A very creditable piece of writing by Mr Christian .........

I'd agree with that - balanced and articulate. I was quite surprised that Terry had it in him!

Two quotes caught my eye, with the current threads still running.

"There's instant street credibility to be had for any artist or brand associated with a scene that has always been wild, free and grass-roots. "

"The greatest aspect of Northern Soul is its resolute determination to call its own shots. Although plenty have tried, it has never been owned by an elite."

I think certain people need to heed this.

Missed that ! Surprised people thought it was a good piece to be honest. I wonder who he got the "bigger than ever" quote from. Was that in RC Pete ?

I didn't think it was too bad aprt from "in the darkness of a small club, young lads pirouette and footsie  to a Detroit-influenced Sixties soul groove "

I thought the Footsie was a figment of Tony Blackburns imagination while introducin Wigan Chosen few on Top Of The Pops.

Having had the chance to play at the Beat Boutique a month or so back, i think Liam and Paul have got a brilliant venue and a very young crowd, that just love the music being played (i was surprised i just hammered 70's) very refreshing, always nice to be around a younger crowd, especially for an old dog like me.

Brett.

Well done lads.

Don't forget that Christian's colour blind, Pete - he only usually sees Red.

Still at least he's from Greater Manchester, which i guess makes him almost unique among United supporters...

So where has it been then? :D

I was going to say that Matt, but assumed it would have just looked like Grumpy old me,

NS hasn't been away, its 99% of the people on todays scene who went away, while it carried it on, I am glad they went away reading some of the threads at moment as it meant we were able to enjoy the scene of our relevant youth (80's/90s')without dilution.

Its not the worst piece I have read, but to be honest having NS making the Times isn't really a good thing for me, it really does highlight that we are in 1974/75/76 or whenever the major tourist influx was.

Should say thought the TC has done some good bits before, including a great interview with Guy Hennigan some years ago, I think he had genuine interest in what was going on, with strong prompting from Guy.

I think what sums up current scene is far more people on here will have heard of Terry Christian than will have heard of Guy H!! Another irony that needs no smilies.

Ah Kenny Burrell the guitar great! Just as well I'm not your editor - you better do some more in-depth research next time Terry. Still not as bad as the girl I worked with who edited a piece about David PLEAT'S kerb-crawling charge and changed his name in each instance to David PLATT.

That comment suddenly gave me a flash back to an article about WC that was in the Sunday Times colour supplement sometime on in the mid/late-70's.

It must have been a few pages long. I recall there being a picture of a girl and her saying how they always had breakfast then went swimming after they left the Casino.

Would be interesting to see what other pictures they included.

Anyone got a copy of that mag. or aware of the article??

You would think by using the title 'The return of Northern Soul' you would asssume some things had changed? hey you always start with a paragraph of History, set the scene and all that but he might mention current sounds, venues and people?

I never went to Wigan, and this article means buggar all to me... loads of folk my age, late 3ts early 4ts probably went to the 100 club as their main national nighter, so to go on about the Wigan casino is just not representative...

And who's bored senseless about hearing about kenny' Burrells silly expensive single, I know I am... hey Terry why not talk about Tommy & The Derby's??? Frederick Hymes or influence of the funk scene these days...music that people actually listen to?????

look I'm a fan of it all, Love oldies, the images of wigan and the general history; the records, well they are all old records so to make a distinction is kinda silly really, but any old fart can write about events 30 or so years ago. All I'd like to see as a reader is something I didn't know about the soul scene, hey its back but its changed!!! shock horror!!!!

I don't know how you make that assumption from the article when there is this line;

"That Soul Sound with the Up North Groove" and his reference was the club where it truly began, the legendary Twisted Wheel in Manchester.

One can nit pic but generally I though it was a pretty good article but then, what do i know!

Me too Mark, not bad at all in my humble opinion, and even if Liam did get a few plugs, who cares?

The phrase "Although plenty have tried, it has never been owned by an elite" did make me smile though, especially taking into account the recent "souled out" thread on here, I'd say that one was up for debate!?!

loads of people dancing on a sunday afternoon at the wheel, coach trips to the wheel.....this is all very middle aged and not at all what this scene is about.I wish these clubs could be left in the past where they belong, keep them in your memories by all means....thats where they belong..........how long before we have twisted wheel/wigan casino bingo afternoons, spinning those tunes you know and love...."sing something simple". Still got it somewhere, I think it must have been 77 because I turned up at school to take an exam and this lad says "have you seen this?" he'd cut it out for me ( we certainly didnt read the sunday times where I come from  ) Theres a great picture of 5 lads at the beginning displaying records they'd got ( R&B time and Long Gone ) I've often wondered what happened to them

One or two "1000 yard stares" in the various pictures as I remember

Once I thought about this couldn't get it out of my head so just been down the local library where they have all these old newspapers on microfilm.

Definitely found the article you have got - in 1976. You've got a good memory as the first picture has 5 guys with record boxes, records etc.

It's spread over 8 sides, but I think the text would only take about half an hour to transcribe. If I can find time to do that I'll post it as a separate thread. Towards the end a certain Mr Levine gets a mention. Be nice to give him chance to contribute to another thread!!

Now here's the weird thing. I'm not convinced that this was the article I was thinking about in the first place! The picture I'd got in my head isn't one of these here. Oh well - I'll worry about that another day!!

I might be talking out of my backside here , but I though that Iancsloft may have hosted the Sunday Times guy around the scene. If it wasn't him then sorry, but I remember meeting up with the guy at the Mecca around that time.

Whoever it was, I seam to remember that it was about the best of the bunch of newspaper reports about the scene, because the reporter actually hung around for about a month doing the Mecca, Wigan etc with real soulies.

I think you got it spot on.

The guy who wrote the article is named Gordon Burn. (In the intervening years I think quite a well respected author.)

No doubt he was writing about something he had actually experienced - and includes some good first-hand quotes - especially from someone he calls "Gary from Barrow". IMHO adds up to a pretty good finished article.

And - yes - not just Wigan - but some stuff at the end about the Mecca.

Wish I could reproduce the photos but coming from microfilm the quality is "terrible -"

I've got a heap of old tapes in the loft, and there are couple of recordings from this show in there somewhere.

The show was around 1980 ish, I remember the one evening Terry Christian gave my small local soul night a mention which was fair enough, along with my choice of three records, it was one of the shows formats etc, mind you his description of where I was living at the time didn't do much to encourage punters, it went along the lines of !

"And a mention for John Morgan & Dave Wallace, who hold a soul night in the back room of the Trooper pub, on Chelmsley Wood in Birmingham every other Thursday"

( & In his best Manc accent he proceeded to say)

"Reminds me of night on that Chelmsley Wood when I was attacked by 3 griggs, dodgy place that eh" huh.gif Cheeky Fooker

I thought it was quite a descent read myself

opening up the scene to those who for years have had their noses pressed against the glass looking in.

This line is hilarious; I can picture a bunch of inquisitive fella's squished up against some cricket club window.

Like the kids at the end of the style council's video 'bond in your heart'

In every scene there is always some over enthusiastic fellas who would do anything to be a part of the perceived cool elite. They try so hard but don't quite make the grade..

I remember at one of the Brighton weekenders a few years back, there was this gerry lewis/napoleon dynamite looking fella in an oversized tweed sports jacket busting moves on the dance floor. His timing was completely off like he was dancing to a ska record but in his head he was 'the shit'.

TC's above line, even though it wasn't intended; reminded me of all these marginalized soulies.
