistling with no comeback when the accusations are found to be lacking This site does have responsiblities both legal and more importantly to the members on here, and while the idea of allowing such posts was so soul fans can air "genuine" grievences it does seem that the actions of a few are now making this unworkable Are looking at a lot of things and there are other outstanding issues that need to be resolved asp Thanks again to all views and suggestions, and apoligies to the vast majority of members who have made this site what it is, for the rant and tone style of above. mike
  6. fed up of people coming on here and posting accusations against existing members and when these are proven wrong, not having the decency to hold hands up and say "sorry got it wrong" think fair to say that most if not all of our well known members have been subject to this, and while the original thinking of allowing such posts was it helps clear up misunderstandings, kills rumours and such, due to the misuse by some am now looking at this issue very closely
  7. Had a great email from the author of "Soul or Nothing" (see news item for info) Kimasi Browne Some of you may know him from past visist to UK, am looking at putting up a more detailed item later on, however as part of the info concerns today will just post this up for now I will be.presenting a paper based on the dissertation tomorrow at the Manchester Institute of Popular Culture at Manchester Metropolitan University in City Centre. The paper is being presented at an academic conference called "Manchester: Music and Place" to a group of cultural studies scholars from all over the world, most of whom have never heard of Nothern Soul. as said its just a quick shout for now, mainly in case anyone is in Manchester area and not aware more later.... mike

  16. Stumbled across this the other day and thought worthy of a shout on here. Hopefully will be able to get from the author by Kimasi Lionel John Browne, who have been told is in the UK at this moment a few words on the background and such on this new release shortly. Now available online from Amazon in a downloadable ebook format at $55 for 531 pages Book Description Abstract This dissertation documents obscure African American soul music (from Motown and other record labels) and its affective work in forming emotional, social, economic, and cultural identity in the predominantly male, white, and working class Northern Soul scene based in England from 1967 to present. The study is based on fieldwork in this 'underground' community in England, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. The community is a disparate, heterogeneous representation of the wide diversity of British culture, but following the model and outline of four components of a music culture set forth by Mark Slobin and Jeff Todd Titon, it can be viewed as an intact quasi-homogeneous music culture. A history of soul music and Northern Soul is presented. Music consumption (e.g., genres, dancing, collecting, venues) and music production (e.g., deejaying, 'breaking' or popularizing records, new compilations of rare soul recordings, and live performances) within the community are examined, along with fans' collectively shared ideas about music, belief systems, contexts, aesthetics, and musical and social traditions. The Northern Soul subculture comprises working class people in the post-industrial north of England who have adopted African American cultural products as their own cultural expression. Northern Soul fans discuss the impact of their working-class status on their activities and their attraction and loyalty to the Northern scene. Formation of cultural identity is analyzed in terms of material culture, specifically the 45-RPM 7-inch vinyl record as a metaphor for personal power and legitimacy, since these working-class white males have established their place in society through the material culture of 'others' (i.e., collections of African American soul music records). A descriptive and phenomenological analysis of selected Northern Soul songs is presented. Conversations with Dave Godin, the 'Godfather of R&B in the U.K.,' who coined the terms 'Northern Soul' and 'Deep Soul,' composer/performer Frank Wilson, and Northern Soul DJ Steve Cato (an example of what it means to be young, black, and male in today's Northern Soul community) are included, as is a detailed discussion of the scene's geography.
