Oldest Emidisc?

I don't mean real acetates, I mean the ones we used to get made up, 2 tracks for a fiver back in the 70's. I've just found one containing

side 1 - dynatones - the fife piper

side 2 - chubby checker - cu ma la be stay

this must surely date from 1969 or 1970?

You just can't believe that either of these was ever rare but in those days I don't think there were any imports.

I also remember having one with Bill Blacks Combo - Josephine and a Capitols LP track, circa 1970

The Year Before I Started Work, I Was Still Playing Records At The Youth Club.

The Fife Piper & Cu-Ma-La-Be-Stay Were Regular Plays By The Older Lads.

Imports Were Just Starting To Appear Around This Time 1969 to 1970.

Could Well Imagine This Rare Enough At The Time Via Mainly U.K. Copies.

Soul Time Was Another Being Heavily Played & Tell Her Dean Parrish.

johnny hendley - my baby came from out of nowhere

i found one in an odd collection once with major lance aint no soul on one side and i,m sure it was humphry stomp on the other side, however worst one i had with boo on you vocal/inst, strangest one i had was labelled i like to party alpaca phase three, but played the chase is on johnny howard, this was an emi lp with about four miscuts of astral trip on it and tears the lee roye tune by jr bailey

It's not an emidisc, it's a one sided boot, is this the one they pressed at the wrong speed - it's actually Marvin Gaye.

Me and Phil used to get emi lps off Pete Lawson to sell at the Legion Spring/Summer 74.

The 1st emi i got was "Blowing my mind to pieces" b/w "Case of love" Jan 73.

For sure. I used to order 'em from Mopsy in Sheffield. I'd see him at the Mecca, tell him what tracks I wanted on each side and hey presto, they'd appear next week. That was probably circa '72 'cos the first one he did for me was Duke Browner "Crying Over You" inst and the Kaddo Strings "Nothing But Love" inst. I think he'd been at it for a few years 'cos he had the operation down to a tee.......

A couple of years later, my old deejaying partner Twink bought an Emidisc machine and he'd knock 'em out in his garage as well........

So definitely Torch era and they most likely started in the Wheel era......

Have to say no because all the Emi's of that were the original version - I sold one not long back. I did have a rare one, Mirwood Strings - Don't Pretend instrumental, but not the one that came out on a bootleg - this was the one without the lead violins which was the first version played, it's still never been released.

The first one I ever paid for was Lou Pride b/w Reggie Garner. If you ever see an old emidisc oif Lou Pride it's worth picking up because the reissue and all subsequent reissues were 10 seconds shorter than the original, so those Emi's are the only things with the long version on at a cheap price.

By the time I got on the scene, the OOTP's had been 'deleted' but I picked up loads of them over the years, must have had all of them now, not to everyones taste but a big part of the scene I'm afraid

I don't mind em basically because they were a cheap way of

The thing is with these acetates , most of the top DJ's in the 70's traded them with each other , and nobody seemed to mind, it just meant you got to hear records that you wouldn't otherwise hear if you only went to Wigan [ me ] and didn't get to hear Sam or Ginger's big Cleethorpes sides , and vice versa .This practise kept Stafford fresh for years with new sounds , the DJ's would make a certain sound big , then do a dub , sell the original and buy a fresh potential biggie .My first acetates were The Drifters " Gotta pay " / Dena Barnes and Edward Hamilton " Baby don't " / Tobi Legend off Steve Glover in B'ham market .Used to buy some off a guy in Wigan record bar including Little Anthony /Lou Pride about £6 I think .Didn't they smell great as well ? !!! That was Frank Elson..........he was on a sort of crusade against EMI,s.I was interviewed by him at Kettering one time and this was a topic of conversation although that part of the interview never got to print.

Ian Dewhurst may have something to add it was in his hey day and his memory is perhaps better than mine.Not saying Ian or John Vincent played EMI,s it was just all the shit was going on when they were regular visitors to any of Ken Cox,s venues in Lincolnshire.

The main name Frank Elson had was Keith Bradley from Ormskirk who he threatened with legal action. I also think Pete Got a mention. I've mentioned it before, but Pete used to get his emis done at a recording studio in Carnforth(I think it was called Deroy). Some of the top DJs used the same place, and the owner used to tape all the stuff the DJs had and offer Pete copies at cost.

The first emi I had, I bought in 73 and was Butch Baker Workin' At The Go Go/Promatics Sugar Pie Honey. I picked my second one up at a car boot sale in a Village just outside Portsmouth about 10 years ago, and it was The GTOs I love My Baby/Bits & Peices Keep On Runnig Away
