vaultofsouler Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Missed that one mate! Strike it from the records .... Your link is the "video with dancers" I mentioned that I'd heard/seen on TV.... It wasn't on YouTube at the time.... seems Polydor have added it....
vaultofsouler Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 whats she got to do with soul though? pop singer with husky voice.....too many cigarettes maybe .... can't really argue with that Chalky.... Does seem to be the "en vogue" thing re "(?)soul" influenced (?)music at the moment with these "new artists"....
Guest Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 .... can't really argue with that Chalky.... Does seem to be the "en vogue" thing re "(?)soul" influenced (?)music at the moment with these "new artists".... There's plenty of soul thats unknown to many on the scene, from 60's to present day without having to resort to artists like this.

Again.... can't argue .... As an aside.... I remember a topic quite some while back asking for "dancers" for a forthcoming video..... wondering if this is the end product ....

Well said Chalky..we need more SS-ers to take a stand; the 'Let's keep soul real' brigade. Seems like there's a growing tendency for clutching at straws whenever there is a backing track that somehow has a resemblance to a 'northern-type' sound . Brian

Brian Deffo more pop than Northern, but she is quite fit and am going to see her in February in London so will report back - and no I won't be dancing in a Northern stylee Mike B

Brian The Office I have to work in only plays BBC Radio 2 so to my mind the more tracks like this in the charts the better. That's not to say they should be on S/S I mean should we not be talking about SOUL music? Steve J

Kevinkent Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 whats she got to do with soul though? pop singer with husky voice.....too many cigarettes maybe Let's be honest Chalky, this is more "soulful" than a lot of dance tracks on the Northern scene. Surely it doesn't have to be black to be soulful? And you've already said that being from the present is not necessarily a bad thing. Regarding the pop singer comment - true, but let's not forget that this is a music business. The vast majority of the artists we hold in high regard were striving for popularity. Motown changed arrangements and brought in outside choreographers in attempts to break into the pop market. And we know how many lesser known artists and record companies tried to emulate and cash in on the success of early Motown. The main difference between pop music and many underground sounds can be summed in one word IMO- Failure. Failure due to lack of talent, but often down to marketing. This young lady, said to be influenced by her Northern Soul loving parents, clearly has a good voice and I enjoy listening to her. In the last couple of weeks, from those within and bordering on the Soul fraternity and within the music business, I have never heard such a buzz about a new release. Good luck to her. That said, Long live the underdog! -Kev.

Kevinkent Posted January 26, 2008 Posted January 26, 2008 (edited) I never said she or anyone has to be black to be soulful did I? No of course you didn't Chalky and I didn't mean to infer that. I just couldn't understand why you said "what's she got to do with soul though?" Apart from being black, which I've seen some on here state as prerequisite, she has all the other attributes required IMO. -Kev. Edited January 26, 2008 by KevinKent

Brian Yes its been growing since about 1972 !when i think of some of the dross that gets discussed on here I could put a brick through the screen.I,m sure this artist in no way considers herelf in anyway a p-art of this or any other scene but if she is influenced by black music in one way or another then good luck to her

Like I said earleir heard several times on radio and all I hear is a pop record.
Guest Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Ive finally heard Duffy - Mercy and have to admit its pretty good! Also like the Adele too, good to have some 'young' soulful singers
Winnie :-) Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I really like it, and think it is soulful and a lot better than some of the dross inflicted on the scene by DJ's keen to promote their personal taste, rather than entertain paying punters. Winnie :-)

Winnie :-) Absolutely spot on. I've just heard it and I love it. Far superior to all that x factor related chart shite!. I'd be made up if pop music went down this route, it'd be a great thing for the kids and pop music fans. I really like that Adele track too. Jayne.x.
Rich Buckley Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 And Do I spy young Liam Quinn in that video (Toodarnsoulful on here) amongst others??!!! Rich
Rich Buckley Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 She should do the Peanut Duck That's taking me way back to a CCI rally in the 80s Rich

Guest rigs28 Posted January 31, 2008 Posted January 31, 2008 been playing this on smooth fm for weeks now.top record.i wonder what comments you would be giving if she were a middle aged black artist from detroit.rather different ones i think.or if a top dj had covered it up at an all-nighter.smacks of snobbery me thinks.
