A review from 2001 by Katrina Dixon about souling it in Oslo and Berlin Oslo, Berlin and Scotland - Katrina 2001 A short, few words (NOT) about souling it in Oslo and Berlin last week, of interest to few probably but Ill witter on anyhow, so hit delete now if you dont want to scroll thru an essay Friends in Oslo took me along to a club with the cool name of the Beat Basement held in the small back room of a very fine bar called Mono. Even tho theyre not into the garage punk, soul sounds played, they knew itd be right up my street, so they kindly put up with me going on about every single garage punk sound played during the first hour or so when there was only us, a few other bemused Oslo scenesters and about five mods huddled near the elevated djing area (who, when I got talkin... 11. Northern Essence edited by Pete Coulson - Review of 1999 Issue Northern Essence edited by Pete Coulson - Review 1999 site note originally up in 1999 Well here you go, yet another classy fanzine that s dropped thru my letterbox. All I can say is that the amount of worthwhile fanzines/mags dedicated to soul music is awe inspiring, the time and effort that must go into them must be enormous. (not just taking easy way out if I got a shite one I would say!). Each one I've ever read has its own style and format but all achieve same results a f*cking good read and a goldmine of information. Latest example of the passion is Northern Essence edited by Pete Coulson, ok start with boring details first address is Northern Essence 34 Lobelia Avenue Farnworth Bolton BL 4 OEQ UK subs £3.50 issue, £12 for 4 UK; (£4... 12. Out on Monday! Kents latest includes the much awaited Luther Ingram - Baby Dont you weep track! That floor filling track seeing the light of day for the first time is enough for a news item by itself, when you add that its rubbing shoulders with a large handfull of quality tracks as it breaks through the doors then it does look like this release from kent is one that goes straight on the must buy list. info from Ace Records tip top site The third of Kent’s ventures into the world of R&B dance music goes one step further into the world of musical categories by including tracks suited to the Belgian Popcorn scene. This genre of music grew up in the early 70s when like the UK’s Northern Soul scene, the hip teenagers of their day preferred the original dance music of the 60s to the records that were coming out of the US and UK at that time. 13. *GROOVESVILLE?USA* *The Detroit Soul & R&B?Index* Press Release As well deserved as this year's 50th anniversary celebrations have been, you might be forgiven for thinking Motown had been the only black music company in Detroit. But long before Hitsville's meteoric rise in the early sixties, the Motor City was already a hotbed of jazz, jump blues, and gritty R&B. Blue collar Detroit was one hard working city with the music to match. As Martha Reeves once said in the 60s, 'Detroit is full of talent'. And throughout that decade, independent producers and musicians did their level best to mirror Motown's success turning out some of the greatest and most revered soul sides. Yet although the black music scenes of Chicago,Philadelphia, New Orleans and beyond have been well documented the Motor City's minnows have been sorely overlooked. To correct this oversight,... 21. 100+ Sales list from Christian Hermansson Just hit read more to view "NORDIC SOUL 45´s" If you for some reason don´t want this list in the future (a few times a year at the most) send me a mail and tell me so and you will be deleted from my address book. If you do wish to receive a list in the future send me a blank mail saying"I want the list" and you will be added to future mail outs (this does not apply if you get it by mail obviously). I try to grade the records properly and you can buy safely, if not satisfied I´ll refund your money (not if you change your mind about the tune though!). Gradings are stricter than many major UK dealers I reckon and a M should be virtually flawless, most M- are basically the same while some have very slight visual wear. All records, gardless of grading should play fine unless stated ! If you need to ask me anything don´t hesitate to do so. Many of these records can be heard at various internet sites but if you need to hear anything you can give me a call at +46 40 26 27 76 (between 1800-2100 CET!). Records will be packed and shipped the usual way with cardboard stiffeners. I prefer reply by e-mail but it´s ok to phone me. Any orders will be dealt with in the order I receive them. Insurance(registered mail) up to £33 =£3.30 up to £675 = £5, this is on top of postage.Postage should be about european average. Mail is usually very reliable between Sweden,UK&US (I have never lost anything yet). I might give discount on shipping/records depending on how much/what you buy! Trades considered, good stuff/good condition, not necessarily very expensive stuff. Hope you find something, Christian Hermansson. E-mail: sectleader@hotmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: Click Here "NORDIC SOUL 45´s" If you for some reason don´t want this list in the future (a few times a year at the most) send me a mail and tell me so and you will be deleted from my address book. 22. Lowton A busy mini-niter (till 4am ) at Lowton last nite. Looking forward to thisone as had a smart line up, late finish and Lowton with its many rooms, places tochill and catch up is always a bit of a laugh Few words , some re-cycled quips and a disturbing lack of