  9. The 6TS Cleethorpes Northern & Modern Soul Weekender is proud to announce that our live acts for our 19thweekender on June 10th-12th 2011 will be Sandi Sheldon, Derek Martin and Noel McCoy. I have been keen to see Sandi, who also sang under her real name Kendra Spotswood aka Kenni Woods, for many years. I missed her at her London performance at the Rocket some years ago and have regretted it ever since. Apart from her own records she was the lead singer on the Vonettes' stormer 'Touch My Heart', was the Charmaines (the name attributed to her acetate demo) on 'Standing In The Need Of Love' and was VanMcCoy's right hand girl throughout his soul career. She will perform a tribute to Van's incredible career too. Derek Martin is a major soul act who has never visited the UK. From his first record, the original mod classic 'Daddy Rollin' Stone' to his 100 Club Sue favourite 'If You Go' and on through his Roulette years, when he cut records of the quality of 'Breakaway' and the beautiful ballad 'You'd Better Go', he has delivered stunning soul sounds that have been hugely appreciated in Europe. His oddball Stax/Tuba release 'Sly Girl' is a personal favourite with an irresistible beat and a clutch of recently (10 years ago!) discovered acetates from his mentor Teddy Randazzo's publishing company have included the brilliant 'Flashback', 'Baby What Changed Your Mind' and 'I Can't Take It No More'. He also sang several great early 70s tracks for Buttercup and All Platinum labels so it will be a matter of "What the hell do we leave out?" Noel McCoy is a poorly kept music business secret, a young black Londoner with as soulful avoice as I've heard in years. He has been recording for a few years now and modern soul fans probably know him better than their 60s counterparts. I caught him at a recent London soul-dance gig where he entered the stage with much confidence and launched into a ballad. I thought that was too ambitious, but he had caught everyone'sattention in seconds and had them in the palm of his hand by the finish. His next song was a terrific 60s styled stomper that also oozed soul and I was won over. He has worked with Ian Levine recently (as has Sandi of course) and is now working with new band New Street Adventure who have written a tribute to the 100 Club nighters among others. I thought it would be good to let him show the Cleethorpes crowd what he can do. All the accommodation has gone as usual but we have plenty of weekend passes and Thorpe Park has caravans next door. Give them a call on 01472 813395 or try the tourist board for B&Bs 01472 323222. Passes are £59 each or pay a £20 deposit to the above address. PayPal is OK to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com but it's £20.75 or £61 that way to cover their costs. www.6ts.info for more details or email the above address or phone 0207 636 2622. See you at the seaside Ady & Charlie

  16. Continuing this current prize draw series... a chance to grab a copy of Kents latest fine and dandy cd release (out this monday). "Dance With The Contours" on Kent Motown it appears had planned to release "Dance With The Contours" back in 1964. With the tracks that were scheduled for this release being recorded in 63 and 64 But for what ever reasons the lp never made it out to the stores. Almost 50 years later Kent have got together with Universal and are now putting that right with this release. It's now showing up for pre-order worldwide in places such as Amazon etc @£13 and has a release date of March 28, 2011 being given "All tracks are mastered from fresh 2011 transfers of the original Motown inch tapes (even the two previously issued) and all are presented exactly how you would have heard them almost half a century ago. With notes by universally-acknowledged Motown expert Keith Hughes, who interviewed Contour Joe Billingslea in January 2011 specifically for the project, wrapped in a booklet featuring a wealth of previously unpublished and rare period photos of the group, this is a package that no collector of early 60s Detroit soul can afford to be without." To be in with a chance you just need to get yourself in to the Soul Source hat as per below.... you can enter by 1. sending a pm to myself via the link below and just putting contours in the subject heading http://www.soul-sour...&fromMemberID=1 Comp will end in two weeks 10th April 2011

  21. Mentioned in the forums via Mr Fine Wines announcement of 15 years of playing soul 45s on Wednesday nights at Botanica New York Release news of another collaborative release between Mr and Vampi Soul which is also available in a 10 x 45 rpm format as well as the usual 2011 formats. R&B HIPSHAKERS Vol 2 "SCRATCH THAT ITCH" CD DIGIPACK / 10 x 7" box set 15 years event was last nite but can see what missed here Release date: cd seems available now at places such as Piccadilly records http://www.piccadill...Soul-75084.html however the 10 x 45 box set has an " Expected 28 Mar '11" tag Here's the press bumf.... Second volume of our "R&B Hipshakers" series, featuring rockin' R&B and early soul from the King/Federal/DeLuxe catalogue A compilation of tracks from 1956 to 1967 by essential artists such as Otis Redding, Hank Ballard, Johnny Watson, Freddy King, Lula Reed, Titus Turner... 20 terrific dance cuts selected by genre expert Mr Fine Wine, from WFMU's Downtown Soulville Several titles reissued for the first time The limited edition 7" box set contains ten singles with replica King/Federal bags and labels, plus a set of artist pictures A long fingernail, calamine lotion, a Rudy Ray Moore back scratcher, this set of wild King and Federal rhythm-and-blues songs: what do they all have in common? Why, itch relief, of course! If volume 1 of our series ("Teach Me to Monkey") left you with an acute case of R&B pruritus, we at Vampisoul are here to dispense 20 more doses of musical medicine to help you SCRATCH THAT ITCH! We clawed our way into the King Records vaults again to come up with more virtuosic instrumentals ('Marsanova' rhymes with "bossa nova", more or less, if you pronounce organist supreme Hank Marr's surname with the right accent; Freddy King raises Mr Marr two dance crazes in 'Bossa Nova Watusi Twist'); more classy love songs with a hook ('Burnt Toast And Black Coffee', besides being the epitome of that particular sub-subgenre, is highly elusive and expensive on an original Federal 45 and much in demand in the R&B dance parlors of Western Europe; kudos to the gong banger on the plaintive 'You Have My Blessings'); more unholy dances ('Monkey Tonight' is one of Eddie Kirk's more restrained performances, believe it or not; this compilation's title track describes a dance that, like so many of the worthwhile ones, might get you escorted from your high-school prom in handcuffs if you tried it); and more holy nonsense ("My name is Puddentane," declares the prolific and wonderful Lula Reed, an earthily appropriate reply to Hank Ballard's to-the-point pick-up line 'What's Your Name'; if 'Whiz-A-Shoo-Pepi-Dada' meant anything, would it get your hips shaking quite so violently?). Then there's the record that's almost always in my DJ box, one of my favorite 45s ever - so exciting when its drums and taunting female chorus kick in over a loud system in a sweaty club, only to be answered by Johnny Watson's blistering voice and guitar: "I say, I love you." The women singing "Get them women off your mind" - confusingly, I can't get them off my mind. And the capper? A strong contender for Greatest Song Ever, in its best incarnation: Otis Redding's 'Shout Bamalama'. The custodians of the King vaults couldn't come up with this recording for us; for some reason, they found only a tamer mix. I had to dub it off my well-worn 45 (speaking of scratches!). Mr Fine Wine WFMU's "Downtown Soulville" show TRACKLISTING 1. Marsanova - Hank Marr 2. Buggy Ride - Rudy Ray Moore 3. Jail Bird - El Pauling & Royal Abbit 4.
