    As you may have read in the forums Weldon Arthur McDougal III recently passed away on the 22nd October.2010 A West Philadelphia native Weldon Arthur McDougal III is rightly credited as a major contributor to the "Sound of Philadelphia". During four decades he has been involved in many ways, as a song writer, artist, group leader, independant producer and of course as a founder member and co-owner of Harthon/Dynodynamics record labels, While its hard to actually track down all his soul music related work due to the sheer amount, his involvment with Motown is also credited as a major part of his contribution (see links below for just two of the major artists he was involved with.) along with his contributions to the Philly Sound. He has worked for Ace Records since 1982 compiling Northern Soul LPs and CDs for their Kent subsidiary. He oversees the production of these from concept to product and actively seeks and negotiates deals with the US owners. Lucy Gibson Dr. Lucy Gibson is a temporary lecturer in Sociology at the University of Manchester. Her doctoral research explored popular music and the life course, which included ethnographies of Northern and rare soul, rock music, and electronic dance music scenes and interviews with over 70 adult fans. She is particularly interested in how ageing shapes participation in music scenes and music taste and is currently working on publications in this area. David Sanjek David Sanjek is a Professor of Music and Director of the Popular Music Research Centre at the University of Salford. Previously, he was Archives Director of Broadcast Music Inc., the performance licensing agency. He has advised many organizations, including the R&B Foundation, the Blues Foundation, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Library of Congress and the Experience Music Project. He is currently readying a collection of essays (Always On My Mind: Music, Memory and Money), a special issue of Popular Music & Society on copyright in sound recordings, and a conference collection on music documentaries for publication. Nicola Smith Dr. Nicola Smith is Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Popular Culture at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. Her doctoral research explored the British Northern Soul scene and she writes widely on ageing music cultures, adult-frequented music scenes and the performance of identities within fandom and popular dance. Her current research is aimed at convincing people that popular music is not just for the under-25s. Tim Wall Tim Wall is Professor of Radio and Popular Music Studies and Director of the Birmingham City Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University. More importantly, he's been dancing to Northern Soul since the early 1970s, even if it is a little less energetic these days. He's written widely on the relationship between African American and white popular culture, including an analysis of Northern Soul dancing. He may play some Northern records, but he won't be dancing himself today. This treasure trove of newly discovered recordings, highlighted by a duet with fellow icon Johnny Cash, will become available on October 26th, 2010. Culled from four decades worth of demos and other previously unreleased material, Rare Genius showcases the remarkable artistic vision, stylistic range and emotionally rich vocals that crafted Charles enduring legacy. Listening to the ten gems from the '70s, '80s and '90s that comprise this CD, fans will have no trouble envisioning the late singer rocking back and forth at the piano as he effortlessly segues between R&B/soul, pop, country and gospel. "Ray would always get inside the meaning of a lyric and make the listener believe every word," says Concord Music Group Chief Creative Officer, John Burk. "His vocals carried incredible emotion and intensity, even on demo tapes. What we have here with Rare Genius is on par with some of his greatest works." And that's crystal clear right from the album's sparkling opener, "Love's Gonna Bite You Back." The March 1980 session track features an upbeat horn arrangement behind what Rare Genius liner notes author Bill Dahl calls "a Charles vocal that's a signature mixture of sandpaper grit and heavenly goodness." Up next is the stunning ballad "It Hurts to Be in Love," which underscores the album's main thematic focus and one of Charles' favorite subjects: the ups and down of romance. Another compelling standout is the gospel-stirred Charles and Cash duet on Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me, Lord?" Discovered in the Sony vaults, the song was produced by Billy Sherrill in Nashville and recorded in 1981 for an anticipated release on a CBS album. For unknown reasons, that didn't come to pass. What's more important, however, is the emotional charge you get listening to these two powerful voices come together in this spirited and inspired pairing. Except for "Lord," the nine other Rare Genius tracks including the soul-drenched "I Don't Want No One But You," a blues-infused cover of songwriter Hank Cochran's country classic "A Little Bitty Tear" and the joyous "I'm Gonna Keep on Singin'" were found in the vault at Charles' R.P.M. International Studios in Los Angeles. Adding a little sweetening to some of the sparse, stripped-down tracks was a team of top-notch musicians and artists: guitarists Keb' Mo' and George Doering, organist