Ok major probs last couple of days during upgrade of forum there was a prob with as a file didnt want to work with the server as it involved posting, editing and such of posts it meant couldn't look at re-opening site till was sorted as with these things never sure where the problem lies, and when trying to solve, another problem with server emerged, hence the lengthy down time anyway does seem now that it may be problem with the actual forum software itself and so while waiting for them to get back to me, have managed to do a work round which allows the forum to reopen... in a limited form open in limited basic form the wysiwyg editor is not available, the bbcode on all past posts are awaiting a rebuild and so some past posts like the past refosoul may look odd there may be probs with the actual format of posts etc etc etc look - default skin which means just the basic features refosoul clips not available via forum may be other stuff, way looking at it is... if it works then fine, if it doesn't then it should be sorted very soon thinks thats it, ask to remember that it is open in a limited form and hopefully be back to fullsteam asp apoligies for not being able to give much details of when it be back, but due to the nature of the first problem and then the knock on effect, it was nearly always a case of .. hopefully within the next hour or so if this works... ack mike

Detroits Invictus - a new digital only release with a sample theme
Mike posted an article in News Archives
DETROIT’S INVICTUS SAMPLED BY HIP HOP GREATS MADE BY MOTOWN HIT MAKERS We are proud to present Detroit's Invictus, Sanctuary's first digital only compilation, which is an enthralling journey through the original context of sounds which may be familiar to modern ears in the form they have been sampled by artist such De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Fat Boy Slim and Pete Rock. The 14 tracks featured on this compilation are all produced by the all-star song writing trio of Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland who have produced legendary gems for the likes of The Supremes, Junior Walker & The All Stars, The Four Tops, Martha & The Vandellas, The Isley Brothers and The Elgins at Motown in the 1960s. When the trio left Motown in 1968 they set up the Hot Wax and Invictus labels. In the early 1970s Hot Wax and Invictus scored hits with a variety of acts including Freda Payne, The Chairmen Of The Board, Laura Lee, 100 Proof (Aged In Soul) and The Honey Cone. The tracks making up this unique compilation of sampled tracks are as follows: 1. Freda Payne - Unhooked Generation As sampled by JVC Force's - Strong Island - 1988 2. They produced gems for the Supremes, Junior Walker & the All Stars, the Four Tops, Martha & the Vandellas, the Isley Brothers, and the Elgins until they left Motown in 1968. After moving from Detroit to Los Angeles, the trio created the Hot Wax and Invictus labels. Freda Payne, the Chairman of the Board, Laura Lee, 100 Proof (Aged in Soul), and the Honey Cone were among the acts that scored hits in the early '70s. Charles 'Wigg' Walker turns it loose with the Dynamites Soul singer learned from funk and soul legends of the '50s and '60s May have read over the last few years on here reviews and such on Charles Walker's recent shows in the uk, just read an article detailing just what up to right now. A few clips below, just to show that its not just a run of the mill press release, but in fact a interesting read covering current, history, background and what he's trying to achieve and how With the release Tuesday of Kaboom!, an album that fairly lives up to its incendiary title, the group is primed to secure a foothold in the burgeoning deep funk movement alongside Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Breakestra and The Poets of Rhythm..... Etta James and Sam Cooke were just two of the other luminaries with whom Walker worked during that era, a period in which he was fronting a "straight-up soul and R&B" combo called Little Charles & the Sidewinders. Thanks to a push from saxophonist King Curtis, another big name on the scene, Walker and the band went on to become mainstays at Small's Paradise in Harlem. With the Sidewinders, he also released a number of singles for Decca Records. For a neo-funk band like the Dynamites, the tricky thing about turning it loose, to borrow from Walker, is to do it in a fresh way. This is especially the case when your touchstones include James Brown, Hank Ballard and Dyke & the Blazers, pioneers who patented their styles the better part of 50 years ago. "The idea was to make a record that didn't sound like it was made in 1962," Elder said. "We kept that in mind at every point during the making of our album. "Our goal was to have one foot planted in the funk and soul of the late '50s and '60s and yet also to give the music a new twist..... Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933, he moved to New York as a child where he sang in his grandmother's gospel choir and even recorded some tracks as a solo singer before entering college with the intentions of becoming a doctor. By the '60s though, Freddie had given up medical school to work as a songwriter in the city's famed Brill Building. Among his compositions were Paul Anka's "It Only Lasts For A Little While" and Gene Chandler's "From Day To Day". The full article can be read at http://www.oldiesmusic.com/news.htm In 1963, Freddie Scott cut a demonstration record of "Hey Girl", a new song by Gerry Goffin and Carole King. The intended recipient was the hit-making Chuck Jackson, but he turned the song down. Instead, Goffin and King liked Scott's voice so much that they recorded their own version with him. Phil Spector heard the results and said, "You've got to put that out. It's a smash." "Hey Girl" was a Top Ten US hit and became a club favourite in the UK, being covered by several beat groups of the time. full article can be read at http://news.independent.co.uk/people/obituaries/article2617422.ece Thanks to Deltree for passing on this sad news The forum thread can viewed here https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=49930
