Mentioned a few times on here over the last 18 months, now out on release in the USA and does seem to have been recieved well Here's a clip from one review can read full version on the Charleston City Paper Website (link below) Dreamgirls Dreamworks SKG Directed by Bill Condon With Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, and Eddie Murphy Rated PG-13 DECEMBER 20, 2006 FILM REVIEW | Mo Betta Motown Dreamgirls hits most of the right notes for drama told through song BY SCOTT RENSHAW .. The tale opens in the 1960s, at a Detroit talent competition. A vocal trio calling themselves the Dreamettes — Deena (Beyoncé Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose) — fails to win the evening, but they capture the attention of Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a car salesman with visions of becoming an entertainment manager. Taylor successfully wrangles a gig for the Dreamettes as touring backup singers for popular soul performer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy), but soon the women promise to be even bigger than the headliner. And when fame enters the equation, relationships shift and become complicated. .... full review can be read here http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobas...oid=oid%3A21202

  4. Stumbled across this entry on the Wall of Sound blog. A fairly serious piece, and may be a bit heavy for a cold thursday however the way it looks at "Out On The Floor" is interesting, a clip below This point will become clearer, perhaps, if we turn to Dobie Gray's recording of 'Out on the Floor'. Lyrically and musically, the song is an interesting mid-point between the integrationist agenda in black politics and the civil rights movement; between Ward's cultural poles of Motown and James Brown (1998, p. 123-169). https://wallofsound.wordpress.com/2006/12/1...-us-soul-music/

  8. Just found out that Simon Bendle a member of this site (user name: Simonb) was murdered this weekend. Only knew Simon through his posts on here and the broad soul and funk forum (username slyguy2), and while not the most profilic poster on here, he was a long time member of this site (am sure he had a other earlier username as well) and had always found his contributions worthwhile and interesting reading. His death has left two children fatherless and the broad soul and funk forum has set up a fund raising auction, its aim is set out below This Auction is to help raise money for his children hoping that it may help during this very difficult time or in the future. full details of this auction can be found here https://www.fryer-mantis.co.uk/modules.php?...wforum&f=12 along with the forum thread about this sad news https://www.fryer-mantis.co.uk/modules.php?...opic&t=7970 am looking at ways how this site can assist with this fund rasing auction and will post later however it is easy to join the forum and take part Simons avitar which think he used throughtout his time on here and sure many will regonise is below RIP Simon

  14. Often visited this blog as always found it entertaining and offering a greay different slant on things. Unfortunatly londonlee has just posted that it is now shut down, thought worthy of a mention as sure many like me will miss it, if course can read the full story on the blog https://www.soul-source.co.uk/rare_...ink.php?lid=195 No prizes for anticapating the below... as now officially back and reopen have to quickly mention the soul source members blogs have returned and so if fancy getting your own going if a member just hit this link and in 30 seconds can have your own personal blog up and running no geek stuff/skills needed Posting is just as easy as posting in this forum, its uses same editor, system etc, so is really a no brainer as said 30 seconds is all it takes just hit this link ( if logged in)...... ***To start your own click here and the 30 secs include your first post... straight up

  25. Saturday 23rd December 2006 is the date for the 4th Rare Soul allnighter at BIDDS, Sutherland Road, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, ST3 1JB 9.00 p.m. - 7.00 a.m£10 on the door. DJs on this occasion are guests Andy Dyson, Jumpin' Joan, John Kelly, Ted Couldstone, joining the resident team - Des Parker, Roger Banks, Shute & Mace. A night of quality rare soul sounds on original chunky vinyl. Held in the main room with its large wooden dancefloor and stage (and rather suspicous suspended decks to eliminate any bouncing records!) A private carpark and late late bar makes this venue pretty much ideal. The record bar is always very busy at this event, and all record dealers are welcome. There are only 4 nighters held each year at this venue.......So get all your pressies packed and your mince pies baked early...you may well need Xmas Eve as a recovery day...... More info contact Mace tel - 07759045427 email - macejojo@aol.com DJ times for this Saturday at Bidds. Joan has a prior booking before coming down to Bidds, hence only having the one spot later on. All DJs usually have 2 spots, one prime time main set and the other either early evening/early morning second spot. Any DJs with probs regarding set times please shout up soon as poss.
