yep, they should, it appears to be just for login purposes apparently the 'theory' is using the email instead of the username is more secure as it's not in public view

A major system login change is upcoming (2024) that may result in problems for those with 'old' emails! 'The ability to use a display name as a log in is deprecated and will be removed. Using an email address as part of the log in process is more secure than using a publicly visible display name.' This is a software system change and while don't agree with the reasoning it is something that will have to implement regardless.