vinyl info follows.Lowton - things as always the same, Car park was full and as always no matter what that guy tells me when driving can never find how to get that bit around the back.In and at em.Somewhere along the line, have picked up part time job, ended up with 3 sets of flyers to dish out, ususal attempts to try and clear DMSC bulk lot, also CSC and Yorkshire Riders to give out, as distrubtion follows my travels (bar and record bit) can expect a auidence of alholic vinyl deviants at your events. (a often used and repeated quip) Rooms:Main hall was busy most of nite, thinned out from about 1am, but what saw all went down well and floor was busy Last weeks word of dj order was out of window as two of the guests Rob T and Andy R had a long drive back ahead so timings were changed, 3 rooms meant sounds wise recollection worse than normal!!Due to curent mood had stuff like Jamica Underground rattling round head rather than 6ts covers titles. Andy Rix and Rob Thomas can be classed almost local jocks now as residents just down the road at the monkey, missed most of Rob Ts but heard went well, caught most of Andy Rixs and highlight being at long last hearing instrumental. Crying Time out and about, myself and others always class it as a DMSC sound, but strangely enough has never been played there, email for why if the mystery causes sleepless nites. Dished out many of his big ones, fast approaching if not already classic status, Is Switch Around up there as a all-time classics yet or what???All floor filled, going down down well with the crowd. Missed a fair bit of Terry Ds due to other room wanderings, anyone fill in his latest plays??Caught half of Gingers, for David Flynn madedetermined effort to id that "catchy" track (just to say to him you know that catcgy track youre on about that catchy track....errr its gone) but nought fitted the way he described it , though he pulled out some blinders, all details were inserted into brain, but wiped out by later modern influx, Ian Cunliffe pulled out a good quality one set, Mean Miss-treater, No Good guy, Lazy , being a couple of highlights, Carl Wllingham finished nite off , with great mix of his top stuff, a couple of first hears to meand the odd revival or two. Place was packed, as said thinned out later on ish, but main floor seemed stay busy and caught lot of all style top quality stuff Modern room - spent a fair bit of time in there, what is going on with this modern soul thing, one minute bit fed up of mid -tempo sound a like stuff, or some of that MTV flavoured mush. Then all of a sudden have a month or two of geting assualted nah slaughtered by some of best stuffheard for a long long while, not sure if a case of just catching the right djsbut tonite ...wow! most impressive spots caught were by Pete Haigh and Mark Grice (mixing skills-ouch! flawless)- partial memories of tracks were by Jamacia Underground Blaze remix - just realised got this here at home via davey dixon - love exsiting being title great stuff Secret Sounds - Baby Come Home? a three initaled thing (yeah hopeless mike, I know)and a fair lot quality sounds that scream out the need to be id'd R&B Room As said last time place seems to be on a roll, and this time was defintely rolling. Djs caught featured likes of Roger Banks, Robbo, Mark Morgan, MarkStewart, plus should imagine a lot more. With a well wide range of styles and sounds. Note to Lowton DJ debut of one of the regular yorkshire crowd Mark Stewart who have made this their homes, heard went down sizzingly i think was word. Also word of even some ska getting a airingas Barry Norman would say "and why not" Seems Pete Coulson has this room well sorted and place was kicking all the niteCarry on and this broom cupboard will need a extensionOverall - enjoyable nite, some top sounds , lot of laughshours of fun! 24. An extract from Lois Wilson - MOJO Magazine April/May 1999 An extract from Lois Wilson - MOJO Magazine April/May 1999 Sent in by Dave Cassidy, thanks for the contribution mate, appreciated. How To Buy... Every month we navigate the high-water marks, rapids and stagnant ponds of the CD racks, so you don't have to. We continue with... NORTHERN SOUL It was the venerable Blues And Soul pundit, Dave Godin, who coined the term 'Northern Soul' to describe the rare soul sounds that were attracting fanatical crowds to the massive dance clubs in the North of England in the late '60s and early '70s. The key word here is "rare". In those days, DJs and collectors would think nothing of popping over to the US on the off-chance of finding that arcane ... 25. OK the USA trip was unlike previous as it hadnt really been planned in advance...I usually spend 4 months or so organinsing the working schedule. The reason for the almost last minute decision to go was as a direct result of the death of Andy Lee...Rob & I decided "fuck it..lifes too short". Normally I like to have lots of tasty things lined up but we decided we didnt really care if we came back with nothing. So day 1, Thursday evening, into Newark...spent hours waiting for our connecting flight to Ohio which was eventually cancelled..finally arrived there Friday 15 hours late to meet my first contact, brother of the late Herman Lewis...after haggling for hours we escaped with 2 copies of Whos kissing you tonite on Stone Blue...4 copies of Bee Jays Ill find you (Prime) & a Universal acetate of the same... 7" Bell Sound acetate of Whos kissing you ...A&R 10" acetate of Herman & Gerri Right direction which is the same take but a sli...
