Funk Brothers London Dates Thursday 18th Jan - Saturday 20th Jan
Mike posted an article in Event News
The Funk Brothers The Ronnie Scott's All StarsThursday 18th January - Saturday 20th January £36.00 Information on The Funk Brothers The Funk Brothers: Jack Ashford (Leader & Percussion) Joe Hunter (Keyboards), Gregory Wright (Keyboards), Larry Johnson (Lead Vocals), Jeneane Cranet (Vocals), Valencia Robinson (Vocals), Robert McDonald (Bass), Derek Organ (drums), Ronald Rathers (Guitar), Angelo Earl (Guitar), Carmelo Scaffidi-Argentina (Trumpet), Tom Ralls (Trombone), Calvin Bennett (Saxophone) Jack Ashford - Upon hearing the early Motown records that invaded England in the '60s, EMI Records' president Sir Joseph Blackwood remarked they would never make it because the tambourine was mixed too hot.. But Sir Berry Gordy of Motown Records knew something that Sir Joseph didn't: Jack Ashford was not just any old tambourine player - he was a tambourine virtuoso. Just talk to any percussionist about "the cat that played tambourine at Motown" and watch them become enraptured. But his first love was vibes, and his playing caught the eye of Marvin Gaye when he saw Jack playing with an organ trio in Boston. Coming to Motown at Marvin's request in 1963, Jack went on to become their most prolific percussionist, playing more than a dozen traditional percussion instrument as well as a few "off the beaten track" instruments like knee slaps, foot stomps, and his own invention, the "hotel sheet." A particular favorite of Marvin Gaye and Norman Whitfield, Jack's imaginative and colorful percussion grooves were one of the principal reasons why these two great artists always seemed to be breaking new ground with every recording they produced. clip from Ronnie Scotts Website more information and details and the rest of article can be read via link above -

Debbie asked could post the below It's with alot of sadness that I have to report the death of Terry Mac from Manchester. Terry was a true disciple of the northern soul scene and an absolute evangelist of the 60s mafia. During the dark days of the late 80s when folks were few and far between he and a select band, Tommo, Oz, Pete Lawson and Daz careered across the country in their pursuit of rare sixties excellence. Terry hadn't been on the scene for some time but he never lost his love of the music and never perfected his dancing! His funeral will be in Nottingham but for more details please contact me on 07817728064 it would be great to have some old friends say goodbye. Many thanks

I have posted up another extract from my 1977 Wigan diary . I also fell on some more video of Wigan Casino on You Tube. In fact, there are quite a number of pieces of video taken from UK TV programmes about the club and I was surprised how amny times it has featured on TV! The extract below is a fairly balanced view of the place from some the leading DJs who played there. https://indangerousrhythm.blogspot.com/2006...eers-story.html

depends on how you look at things I would say discussing the influence 60/70s soul music is having on current recording artists is a valid point

I have referred to a diary I kept on Wigan Casino playlists in 1977 in a previous post on Ronnie Forte . Over the weekend, I looked back at the diary prompted by my recent post on the Wigan Casino . I discovered that I had included my favourites from the time of the filming of the Granada TV documentary on the venue. You can read the list by clicking on the picture above and I have posted Lillie Bryant's mid-60's classic which was massive in March 1977 and a track I hadn't heard for some time. ... https://indangerousrhythm.blogspot.com/2006...ch-1977_11.html