Bobby Sparks, trumpeter Gray Grant, trombonist Alan Kaplan, bassists Trey Henry and Chuck Berghofer, drummers Gregg Field and Ray Brinker and background vocalist Eric Benet. As with its Concord predecessor, 2004's Grammy-winning Album of the Year Genius Loves Company, Rare Genius: The Undiscovered Masters is another fitting tribute to Charles, who would have turned 80 on September 23, 2010. Also many thanks to Nick Risi for the use of the photos from his own personal archives PAT POWDRILL AND NICK RISI By Paul Rice Pat Powdrill's mother and Nick Risi's father worked for the same company in Los Angeles. They started talking about Pat and Nick's interest in music and came to the conclusion that it would be beneficial for them to meet each other. At that time, Pat was under contract to Frank Sinatra's Label, Reprise. Pat Powdrill was born in Birmingham Alabama and moved to Los Angeles with her family. Pat was about eight years old. Nick Risi was born in Great Britain during the Second World War, who came from a family of musicians and enjoyed all kinds of music, his paternal grandmother and her two brothers migrated to Great Britain from Cassino, Italy. They were Street entertainers in the winter and Ice Cream vendors in the summer. Nick Risi LA 1964 © Nick's family migrated to the USA in 1957, at first living in Detroit and later moving to Los Angeles, where Nick became an independent record producer. He worked with various artists in Los Angeles during the 1960's. Pat invited Nick to her recording session of "Breaking Point" b/w "Luckiest Girl in Town" which was Pat's third and final single released by Reprise? Record City Dec 1964 © Pat was a young and talented singer, vibrant and full of enthusiasm. Pat was always interested in listening to other people's music. Pat and Nick became friends and she occasionally attended rehearsals of other artists. In December 1964 Pat attended Jane Canada's rehearsal and later a practice session of 'The Togas' at Record City, owned by Nick's friend Jim Thomas. Pat was just 15 years of age at the time and too young to attend events and functions by herself. So on occasions, Nick escorted Pat. Pat & Nick LA © 1965 In February 1965 Nick produced Jane Canada with "Just Before the Night" b/w "Just Imagination" released on the Crusader Label. Also in 1965, Nick Risi and Jim Thomas produced 'The Togas' first single "Baby I'm in the Mood for you" (written by Bob Dylan) b/w "Hurry to me" (words by Chris Morgan and music by Nick Risi) released on the Challenge Label, part of the 4 Star Music Group. The original 'Togas' consisted of five musicians, Chris Morgan vocals, John Bauman drums, Brian and Doug Decker guitar's, and Pete Parker keyboards. Nick stated that the Decker brothers and Pete Parker were good young musicians. Pete Parker played the keyboard and contributed to the backing vocals on Pat's Downey singles. When Pat's contract ended with Reprise Records, Pat agreed to record some masters for Nick and Jim. Two singles were released on the Downey Label in 1966 within a three month period. At the time in the USA, most DJ's were reluctant to Play 'DO IT' on air, as it was too suggestive? Pat & Nick Hollywood © Barry White suggested one of his songs 'Together Forever' to Nick and Jim for Pat's second single. Barry believed that it was the right song for her voice. Barry also had some releases on the Downey Label under the name of Lee Barry. A few years later, Barry White became a household name. The Powerdrills, Pat's backing group were session singers which included Pete Parker and Jim Thomas. Also in 1966 Pat became an Ikette, backing Tina Turner and went on a World Tour. Pat and Nick met again in late 1968. Pat finished touring as an Ikette. A few months earlier in 1968 Nick had an accident resulting in a traumatic amputation of his ring finger. Contrary to other articles, Nick never used his compensation money for his productions. Pat asked Nick to manage her, but Nick was reluctant to do so and did not want to get involved with the artist management side of the business. Nick only agreed to take on this role temporarily until he could secure a record deal. Nick and Bob Summers agreed to produce Pat for Sidewalk Productions. Nick and Bob had worked together with various other artists from 1965 to 1969. Nick said that Bob Summers was a fantastic musician and music arranger. Bob also composed and supervised music for Film and Television. Bob's brother-in-law was the famous Les Paul, who married Bob's elder sister Colleen Summers, known on stage as Mary Ford. They sold millions of records in the 1950's Pat had changed from a young vibrant enthusiastic teenager, to a Glamorous Young Woman. Pat needed some professional photographs to reflect this change. So Nick commissioned his friend, Hollywood Photographer Don Perry to do some portraits of Pat. Don Perry was not only an excellent photographer, he also supervised music for Television. Publicity Photo Commisioned 1969 Nick negotiated a deal with Forward Records, Pat and Nick mutually agreed to end the management agreement. In late 1969, Nick returned to the UK and in the 1970's produced a few artists including Eddie Buchanan a regular entertainer on the Benny Hill Show. 'DO IT' produced by Nick Risi and Jim Thomas is very popular in the Northern Soul Scene and the original Downey 45 Vinyl in good condition can fetch up to £200.00 on EBay.
