45cellar Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) Does anyone remember the first version of this instrumental. Not the Roulette Original, but the version that someone spliced together from various sources, intro etc. It was obviously the Roulette version but with a different intro etc, PYE tried to copy a few months later but it was different. I remember hearing it at the time, obviously it was on an acetate, also heard at venues. It was then released by PYE with their version/changes and released with Chuck Wood on the other side. Anyone? Soulsmith Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) Haven't heard that atmosphere for such a long time Sad thing is you probably won't again Pete. Closest I got to it, was Stoke a couple of times a few years back. Edited January 10, 2006 by Soulsmith
45cellar Posted January 10, 2006 Author Posted January 10, 2006 (edited) Haven't heard that atmosphere for such a long time WOW that was quick, The Atmosphere you're right, just as I remember - "Brilliant Times". It was nice to hear it again after all these years, just as I remembered it. Thanks, the atmosphere, hand claps, Magic. Footsie, part of Northern Soul history and it will no doubt stay there but I enjoyed listening to it on this occasion - Wonderful stuff. I know that the track isn't in vogue now but at the time when Instrumentals were played quite often, I'm suprised that this version was never booted on vinyl, or did PYE beat them to it on this occasion. Apparently it's gone - I used to have a mate at the BBC who used to nick me quite a bit of footage (Top Of The Pops mainly - er, David Bowie stuff, Xmas specials etc) and I asked him to look for that and he never found it. Also when they re-ran every episode they'd got from the 70's on UK Gold, it wasn't there. I know, I taped all of them
shute Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 guess what..I ve been saying ''lets revive this 45'' for years even asked top djs to play it.........and ''no'' none of them told me to F-off. Bob H insley was quite nice about
Jerry Hipkiss Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 guess what..I ve been saying ''lets revive this 45'' for years Think it was "of its time" mate - like the Jewels. Just wouldn't be the same now, you had to be there. Although we've all matured a bit I must admit to having goosebumps listening to that clip. Thanks Pete! Hippo.
Guest Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 (edited) As with whats been put into a previous thread, THIS is the one that did it for meeee!!!!!" What about the dancers on TOTPs anyone remember who they were? I think one of them was Neil Greenwood. Are any of them still on the scene full time?? Edited January 11, 2006 by OoooRICKoooO

Bob H insley was quite nice about I managed to get Shifty to play it at Cleethorpes w/ ender on the sunday night a few years back .It's hard to imagine how massive this record was at the time , and Pete's sound clip epitomised why I loved Northern Soul in the first place , that atmosphere was almost frightening !! Tainted Love I wish I had a Time Machine. The first time that I actually heard it, Danced to it, The Atmosphere, The Handclaps. Records like Tainted Love thoroughly deserve their place. "SPINE TINGLING" you're right Pete Listening to the ENERGY! - I sat back to listen to it & nearly spun out of the computer chair. Magic Thanks everyone. Edited January 11, 2006 by 45cellar

Thanks to those who put the sound clips up. Dave. I never personally liked footsee but listening to that makes me remember why most of my friends did, the 3 before 8 and tainted Love, what can I say, brings tears to my eyes hearing those songs like that claps and all, you can feel the energy in that room full of youngsters. This was what it was all about and to all those knockers of oldies and the more younger people ( who would actually have been considered old foggies back then ) on the scene today who poo poo Wigan and that era just don't have a clue about what it was like and I am afraid to say they never will have, and before anyone says oh it was the gear everyone was on then thats rubbish too as I and quite a few people didn't take so much as an asprin.

Chalky Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Just listened to clips and f*ckin hell f*ckin great atmosphere. Don't think you'll ever get anything like that again.
gringo Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Just listened to clips and f*ckin hell f*ckin great atmosphere. Don't think you'll ever get anything like that again. Your right you'll never get anything like that again, truly awesome, mind you all the big venues had great atmospere in them days, Cleeththorpes, Blackpool Mecca (espicially the all-dayers) Unity Hall at Wakefield, Queens silver jubilee 1977!!
Pete S Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Here are a couple of really nice moments - well I dunno if nice is the right word... the first one is an actual tape of me falling over at Wigan in 1977. The record is John E Paul and as the chorus builds to a climax, I do a fantastic spin and go right off the edge of the dance floor and fall over an adidas bag, fortunately the tape recorder picks this up secondly is a clip of The Pointer Sisters "Send him back", it follows the dreadful Pat Williams Orchestra, now what you need to know is when this was recorded which was around April 77, Send Him Back hadn't been played in the big room for over a year...just listen to the reaction from the people picked up on the microphone. This sort of thing makes absolutely no sense to most people but it sent a huge shiver down my spine. (Ignore the fact that the tape is slightly fast, batteries were going) 1
Pete S Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Better make this the last clip of the night I think, this was recorded the night Archie Bell and the Drells were on, great atmosphere that night (18-6-77), this is the Four Seasons I'm Gonna Change, just posted up because of the great clapping really
45cellar Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 Here's the last ever play of Yvonne Baker... Where is the archived material? We are constantly bombarded with some ageing rock group on their final tour, since their last final tour retiring just in time for their next final tour! Why can't we have a purpose made GOOD documentary/programme DVD containing any remaining footage/sounds like this? Not a Tongue in cheek attempt by someone who doesn't understand or really care what it was all about. I know that our scene has always been an underground scene, so often misunderstood. I have always felt let down by the media over the years. The missed opportunities throughout the years to capture these magic moments on film, doesn't bear thinking about. Surely it wouldn't do todays scene any harm if we had a GOOD informative look at our wonderful past. After all is this not where the roots of today's music lies?

Pete S Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Aww.. wow.. that is brilliant I'm glad you think so Rach, I've listened to it over and over, the noise that one girl makes sounds almost orgasmic
45cellar Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 (edited) It only survives in the hands of the likes of us my friend... It sort of underlines my point - The Media scored an own goal by not realising the potential of the footage that they once had. We Treasure any footage we have, so it couldn't be in safer hands now. Pete S Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Your right it would be good to do this but with everything it boils down to cost and licence's Plus you'd just be telling the same story. If you remove the artists from SWONS you've got the best documentary there is about the history of Northern Soul. That will do for me. Besides, apart from US, not many people want to listen to bootleg quality audio tapes, no matter what they contain.
Wiganer1 Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Your right it would be good to do this but with everything it boils down to cost and licence's ==== i cant believe theres no more footage of wigan on film?
Pete S Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 ==== i cant believe theres no more footage of wigan on film? Mick Smith knows a guy who recorded a load of cine-film there in 74, bloke still has it but won't part with it apparently!
