Gene-r Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 (edited) I'm trying to collect the complete set of Motown "Sounds Superb" LPs on the budget Music For Pleasure label, all of which were released in the early to mid-70s. I could have bought any of these for 99p each whilst still at secondary school, but my musical tastes weren't quite as sophisticated then ( I was buying MFP LPs at the time, but they mostly turned out to be in the "Hot Hits" series, lol)!! The best thing about the LPs was the amount of alternate unissued takes of tracks, and "LP only" tracks which featured on them, which makes their collectability even more desireable. Does anyone know what LP releases 90001 - 90003 were? And were there any Motown related releases after 90011? Gene Edited July 25, 2005 by Gene-R

Ignore me on the rest, I was talking crap - the Originals I was thinking of is on soul and the Isley's thing is not on sounds superb - just Mfp 50041.
Guest Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I got a pile of them at the flat somewhere you can have Gene, remind me sometime to dig them out for you
Pete S Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 There's a good Contours one - this is where they discovered Baby Hit And Run. What else, Stevie Wonder - Uptight, the fantastic Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself lp (not a duff track on there), a good Mary Wells one (My Guy), a Martha & The Vandellas one with One Way Out which everyone snapped up when it went big in 77...a Jimmy Ruffin one with Lonely Lonely Man AM I...shall we try and do a discography?
Paul R Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Great albums, I bet I wasn't the only person on here to rush out and get the R D Taylor one when "Ghost" was massive. I particularly liked the Stevie Wonder one, If I remember correctly it was a combination of the Uptight and Down to earth albums. All brilliant tracks Paul
Pete S Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 But that version of Ghost was totally different to the one on the single, though I think this actually started off at The Cats from the lp..

Supercorsa Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 I've got a copy of "The Fabulous Gladys Knight & The Pips" on MFP 50304. On the cover it says, Music For Pleasure Sounds Superb, is this the same series?

Guest Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Strange coincidence but just posted on another thread about Albums and mentioned the "Stranger " track (same LP as Supercosa mentions), i was told about 20 years ago this was the only version (The fellas on the other thread, told me it was on a G Knight LP)...thing is after reading this topic....is the "Stranger" on MFP an alternate take ? (I have the MFP lp and this is the only version i've heard)

Guest Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 My first post so be kind to me, especially as it is a little off topic. It's not Motown but it is a mighty fine MFP album. The album is by "The Power and The Glory" is called "The Power and the Glory Sing Twelve Rock and Gospel songs." Picked it up for a quid in a junk shop. Actually got two copies now cos I gonna give a copy to my mate. It is MFP 50051 It has got an absolutely rocking psychedelic soul version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" inn a sort of Temptations circa 1972 style which has got to be worth a quid of anyone's money. The rest of the album has got one or two nicew gospel tracks on that evoke those early roots of soul.
