Simsy Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Somebody wrote recently that all northern soul fans came from a scootering background. Somebody else quickly corrected them. In truth I think it doesn't matter where you come from or what age you are if you like the music, that should be all that matters. However, someone out there must have a pure 100% Northern Soul pedigree. Eighteen Soul Source members registered in the 50+ category which means some of them could have made it to the Wheel and everything since. If perhaps they were born within say a fifty or so mile radius of Manchester (as a central northern city), and got into rare soul maybe from an elder brother/sister or word of mouth - (but not another scene). This sort of history would perhaps be a prime pedigree for a pure northern soul fan. Maybe younger northerner's missed the Wheel & Torch and started out at Wigan. Although not around from the start this would still be quite impressive. Not taking this too seriously and disappearing up one's own jacksy! But as a thirty nine (in August) year old Southerner, all I have to be proud of is twenty two years of faith and that's about it. Some are more northern than others. Does anyone care? Is anyone proud to have a solid northern history? Does anyone know if such an individual exists? Would be interested to know.
pikeys dog Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 What about if you are a pure breed Northern Soul fan? IE if both parents went to Allnighters. "I Won The Mums"
Simsy Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 What about if you are a pure breed Northern Soul fan? IE if both parents went to Allnighters. "I Won The Mums" link Nah, wouldn't fit timewise really would it.
pikeys dog Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 How so? Listenened to all the oldies as current biggies (on live recorded tapes). Bought the Kent albums when too young to go anywhere. As soon as old enough, started going out and not stopped since.
Guest rachel Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Some are more northern than others. Does anyone care? link Not really. Always interested in hearing about venues people went to in the past but not sure you can really be 'proud' just because you happen to have been born in time to go to them! Likewise I don't think that people should be looked down on just because they've chosen to take some time out from the scene to do other things in their lives. It doesn't make someone 'better' or more of a 'proper soulie' (horrible phrase) because they've been going to soul nights for more years than someone else, because they go every weekend while others go once a month... sorry, I know you said you weren't taking it too seriously but some people do and it's an attitude that really annoys me!!
Guest Baz Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 i prefer 'chums' myself alot more meaty than pedigree

No, I understand this was just a curiosity after (and I can't recall who it was) someone said that NS fans don't necessarily come from a scootering background. Definitely not looking down on anyone - as stated at top of thread. Nothing wrong with being proud. If I met an NS fan who went to the wheel and everything since, I'd be well impressed.

Winnie :-) Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 i prefer 'chums' myself alot more meaty than pedigree link ======== Any proper soulies willing to be carbon dated? Who cares really about someone elses N/S history, it's got no relevance to how much someone enjoys the scene. Winnie:-)
